Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991) is one of the most influent musician/artist/singer/writer (and actor/director), during the 60's, 70's and 80's. Unfortunately fell into alcoholism in the 80's. Very famous in Europe and Great Britain ; songwriter for himself, and for Brigitte Bardot, France Gall (before she married Michel Berger ; "Les Sucettes à l'anis" for example), Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy ("Comment te dire adieu"), Vanessa Paradis (Johnny Depp ex wife), Juliette Gréco, Étienne Daho, Catherine Deneuve (the famous french actress), Dalida, etc.
@@asaperchman8682 On the contrary, Gainsbourg never touched drugs and was hostile to them . He was a heavy smoker and his proven alcoholism continued to increase until the end. However, in the excerpt concerning Whitney Houston, the presenter Drucker will confirm that Gainsbourg was not at all drunk contrary to what Whitney Houston believed. He was simply in his usual provocative style (e.g., he had already burned a 500 franc bill live on TV to protest against the tax burden );He was a tormented being who wanted to be a painter and lived his success as an author-songwriter-performer who brought him wealth and comfort like a curse .A great musical virtuosity of family (his father was a violinist and he himself had started as a pianist in the bars) allows him to meet musical successes in extremely varied styles. His first success in 1958 the puncher of the Lilas class him as an intellectual songwriter of the vivier of Saint Germain des Près and he composes for Juliette Gréco the muse of this milieu several successes like "La Javanaise".He then triumphs with "La chanson de Prévert" a song on the song "Les Feuilles mortes" Autumn Leaves by Jacques Prévert. But wealth and fame will arrive in the middle of the years with songs composed for young idols girls of the French song France Gall and Françoise Hardy . He writes and composes for France Gall "Poupée de cire, poupée de son" who wins the prize of the great European contest of Eurovision where each western European country competed with a song.He will also write and compose for France Gall "Attends ou vas t-en" "Les sucettes" (already provocative he has a double-sided song performed by the innocent France Gall aged 17 who sings without understanding the meaning of the words that can represent a girl sucking a lollipop or doing fellation). For françoise Hardy, he adapts in French an English song that will become "How to say goodbye" which will be a world success but also the very poetic "l'Anamour; He also composes for Marianne Faithfull with whom he has an affair."Lover of Brigitte Bardot, he wrote and composed several hit songs like "Comic Strip" "Harley Davidson" and recorded with her a sultry duo "je t"aime moi non plus " in 1967. But Brigitte Bardot, married to the German billionaire Gunther Sachs, is threatened by the latter who does not want his misfortune to be exposed in the open by a Gainsbourg duo./Bardot asks Gainsbourg not to release the record, which the latter gentleman accepts. Having broken up with Bardot, he tells in his song Initials B;B, he meets a young English actress Jane Birkin divorced from the English composer John Barry, with whom he re-recorded in 1969 the song "I don’t love me either" The song will be censored in many countries after its condemnation by the Vatican as an apologia of sodomy and is sold under the cloak, ensuring Gainsbourg’s worldwide fame . The song is even ranked at the top of the UK hit parade but banned from broadcast before 10 pm. The 1970s marks his artistic consecration with many bold albums, avant-gardist in music and now considered as cults and rediscovered in recent years by the British scene that makes him an iconic singer (The ballad of Melody Nelson, The Man with the Head of Cabbages, Nazi Rock). His excesses almost won in 1973 when he had a heart attack which contributed to the success of his beautiful foreboding song "I came to tell you that I’m leaving."he composed songs for his girlfriend Jane Birkin in the 70s, music from successful films in France like les Bronzés, and around the world (Emmanuelle ) and directed a film he composed songs for his girlfriend Jane Birkin in the 70s, music from films that were successful in France like les Bronzés, and around the world (Emmanuelle ) and directed a film that revisits his past as an actor, where he had played the bad boys in films in the 1960s and the role of villains in Italian peplums films. He triumphed in 1979 with a reggae version of the French national anthem La Marseillaise, "Aux armes etc...This reggae version of the Marseillaise causes scandal but Gainsbourg very cultured man ( He had adapted musically the poems of Victor Hugo, Mallarmé or Baudelaire (as the excellent Serpent who dances on an air of bossa nova ) that the author of the Marseillaise , Claude Rouget de Lisle has written on the original parchment of 1792 he buys, the mention "Aux armes etc... " to avoid repeating each time "Aux armes citoyens" silencing its critics, because thus his version of the Marseillaise is the most faithful to the original text.In doing so, Withney Houston was wrong to focus on the fact that Gainsbourg had told her he would fuck her, because the wives of Gainsbourg and his multiple female conquests are unanimous to describe him as an exceptional lover and it is not for nothing that he had superb women as mistresses like Brigitte Bardot until the Italian actress Marilu Tolo passing by Marianne Faihfull . Withney Houston missed the opportunity to have a good time with Gainsbourg.
