    Just FYI, I'm still off caffeine and feeling great. Been able to accomplish a lot since this video. Hiked 2,189 miles from Georgia to Maine on the Appalachian Trail. Rode a bicycle from Mexico to Canada. Hiked 1900 miles on the CDT. Now hiking the 2650 mile pacific Crest trail. I definitely couldn't sustain this work with being addicted to caffeine!

      i guess i should count myself as lucky, b/c all these comments about getting headaches right after they quit coffee sound terrible. i haven't had any coffee in a week and i literally feel nothing... except i'm less on-edge. that may also be b/c i usually only drank 1-2 cups a day, usually right before work, whereas a lot of these other comments say they'd drink like 4-5 cups or more, all day long. before when i'd have coffee, i'd sometimes walk around like a hornet, waiting to sting someone. now i'm much more chill, but just as productive, so theres really no down side to quitting, other than i kinda miss that momentary high i'd get when first drinking it...

  • @Cryptomunkee
    @Cryptomunkee 7 років тому +87

    Best and especially most realistic video I've watched over quitting caffeine that I've found thus far. It has motivated to keep going. I have 2 weeks since I quit and my symptoms have been HORRIBLE. I'm always tired, I have gotten depression such as contemplating life, extreme anxiety, waking up in cold sweats etc. I also suffered an extreme panic attack and bad panic attacks the first week. A lack of motivation and always lethargic. One definite upside is my quality of sleep is slowly improving. My mental clarity is slowly regaining itself, I'm much more intelligent that I gave myself credit for. It's as if caffeine would never allow me to think straight. Another weird thing is that my dreaming is improving, and I'm able to recall memories easier. Certain things I couldn't do before life focus and things of that nature. I know it will take longer considering I would drink an average of 8 to 9 cups a day. I would drink it straight black so id drink it like water. Anyways thanks for this video is keeps me going and I watch it every few days to keep me going! I know it will be a tough road but i know bit will be worth it!

    • @QuadzillaHikes

      Keep going! I found that a mix of rhodiola and tumeric in the mornings helped fight some of the worst symptoms. Worth a shot to see if it can get you through the worst patch which is the first month.
      Also I'd incorporate morning exercise as soon as you start feeling a little more energized. It's the only solution I've found that gives me the same boost/energy/positivity that I used to use coffee for in the mornings. Otherwise even off caffeine for 2 years now I still can be sluggish and feel dumb in the morning.

I'm also very sensitive to caffeine...maybe this plays a role in the effects different people experience?

    UPDATE! I just hit my 4th month of no caffeine. I’m about 80% better . White wine unexpectedly helped ( drank it 4 times at around 3.5 months. Red wine makes symptoms worse) also I took a supplement called astragalus with calmed my body and gave me energy . The first three months were extremely difficult. So difficult that I wouldn’t recommend this detox to everyone.
    I’m more calm than I have ever been in my life. I don’t have chronic muscle pain anymore. And my workouts are much better and I don’t get as sore afterwards as I once did. My head still has light pulsations from time to time. But at least I can function at work. Reading and concentration is slowly getting better.
    To anymore who is reading this you can get through this. I have added other comments on this feed in the past so you can track my journey!

      @patuskert9554 7 років тому +12

      It's been about two months without caffeine. The exhaustion is gone. My head is clear. I wake up refreshed, and have no need for coffee. I believe that heavy use of caffeine for decades, combined with a very stressful couple of years, finally took its toll, and my body just gave up. I was often barely able to get out of bed. I had aches and pains and felt 100 years old. I've read up on adrenal fatigue, and I had almost all the symptoms. I'd spend entire weekends on the couch, wondering how I used to actually go out and do things. It was like I was under a magic spell. And I would wake up an hour earlier, just so I could drink 3 cups of coffee to get going to work.
      So now I'm doing much better. The only way out of it was to stop drinking caffeine, eat good food, and sleep. I had to stop forcing myself to be active. As Jack in the video stated, it could take a few more months. I think he said about 6. He's right. I went on a big bicycle ride yesterday and had great energy. His is the more realistic assessment, so I really appreciated his video.

