What microphone would you recommend for the Canon R ?
Preferably one with a light weight, since I make videos of outdoors events with the camera hand-held and no tripod. This is not to record interviews or vlogging. I may be up to 16 feet away from the sound source while filming.

There isn't just one ideal mic, there are various things to consider, your budget being one of them. Ideally you would have a mic on your subjects (wired or wireless) or use a boom mic (but I'm guessing you're a solo shooter, so you won't have someone to handle the boom mic). At 16 ft from the subject, especially outdoors, you will not able able to pick up the best quality sound from individual subjects if using a camera mounted microphone, however, I have used a Deity V-Mic D3 Pro on my Canon R and R6 cameras when filming events and it has captured good location sound (you could also use the the equivalent Rode VidMic Pro+). The Deity mic plugs directly into the mic input on the Canon R and it also comes with a shock mount that fits on the camera's hot shoe. I hope that helps.