"Is he drunk???", welcome to the world of Serge Gainsbourg mate xDDDD !! Seriously though : he made legendary music, but he was always drinking and smoking a lot, to flee the pain of existence. He was super cash and vulgar but he also was a very kind, pure and raw soul at the same time (funnily enough) : a very complicated character, in other words. I strongly recommend you to listen to some of the music he made, you'll be surprised.
For those who don't know himm :It's not even the weirdest thing he did on TV..... He's been much more insulting with french singer Catherine Ringer, and he's also famous for burning money live on TV...... :D
Since Whitney Houston died because of drugs I recommend you listen to Serge Gainsbourg's song "Aux enfants de la chance" which is a song against drugs. Every time I listen to it I'm crying. This song is beautiful.

Gainsbourg was drunk all the time, and obsessed by young women, and he had a "weird" way to express his admiration to them. Often, he f.cked them, and then wrote songs for them.
He was a legend, man! I know, and would understand, that, knowing him through that clash, you will hardly believe me. But he truly was ... One of the greatest french singer/musician/composer/artist between the 1950s and 1980s of all times. He was talented and once, a journalist asked him why he prefered to compose for the "French New Wave singers" instead of keeping singing himself. "I do a record. My own record. 10 songs. Only 1 or 2 will become hits through the radio. Now I compose 10 songs for 10 singers. 10 records. 10 hits." But once drunk (and he was for his last decade), Serge Gainsbourg became "Gainsbarre" and unfortunately, that day, he acted stupidly. Obviously, everybody in the audience was shocked by that sentence. And Gainsbourg knew that, even him was shocked a few hours later, understanding what he had said. He will try to excuse himself.
Whitney refused to come back in France for years after that night. Of course, what He did was inexcusable but He never did something like that again So try to not judge him too harshly (on this unique inappropriate act) because He’s also a genius artist and his music is worthwhile
I remember Michel Drucker (who present this show) in his one man show, about his long career on the french TV, have said "After the show, i go to the Whitney's lodge to apologize. Everyone saids "She's gone and she was hungry". I go with flowers to George V's hotel, janitor said me "I don't recommend it", I insiste, he said me "Secund floor". At the secund floor, a maid said me "Hooo!!". In front of her door, I knock, room-service open and said me "No, let the flowers here". Years past. Six years after, I present a show at Monaco. I must present Whitney. I ask if it's possible anyone else can present her. I try to stay hide, i don't want she seeing me. But I have forgotten, we are all invited at Grimaldi's Palace for dinner. I'm at the Prince table, with Albert, Stéphanie and ... next to me : Whitney Houston ! I tried to turn my back but that's impossible. After an half hour, she said "I know your face. I'm sure i've seen you before. What's your name ?" I onely said at her ear "Serge Gainsbourg". She's laughing "What souvenir I remember. He was my worst nightmare !"
Serge Gainsbourg was a complex character. A great songwriter, recognized for his talent as a composer and lyricist, with subtle and poetic songs (and others in other styles) that reveal his great musical and literary culture. Some considere him a genius. But conversely, to counter his natural shyness he invented a public persona who was always drunk, looking dirty, provocative and cynical. Many of his provocations on TV are funny but here this is not the case, this is just bad.
After that, how can you tell French people aren't rude... Serge Gainsbourg was a very popular and talented artist. He was able to do the best and the worst at the same time. He used to smoke and drink a lot, and when he was drunk he presented himself as "Gainsbar" by reference to the "barre" (headache) you have after drinking too much. When being Gainsbar, he was an absolutely horrible person, but that was a complete part of the character. Gainsbourg was nothing without Gainbar.
He’s not representing all french people. Your comment is unfair and not acceptable. If we judge U.S people through Harvey Weinstein, what would you think?
Yes it is sad to met Serge Gainsbourg with this extract. It was not really him, or a kind of his personality. That was the character he played for TV in the 80's and sometimes he was a morons. But there are many extracts of him on TV where he was totally different. He was a great singer/composer. His songs was wonderful, very poetics.
Alcohol can effectively turn a man into "trou du c*l". Gainsbourg is one of the greatest French artists, but also very provocative. Unfortunately when he had drunk (a little too often), he showed his dark side "Gainsbard". He became unbearable, disrespectful and said shocking things. Although his goal was certainly to show his admiration for Whitney Houston (he was a great lover of women); he did not realize his unacceptably behavior from alcohol. In the context of that time, we were less shocked by certain things than today. In addition, alcohol and smoking were allowed on television. The situation could often go wrong.