      Chris Gregory, it’s super hard!! It also depends how much you drank and for how long. I just had a cup of coffee today after quitting cold turkey a few months ago. The fatigue, low motivation and depressed mood got the best of me.
      I feel better after that cup today, and I feel it will help in the long run. I will now continue to drink and decrease how much I drink over the course of a couple months.
      Quitting cold turkey is hell if you were a heavy caffeine drinker for a long time (soda, coffee, tea, energy drinks etc). Take your time and do it slow.

      +Kenny Yang Hey Kenny. I've been looking forward to your new videos.
      I think it helps to look at caffeine addiction like any other stimulant addiction(cocaine/meth/etc). In those drugs you don't expect to fully recover for many weeks/months. Similarly we don't fully recover from a long caffeine addiction for weeks or months either. It really helped me to just expect to feel terrible for the first few weeks and months.
      If anyone can do it you can do it. Goodluck man!

  • @kanelic
    @kanelic 5 років тому +17

    Listen to what he said. It takes at least 3 months before you start feeling okay, and it gets better from there. This is not an easy choice, if you're looking for something easy, this is not it. But I swear to you it gets better if you are resilient. I agree with the original poster that it is worth it. I'm on month 4-5 and I'm just as energetic as I used to be before caffeine. But it's not a magic trick to fix all your problems. You have to decide for yourself if you want it or not. And if you do want it, stick to it!
    Just don't give up if you are on month 2 or 3. Give it time, this takes time. And remember that chocolate and many types of tea has caffeine in it. If you don't want to give up chocolate I get that. But I don't even feel the need for that anymore. I'm so much more stable than I've ever been.

    I’ve been trying to pinpoint what’s made me feel wholly “unusual” for the last 10 years. Unfortunately everything points back to the time I started drinking coffee/caffeine. I’ve even been diagnosed with Crohns and wonder how much my “XL coffee from UDF daily” played a role in that, considering I also started experiencing GI issues around the time I started drinking coffee. Just some anecdotal evidence, but just the week I’ve been off coffee my sleep tracker is telling me I’m breaking records left and right. I see a big big correlation with heart rate as you go to sleep and my sleep quality is through the roof when I’m not drinking coffee.

    Very true. I went though this myself. Cold turkey withdrawl was a nightmare, but the way to go, I think. Builds character. Hell ... quitting coffee was even tougher than quitting smoking was for me. That should say something.
    Sugar is another big one. I barely eat sweet processed foods anymore, and definately no "soft drinks" or energy drinks. And I only use honey in my tea. Switched to a mainly whole foods diet and glad I did. If I eat or drink anything with sugar in now, it tastes really chemical and nasty.

    Excellent video, very informative and encouraging. People don't know that it takes several months to get back to normal, not days or a few weeks. That's why in the middle of the process, they go back to caffeine. After being addicted to a drug for years, the body takes months to heal completely.

    I am 1 year and 9 months without caffeine ( coffee and tea). The first 4 months were tough for me, but nothing extreme. Exercising is very important in the process. The weirdest and most worrying withdrawal symptom was a severe insomnia after 2 months or so, which lasted for 1 week (slept about 2,5 - 3 hours per day and was not able to do it at night - never had insomnia before or after that, and I was not dealing with any issues in life). Your video was very informative and helpful for me at the time. Thanks.

    the most I've gone without caffiene is about a week since I was a a kid because I didn't have access to it. it was no fun at first but then I noticed my insomnia went away for the first time in years. I could actually fall asleep at 11:00 which often seems impossible to me. after that week though I was offered a coffee and because my tolerance dropped I got a really nice boost of artifical energy and I got addicted again even though I was planning on quitting because I was starting to sleep better and stuff. it's for sure a real addiction even though caffiene is a pretty mild drug

    One of the best caffeine-quitting videos I've seen so far. Most of them say that it's all over in a week, which is unrealistic and therefore counterproductive. At least you are giving people a more honest time frame they can expect - and the eventual reward for sticking with it.

    • @QuadzillaHikes
      @QuadzillaHikes  7 років тому +2

      Thanks! I've never understood the whole "take a week off and you'll be fine" mentality. You'd never expect to fully recover from any other multi-year long drug addiction in only a week - why expect the same from caffeine?

