How did the "killdozer" not make this list? If you ever do a part two to this list, it is a crazy story even by today's standard and an example of spite taken to the extreme. Another good one is the middle finger statue in Westford Vermont.
I never knew that the origin of the phrase “to cut off your nose to spite your face” were so badass. I wouldn’t call what the nuns did “spiteful” but rather the sole venue of defending their values and an awesome action of empowerment in the face of despair. They couldn’t run. They couldn’t kill themselves (suicide not allowed in catholic religion). They couldn’t physically fight. And they couldn’t passively allow themselves to become “sullied” as brides of their god. So this is all they could do.
With the Philly A's story about the bleachers, it still happens. To this day at Wrigley Field, there still are people who watch baseball games from building across the street. The owners of those buildings placed bleachers on top of the building snd sold tickets. The Cubs then threatened to sue to the roof top bleacher owner. So the bleachers owners started to pay the Cubs a fee. Years later, the new owner wanted to put up 2 large video score boards. The bleacher owners threw up issues since they didn't know which properties would have their views blocked. So then the Cubs bought all of the rooftop bleacher properties.
True story, I quit smoking out of spite. Long story short is I got in an argument with someone and they hid my brand new pack of cigarettes to get back at me. I decided to quit smoking to turn it into a favor to me, and almost a decade later I haven't touched one since.
My grandfather quit smoking out of spite. Someone told him that he wouldn't be able to quit cold turkey, and to prove them wrong he never touched a cigarette for the rest of his life.
In response to #4, the Doves font situation - when Cobden-Sanderson didn't want his typeface used for inferior products, he meant advertising. The Doves Press traditionally printed things like bible editions, collections of literature, etc. and Cobden-Sanderson thought his typeface was too beautiful to be used to print ads. (And, as someone who also loves typography and dislikes advertising, I'd have to agree.) There's an article about this titled "How The World’s Most Beautiful Typeface Was Nearly Lost Forever" by Hayley Campbell if you want more details.
I guess you can say Jerry Lewis MDA got $20 from me out of spite. When I was 17 I applied for a job at a supermarket. I was about to start college. I was a frequent customer there and several employees and managers knew me. The manager said he’s sure I’m great but he wanted someone with more time available so he wasn’t going to give me the job. Fast forward 4 years later when I graduated. The store was fundraising for Jerry Lewis MDA. The manager promised to wear a dress if $90,000 was raised. I saw the manager walking by and pulled out $20. Saying this is for not giving me the job 4 years ago and donated it. The manager ended up wearing a dress.
This reminds me of the time my mom's neighbor got really upset because we would often throw our scraps out into the backyard for the local wildlife to eat. He came to us complaining that his dog, whom ran around freely in the neighborhood, kept getting diarrhea from eating our scraps, so we shouldn't throw them outside anymore. A ridiculous request, so after we threatened to call the pound instead, he erected a giant privacy fence around his yard. Needless to say, we never saw either of them ever again
Here in Alexandria, Virginia, you can see the narrowest house in America -- 25 feet deep and seven feet wide. It was built in 1830 by the man who owned the two adjacent houses. He got fed up with people driving horse-drawn carts and wagons between his two other houses, so he solved his problem by building his spite house. It's privately owned today by folks who do live in it part of the year. I've always wondered if they get fed up themselves with tourists strolling by and stopping to take selfies.
In the town where I live there's an oddly shaped lot a mere 0.13 acres in size that someone squeezed a small house into. The house fronts a thru-street and is surrounded by a modern residential neighborhood on the other four sides (from the road it looks triangular but the property appraiser's site shows it as a trapezoid. Apparently, the area was platted in the 1950s for a trailer park. By 1981, the developer had bought up Lots 2-68 lots, abandoned the existing plat, and drew up a new subdivision. I can only imagine what stubbornness by the the property owner and/or developer prevented the property from being acquired for the subdivision. I suppose the owner of Lot 1 really, really did not want to move. (The house wasn't built on the lot until 2001.)

8:56 my 9th great grandfather was one of the first white people to set foot in Mystic. He was with the English militia who sided with Uncas at the Battle of Mystic Fort. They founded Norwich Connecticut. Mytick is one of the oldest settlements that saw white people in New England. Mytick River is ancient. It's Mohegan holy land.
Not a well known act of spite, but a funny one really. After my grandfather on my mom’s side died, my mom’s one sister and the son of another sister engaged in emptying the estate while delaying probate. I will save the rest of this part of the incident for another time, but I was in the post office when I spotted my cousin in question carrying a sizable box. I did not talk to him, but a few days later, that same box arrived at our house (I dwelled with my parents). Inside were the remains of photographs where these two (and presumably my cousin’s then wife) sat down and cut our family out of family photos with my grandparents and sent us those parts. I think it was meant to be spiteful. I found it hilarious they went through all that trying yo be spiteful and just proved how insanely petty they were. My act of spite back however was much less work and much more effective. After this cousin fell out with my aunt, he saw me in a store and greeted me warmly. I glared at him and he looked shocked and said “it’s me!” I replied in the most evil voice I could muster “I know who you are.” As I left the parking lot, I could see him sitting in his car with the door open and trying to process what just occurred.
I am a zookeeper in chicago and I regularly feed the hippos day old sausages so they have a taste of their home. I put strings on the sausages and swing them around the hippos they get so mad at me and scream but it's an obsession sometimes the hippos try and break out of their cages but I keep swinging those hotdogs in wide circles over their heads. Luckily my boss doesn't know I do this or my coworkers
