Is the HONOR Magic V2 the BEST Foldable Phone in 2024? (Full Review)

- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- Unboxing the Honor Magic V2 and using it for four weeks has been an impressive experience. This foldable phone stands out with its thin and light design, making it comfortable to hold and use. It boasts excellent displays with minimal crease and powerful performance. However, the software is a weak spot, lacking the polish of competitors. The camera is good but inconsistent, excelling in bright conditions but struggling in low light.
Here's a quick breakdown:
Design & Build (9/10): Exceptionally thin and light, feels premium, lacks IP rating.
Displays (9/10): Excellent LTPO OLED screens, minimal crease on main display.
Performance (8/10): Powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, smooth performance, not the latest processor.
Software (6/10): Room for improvement, lacks features and polish compared to competitors.
Camera (6/10): Good in bright light, inconsistent results in other conditions.
Battery Life (9/10): Excellent battery life, lasts a full day, fast wired charging, no wireless charging.
Connectivity & Features (8/10): Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, Magic Desktop feature for productivity.
Price & Availability (6/10): High retail price of €2,000, discounts available in some regions, not available in the US.
Overall: The Honor Magic V2 is a unique and innovative foldable with a flawless design and great displays. However, the software and camera hold it back from being a perfect choice. If you can find it at a discounted price, it's a worthy consideration for tech enthusiasts who prioritize a thin and light foldable experience.
Verdict: Despite its shortcomings, the Honor Magic V2 offers a special user experience that makes it worth considering for tech enthusiasts, especially at a discounted price.

Great review. Enjoying mine. Software could be better but hoping magic OS improves some things
Thank you! I hope so, too 😉
I 100% agree with your assessment of this phone. I have owned this phone since it's first week of launch here in the UK and I am delighted with it. Yes the software could be better but it's by no means a deal breaker. I like you am still amazed by the thinness of the device. Would I recommend this device to others, 100% yes!!
Nice to hear! Enjoy the Magic V2. Just using it to write the reply 😉
still good after 2 months?
@@EXAKTHD1337 Yes! And even better now with the Magic OS 8 and Android 14 update.
Nice introduction. I look forward to your next video and opinion. Just subscribed 👍🏻
Nice! Thank you and welcome aboard 😆
Thanks for this review.
Can you compare the Oneplus Open & Honor Magic V2 ?
I'm indeed planning to make a comparison! However, I can't promise it will be released immediately. My spare time is quite limited at the moment.
Forgive me if you already mentioned this in a prior video but are there any notification issues with the global Honor Magic V2? I read on reddit that there's some issues with WhatApp and other app notifications (like emails) disappearing on honor launcher software, not sure if that's related to the chinese version or on the Global verison as well. If there are any notification issues on the Magic V2, does installing different launchers like the Niagara launcher help fix this issue?
Also are there any sticker functions on the Honor Photo app like the Samsung Gallery? For example on my samsung fold 3, I can draw around a subject in a photo to remove the background and save it as a custom sticker in my sticker folder within the same gallery app, is there anything similar for the Honor as well? I noticed the Honor photo app does have a sticker function in it's native photo app but does it allow you to add custom stickers into it? Many thanks!
About notifications, the only snag I hit was after getting all my apps set up, I noticed some of them weren’t showing notifications. If I catch that happening, I just dive into the settings and fix it up, making sure to turn on those notification bubbles too.
As for the native gallery app, it's kinda basic when it comes to making stickers. You can throw some premade stickers on your photos or add things like time and location in edit mode, but that’s about it. It’s pretty bare-bones compared to other gallery apps out there.
Great review !
Glad you enjoyed it 😉
Does the phone in the folded state seal out dust from entering the inner screen? I find the Z Folds always have dust on the inner screen when opening it from being in a pocket. Since it's not sealed when closed, dust is free to float in between the folded halves.
Great question! I always have fine pocket lint on the outside of the device, but almost none of it gets inside. Around the inner display, there's a rim that does a good job of protecting the inner screen from dust.
Has the software been updated any changes I know we have wait os8 to come out the device.
There were some updates but without notable changes. Most likely under the hood improvements.
I have just purchased the phone should arrive tomorrow. I just want to know does the phone support stylus.
It does! It supports the Magic Pencil from Honor. I have no idea if other styluses work, too.
Does the global version support stylus if I buy it separately?
I suspect that the global version also supports a stylus, but I haven't personally tried it yet.
I just noticed that my power button is a little bit loose. is that normal?
I mean that there is movement and if you run your finger over it, it moves a little bit loose.
do you have that too?
Yes! And most other phones have that, too. Completely normal 👍🏼
@@JMTMarc Where can i sent you a short video so i can show you what i mean
Im considering getting one next week. How is the current software issue?.
It's now about £1250 in the UK.