  • @neorich59

    Interesting listening to this and reading many of the helpful comments.👍
    I decided to give caffeine up about 2 months ago. I was only a 2 mug a day person, but I noticed that I was running to the loo all the time and getting up at night to do the same.
    That's definitely better and my sleep is amazing.
    I have this overwhelming feeling of tiredness hitting me at around 9-10 p.m. which is a signal I'm *still* ignoring as I stay up to watch UA-cam videos 😉
    But, the most interesting and revealing thing to come out of all of this for me, is how different many people's experiences are to the usual mantra of "oh it'll be all over and you'll be back to "normal" in about 5 days.
    The guy who wrote Caffeine Blues says, at least 3 weeks.
    Given some of the comments here, it seems that, for some people have experienced problems for even longer.
    However, I really think it's worth persevering with!

    Week 9 of no caffeine. I quit because it was causing dry eyes, increased eye pressure, dry skin, high blood pressure, anxiety and eventually led to total burn out. Also, I believe it was the source of weight gain. I still have a hard time reading and concentrating. I feel very slow and unmotivated which is so not like me. My digestion has also changed and I do not get hungry like I used to. My anxiety and dandruff are gone. I feel tired throughout the day and become depressed periodically. I have light dark circles around my eyes and feel pressure in my head a few times a day. I was a heavy caffeine user about 800-1000mg a day. Going through this detox as a student is a nightmare, but I am determined to get through it. DO NOT DRINK ENERGY DRINKS. I will update more as a few weeks go by.

      How are you going, Reign? I'm 4 months in and though things seemed to be improving around 2 month mark, I slipped on my usual low carb diet and everything crashed. Now, even though I'm on a good diet again, any benefits I was noting from no caffeine has completely gone (even though not once have I cheated with caffeine). In fact, I am experiencing some distressing symptoms--hot and cold body temperature, insomnia, anxiety, depression, no motivation or interest in life, no energy and very negative mood. Just hope this goes away....why has all this hit at 4 months? Very weird.

    • @reboundingfromnarcissistic5386
      @reboundingfromnarcissistic5386 4 роки тому +1

      Bex L I remember those symptoms , hang in there. I did the detox for seven months. I stopped at the top of the year for a job interview so I wouldn’t appear tired.
      I learned two things from doing this. My side effects before doing the no caffeine were actually coming from work. Because the abuse was entirely covert , I had no clue it was going on until I took 3 months off and came back. Please study covert NPD on UA-cam for more information.
      Secondly, my liver was extremely overloaded with toxins . Now that you are detoxing it’s time to help your body clean itself. Try pectasol-C , this does a great job at cleaning the body. Also, do coffee enemas they are going to help the liver release toxins. I am currently doing them and feel so much better. Feeling negative is apart of the detox symptoms . Try sitting out in the sun and drinking plenty of water. I had mild - mid level depression which I knew was from the detox.
      Along with the abuse I was dealing with at work , I was extremely heavy metal toxic. Heavy metals tax the body greatly and impair it from doing its job correctly. In addition,I had a lot of childhood trauma to heal from which is supposedly stored in the liver.
      I started to feel my brain chemistry change at 6 month of no caffeine . I believe month 3-4 was the hardest for me of no caffeine then it got better. However, like I said I went back to my abusive work environment which was the real issue until I quit for good.
      As far as caffeine. I only drink green tea now. When I felt my worse during the detox with extreme depression and fatigue . I remember pomegranate juice, walnuts and White wine did wonders.
      The 7 month detox did help me though. I no longer have dry eyes, and my anxiety lowered. I lost weight during my first break from work. Then I gained it back plus more when I went back to work. The irony was I was training for a marathon when I went back to work and was still gaining weight. This is what made me question if my issue was caffeine and it also exposed my covert narcissist boss. Participating in the marathon really made him mad that he cut my pay and tried to make me believe I was a bad employee.
      Hopefully this helps. I’m glad to answer any questions.

