"La javanaise", more commonly called "la java", is a popular French dance born at the beginning of the 20th century. It is quite particular because the man places his hands on a particular place on the woman's body😊. This dance was only performed in popular balls and in cafes... we understand why. This dance also gave rise to the particular term "faire la java" (partying, dancing and drinking alcohol), quite well illustrated in Michel Sardou's song "La java de Broadway".
Serge Gainsbourg was a monument ... a - controversial - genius but who self-destroyed himself with cigarettes and alcohol. He died in Paris in 1991, aged 62. A shame! But in the later part of his career, he'd build that character of himself, appearing neglected and drunk most of the time ... his long-lasting provocation. He also composed (yes, he was a great music composer too) many films music. You should definitely listen to this masterpiece "Requiem pour un con"! You'll love it, no doubt.
I had never seen this version before. i knew the song of course, but i got goosebumps just listening to that. love from his fans and just look at his eyes at the end ... RIP Serge
He died in '91 at age 62, ravaged by alcohol and cigarettes. He was in this state the last years of his life, never sober, provoking people, continuing to give concerts despite being drunk, like a slow self-destruction. I didn't like this period of his life, nor the songs he made at that time. But his songs when he was younger, magnificent! He was the first in France to bring African sounds into his music, to rap etc... a great innovator.
This classic track from '63 (back when he could still really sing) is so iconic that everyone knows the lyrics by heart - no need to perform it note for note
Unfortunately you are right he was a very heavy smoker and alcohol did not help him either. He had several heart attacks and the last one was fatal. But despite all that he was a poet and an incredible author and musician. In France he was called "l'homme à tête de choux" because of his big ears also the name of one of his albums in 1976.
The "Javanaise" is an Indonesian dance, but it was not at all in Gainsbourg's culture, it is for a completely different reason : the play with the sound of words. The explanation is a little complicated 😏. In France there is a form of slang called "javanais", it is about repeating each syllable but replacing the consonant with the letter V. In short, we hear lots of V. The trick in these lyrics is that the text is not in javanais, it is in good French, but almost all the words contain V. It therefore gives the ear an impression of javanais when in fact it is not ! Gainsbourg was very literary and liked to play with words 🙂
Gainsbourg was a great songwriter, he has written many great songs, like "Bonnie & Clyde" (it has been sampled in several songs, and for the lyrics, he used some poetry written by Bonnie Parker), "Je T'Aime, Moi Non Plus", etc. Here, the crowd sings better than he does, lol. Check out the studio versions, or the video of "Bonnie & Clyde" with Brigitte Bardot... He has made great albums in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, "Love On The Beat" is excellent, and he has played with many great musicians. Written songs for many other artists, too. Here's a link to the "Bonnie & Clyde" video, I'm sure you'll like it: ua-cam.com/video/Wa7wjr1NwhA/v-deo.htmlsi=D1YCElggUiFNHS-_
His live versions are more for the people who already knows him, you should check the studio versions fur the futur Gainsbourg's songs. A la prochaine :)
I think it's always better to check the studio version of songs, unless the live version is explicitely renowned for its superiority (almost never). not only for Gainsbourg but also for other artists, as the live version is usually not on par with the studio version.
You may be able to listen to the studio versions of his youth; he sings more. These concert versions from the end of his life are pathetic." Listen to "I love you, I don't love you anymore", "Bonny and Clyde", the album "L'homme à la tête de chou" in its entirety and yes, the original Javanaise version, or "Nazi Rock," "l'ami caouette", "Requiem pour un con" and you will have an idea perhaps of the reason for France's passion for this man. I knew two people who knew him off stage and both told me that he was very endearing in private. Don't be too hard on this old alcoholic, he hides deep wounds.
Serge Gainsbourg died at 62 years old. It's very difficult to explain this artist with few words. But you are right he was very controversial.
SERGE GAINSBOURG FOREVER !

Monsieur Gainsbourg était contre les drogues ! Ecoutez Aux Enfants De La Chance

You know the song, it's a french classic known around the world.

He was destroying his health like a long suicide, because he was depressed and fragile, since his youth.
👏👏👏