The software is fine. Not the best foldable software for sure, but no deal breaker.
I ordered a red magic 9 pro instead.
Cool! Enjoy 👍🏻
Would you pick this or OnePlus open.
The OnePlus Open is the better phone, mainly due to better software and camera, but I like the Magic V2 more.
Good review. I actually find the camera very good. Just had the latest firmware upgrade launched yesterday. Can't see any difference in performance.
Also learnt that Honor in their wisdom, have stated that they will not be introducing any update to Android 14 & their own UI until probably July this year. Whilst I honestly do not see any real advantage 14 has over 13, I would have much preferred the current crop of software failings to be addressed. Such a real shame as the hardware of the phone is so good.
I installed the update an hour ago and am eager to discover the enhancements. I've also learned that MagicOS won't be released until late summer. My anticipation stems not from Android 14, but from the UI updates, such as the ability to configure the Swipe down gesture.
Thank you for your reply, you put a lot of effort into your presentations, that's why I have subscribed.
After swapping my sims back from my trusty Fold V and copying over call logs, photos, texts etc and then updating, I was hoping they at least fixed intermittent connectivity with Android Auto. They didn't - A BIG FAIL.
Having THREE separate vehicles with Car Play/Android Auto screen ALL of them disconnected at random usually when running WAZE but same problem with Tom-Tom etc. I also find the resizing of apps on the center screen unacceptable and even extends to the front screen, chopping peoples heads off when the same post is perfectly centred on my Samsung Note 20 Ultra or Fold V.
If they think users will wait until July for fixes they are mistaken. No wonder there are so many for sale at under £1000GBP on EBay. Real shame as it has potential. Maybe I should have kept the OnePlus Open - that had similar issues with random drop-outs using Android Auto too, but the user interface, whilst not perfect, was far better.
You can see why Samsung sell so well - they are so far ahead of the game. The same will happen with cheap (albeit these foldables are anything but cheap) EV cars from China. They will be a disaster. @@JMTMarc
I initially purchased this but since changed it for a oneplus open i can honestly say the oneplus blows it away
Gutes Review - einzig die Tastatur könnte mal wieder ein wenig entstaubt werden ;)
😂 Die zieht Staub an wie nichts anderes 😫
I am having offer 115 euro is that good price should I purchase
1,115.60 Euro
Fantastic price! I would to for it. I paid 1.600 😭
Overall I agree with your review and I really appreciate your videos. However, it's worth mentioning that while Honor chose not to certify the device with an official IP rating, I think most foldables have an "x" for dust resistance in their ip rating, meaning none. Also Honor claims that while there's no official IP rating, it does have "P2i nano-coating applied to all internal components, offering protection against accidental water splashes". It's hard to say just how much protection that is, but the ipx4 on the One Plus Open for example is described as "protection against splashing water". So V2 owners definitely need to baby their phone more than a regular phone, but perhaps not more than other foldables.
Also regarding hardware, a few thoughts: when calculating price to performance ratio, taking into consideration how much storage, ram, battery, and which processor you get is important. The fact that this phone frequently has discounts or trade in deals that make is cost much less than other comparable foldable phones but has 16gb of ram (this is a HUGE amount for a phone), 512gb of storage (also huge), snapdragon 8 gen2 (not the absolute most recent, sure, but it's not about how new the processor is, but how well it performs and this is very powerful and very efficient), and a 5000mah battery (huge). So all the specs are huge, for a price that's lower than the competitors, in hardware that's thinner and lighter, in a time when many companies such as Apple charge huge premiums just for ram or storage. Add on to that the 120hz 4k screens both inside and out. The price to performance is amazing.
Thanks for your comment and for shedding more light on the IP rating discussion! I appreciate you putting it into context. I'm with you on your assessment.
As for the price to performance ratio, I did mention that at full retail price, I find it a bit lacking. However, if you can manage to grab a discount, the value significantly improves!
Like more content about v2 please.
Thank you! Anything in particular you would be interested in?
i read online that according to honor engineer the v2 is splash resistrant
That's possible, however it has no official IP rating. But I think that It should be able to handle some splashes.
Price is propably going down. Lowest price in finland for magic V2 512g storage has been 999€. For that price it is quite unbeateble.
Indeed! This price is fantastic. I anticipate a decrease in the price as well. This might be a strategy to maintain a high retail price while regularly providing special coupons to enhance its appeal.
Like the vid :-)
Thank you 👍
I would be happier with the phone if it has wireless charging :)
Yes, I agree! Wireless charging would ne nice 🙂
I've used this for a week. love that hardware but the camera on it is utter shit.
Unfortunately yes! Just not enough room for a proper camera, I suppose.
No One Plus OPEN
Sorry?
@@JMTMarc One Plus OPEN is the much better foldable phone.