    • @reboundingfromnarcissistic5386
      @reboundingfromnarcissistic5386 4 роки тому +1

      I just reread this doing coffee enema may seem counter productive. But you don’t get the same effect as drinking coffee. You fatigue and depression are linked to a backup’ed liver and chemical changes in your body

      Hi Reign, just typed a reply and lost it with one button. Just thank you for the response above. Very sorry you've had such a lot in your life to contend with, but I can see you are able to see things for what they are and recognise toxic people (Narcissistic), and the mental/emotional effects it can have on those victim to it. Have had relatives suffer something similar. You're not alone! Some people don't realise what is happening to them, so very glad you're not blind to it and have taken some action.
      Like you, i've been metal toxic most of my life and it's wiped out my youth, as I spent most of it attempting to later detox from it all. Just a nightmare. Too long to go on about here.
      all in all, my health is now chronic after other things happened. At this time, I'm battling more toxic exposure. My brother's rental home, for some reason, has become highly toxic. It's both inside and outside their house. Nobody knows what it is, but I know it's got metal toxins involved, due to my symptoms. It's been suggested the house may have, at one stage, been used as a meth lab or it could be coming from a neighbouring property. It's impacted me severely and I can no longer be in contact with them, even if we meet up somewhere away from the home, as I get severely poisoned. It's devastated me both in health and emotionally at not being able to be around my niece/nephews, unless I want to get toxic again (which takes a month or more to feel better again).
      So the caffeine thing was one of my desperate attempts at lightening the load on my system and seeing if I could improve. Seeing your reply has kind of boosted me into trying to keep going and seeing what happens after 6 months....So thanks for reassuring me with that. I assume it's normal to have things relapse like this?
      Thanks also for your health suggestions. I may try them in the future, but right now, I am being very careful as it takes little to nothing to knock me and things go crazy again, even if it's "health" stuff, which may benefit others, but can do something to me that isn't quite so great. I'm seeing if I improve again and then I may get brave and start trying other things cautiously.
      Cheers to you! Keep up your good work and what you have been able to do despite what you've been through.

      Bex L thanks so much ! I wish you the best as well. I had to throw the my mental and emotional health in there because it’s all connected.
      Give yourself about two weeks . Things will get better. During month 5 you will start to feel slight bursts of energy. And yes during the detox my systems went up and down until mid month 4. Around six months I could felt light tingling sensations throughout my brain my entire shift at work. When I drove to the store that night my vision was crystal clear as it had been about 5 years prior.
      I also stopped drinking wine as I had one bottle a week. I believe there are toxins in cheap wine . I can’t prove it but about the time I started drinking wine religiously . I started to have weight problems .
      Blessings to you and remember a lot of our symptoms can be emotional especially it they are chronic issues we have been battling for years .
      Another important notes was I was vaccinated back 2017 , I didn’t make the link until recently but my dry eyes, vision and anxiety started after that. It was so bad I was scared to drive on the freeway. This on top of narcissist abuse made my symptoms sky rocket .
      Just be patient, our bodies are amazing and you will get through this!!!!
      *****Also you have to take astragalus by solaray it is a MUST!!!!****

    My story. Till I was 16 I have never drunk any coffee at all. With the first cup in my life I've felt super euphoric and energized. I would drink it before every training and to get going in the morning. After about 2/3 years of daily use I got gut issues and severe pain in the chest. Then I've switched to Yerba Mate which was an absolute game-changer. Better digestion, better skin and no "coffee breath." But in time it caused me anxiety and also worked bad on my stomach. I then, made my first caffeine detox in my life. I enjured 2 months and felt extremely exhausted during that time. The biggest issue was that I could't resist my appetite at all. Now I try to simply make intervals from time to time just when I feel that my body gets addapted.

    I’m on day 12 & been watching this a couple times, a great Motivational Boost..!
    I was a Heavy Caffeine user almost 20yrs. Caffeine equivalent about 5-7 espressos//day.
    It’s ruining//ruling me, I can sure feel that, getting older. I don’t know how one excepts to keep this up reaching into their 40s//50s//60s.. Probably because I hit it really hard at such a early age. Even with all these energy drinks, I mostly just love to drink black espresso coffee. All the acidic levels it gives.. my body must hate.. lol
    I been quitting in the winter months over the last 4years. Longest I went was little over 4months. I’m beginning to know I don’t need this “very” addicting drug. It’s literally rewiring my brain//my stomach.. basically the whole body.
    I’ve always quit cold turkey. So, for me I slept the first 2 days, 18-20hrs. 4th day I’m already feeling better. Course I do feel out of whack still.. but slowly it gets better. My energy levels feel a bit increased after 6days but still emotionally sort of still drained & foggy. I want that 6month sobriety!!
    I’m scared to work a double next week. I don’t know how I’ll stay awake. I guess don’t schedule yourself long shifts.
    Best.. Regards,

    At the point where he stops and hears the squirrel, this could turn into a great found-footage horror like Blair Witch. For added irony, make it a caffeine-crazed squirrel that got jacked up on coffee grounds and half-finished discarded starbucks drinks or cans of monster. Could be a great niche corner of youtube :) Perhaps a rick-roll for good measure! P.s. if anyone actually does this I want to appear in the credits ;)

    I quit smoking, and soon after caffeine aswell. I definately felt braindead for like 3 months xD. but for caffeine, i would really recommend you switch to green tea in like maybe 2nd week, you can try lots of different flavored teas, and if needed, add a hint of honey, since atleast for me, tea does not taste much, its more..taste-smell xD Green tea has caffeine, but it has also things that make the caffeine not hit like a truck like with coffee, dont remember what it was called, but whatever it was, in combination with caffeine, it gives a smooth, long lasting energyboost, unlike coffee that gives a massive spike and then a crash. Also, when using grean/black tea, it helped me to transition into non-caffeinated herbal teas after i stopped caffeine completely (i recommend Rooibos, something with Hibiskus+licorice root (just dont overdo it with licorice root, in great amounts it raises blood pressure or something, one cup of that a day seems fine, the other 1-2 cups is Rooibos+honey for me atm)). And another thing, heave caffeine users, look into Adrenal Fatigue, if interested :)

    The things described in your experiences with caffeine problems (sleeping but not feeling rested, etc) match mine exactly, Im only a week off but hopefully will reach where youre at as well. I've quit everything else so going through this process is not new to me, and caffeine has so far been the easiest but it still sucks (for the reasons you list). I really want to feel that natural state, sustainable energy levels. I get a lot done on stimulants but the output turns into junk after some time. Fitness, model building, reading and games are how I distract myself because I am too blah to get work done. Thankfully I can spare two months of being useless, because tapering does not work well for me (I did tapering with nicotine and it just prolonged the suffering).
    Anyway that sort of turned into a ramble but this video was just the encouragement I needed. Here's to hoping I can come back in 3-6 months with a success story.

    Thanks for this video. I watched it many times over the years. I appreciate that you mentioned the weird high that you get from caffeine. I was drinking energy drinks so I had the spike of the caffeine and sugar. But for about an hour each morning, I would make really stupid decisions like I was drunk I would make plans and then literally an hour later I would want nothing to do with it like I was a different person. So much like a drunk. It’s a powerful drug as Rick James would say it’s a hell of a drug. Thanks man.

    You did it correctly, stopping it all at once, nobody quits smoking by reducing to a few a day or alcohol by switching from whiskey to beer. Then you would get tempted and reminded several times a day. Stop it completely from one day to the next and don't start again, that's like my friend stopped smoking.

    2:19 excited about random stuff. That happens to me while consuming an energy drink. It's The excitement is short lived but great while it lasts. But overall the side effects aren't worth it. Caffeine is tough to quit. I only drink one energy drink a day (no coffee I like my white teeth) but the amount isn't what concerns me. It's the fact that I crave it at all, before consuming them, I never did. The amount of money that it has costed me is probably well into the hundreds over the past year and a half. I mean, it was fun, everyone has the right to have fun and feel good. That's what life is about. I mean, it's caffeine, not heroin or cocaine. But at some point we even need to move on from caffeine because even like he said in video, it begins to consume your thoughts, dominate your decisions, and make us far less productive. I know it it's true for me.

    Ok, I’m done with coffee- cold turkey; it’ll be 6months next week.
    Question, lately I’m wondering about chocolate. Like, I enjoy dark chocolate occasionally and have read theirs an average; 10mg’s of caffeine in 1oz bar of dark chocolate.
    An average cup of coffee contains 80-120mg’s of caffeine.
    ((I used to drink 4-5 cups a day))
    Recently I’ve been eating dark chocolate for a snack and the health benefits I suppose It has and realized it has caffeine. I don’t feel any caffeine effects.
    Would anyone say 1oz of dark chocolate a day even affect a person to become addicted & dependent to the caffeine in it?!?
    Regards,