It is a cult moment of French television, the presenter Michel Druker was mortified and did not know how to react. We must not forget also that he burned a 500 franc note (at the time) live in a political program and he knew very well besides he said it himself "what I am going to do there is punishable by the law". Unfortunately he was often drunk because he was very shy in real life. But we must not forget that he was one of the greatest artists of the time with very beautiful songs but also some controversial ones, he was a rebel at heart and that was expressed in his songs.
unfortunately you discover Gainsbar before discovering Gainsbourg : - Gainsbar est alcoolique, provocateur, et parfois comme ici odieux. Gainsbar sometimes insulted women and wrote song like "Mickey Maousse", but Gainsbourg wrote them songs like this one : ua-cam.com/video/LJx3HyV6g10/v-deo.html - Gainsbourg est un poète, musicien et artiste de génie. Pour ne prendre que des références internationales sa musique a été reprise ou "samplé" par des artistes comme Madonna, Iggy pop, Donna summer, Massive Attack, Beck, Danger Mouse (jack White), De la Soul, Miriam Makeba, Marianne Faithfull, David Guetta, Method Man(Wu-Tang Clan) Placebo, Fatboy Slim, Texas, Franz Ferdinand, Therion etc ........
That moment is iconic, I was in front of my tv with my parents when it happened, it was one of those shows in France everybody watch, in family. Michel Drucker, the host of the show is one, if ,not THE most popular in France. Serge Gainsbourg is one of thye best artist we had in France, very very very talented...but with a lot of provocation. He was as famous for his music than for his behaviours, anywhere, any time, during his shows, during interviews. And to be honnest, most of the people wanted to watch when he was a guest in live tv show because everyone wanted to know, what the hell he will say or do, as he was most of the time totally drunk and ferlt always free to say or do anything. That was the first time Withney Houston came in France, and you can imagine she was (and her team) very angry. It was long time ago, and even now we still have this in memory, even my kids born lot of years after the death of Gainsbourg (and even Witney) know this. Now it won't be possible to have something like this, but you have to know it made a big mess, near to be a political diplomatic between US and France. But well, it was Gainsbourg, a genious asshole, one of the best composer and poet ever. Hope you will watch and hear his work more than just stay on this provocativ behaviour
I agree that Gainsbourg's writing is pretty good, but it's unacceptable to see so many people defending him in the comments. What he did was horrible, and it is not the only time this happened. He was?'t a good person and I'm tired of seeing so many people defending him because he's a "genius". Love your videos by the way !
@@LilianEtchaide G’day from France. Fully agree with you. Talent doesn’t allow everything. We, in France, tend to excuse this kind of behaviour just because the bloke is more or less talented. He was just a disgrace
Very debatable. This was rude, obviously, but horrible? And he was not a good person because he was rude, really? That’s how your moral compass works? Don’t you think you’re overreacting?
@@tixien Sorry but your moral compass is pretty twisted if you think telling someone "I want to f*ck you" is acceptable or just a bit rude. And it is not the only example of this kind of behavior. I am a fan of his writing, but it doesn't excuse his actions. And it only being a "character" he plays is not an excuse (since the context in which he acts like this is not appropriate at all)

I remember this. It was in 1986, I was 7 or 8. He was drunk... as often... and he was so rude to her!!!! Poor Whitney. Serge Gainsbourg was talented and brilliant, but he was alcoholic (and smoked like craky), which made him often be out of control. He could be kind, he could be rude. Frankly, I've ne ver liked him, not a fan of his songs, even though a lot if people love them, and the man literally disgusted me. He was drunk, he looked dirty and neglected, he surely wore a horrible cold tobacco smell, and to be honest, I'm not sure he was very cleaned and showered enough...

Never believe in people who says "Don't judge him to hard !", because the more you know about this man and the worse it gets. 🫠 For some reasons there is a LOT of people thinking "talent" and alcool excuse disgusting behavior, especially in France. Don't judge him by this clip, he doesn't deserve that. Even if it is quite shocking and embarrassing, he was more than that. Gainsbourgh was a genius in music and became legendary in this art, he was a poet, a painter, a writer and many other things, and used to be a great seducer with women.. sadly he started to drink too much and was always drunk in his last days. He has always been controversial with his song basically, and started to do the same in front of camera. He lost himself in alcohol and cigarets, which is what killed him at the end. You should react to some of his songs to better understand the man
Gainsbourg was very well known for his music and songs (for sure not all Americans didn’t heard about him … even certain US maybe in the high society / intellectual knows him…but common US people for sure no) in brief he was very famous unfortunately at the end of his life he was sometimes very provocative for some unknown reason : in this show I really didn’t understand why he was totally unrespectful with Whitney Houston … It was him…. Today for sure he will not has the same aura and compassion than everyone had for him in the 80s / 90s and I quite understand that. For powerful people or politics I understand some ultra provocative behavior but with a very young and naive singer it was like a big gross horrible guy : but as it was The GRAND Serge Gainsbourg everything was forgivable ….
@@cmoiden37 Exactly, Gainsbourg in his song Aux armes etc.. literally reproduces in full with all the verses (whereas French people only know the first verse) the original text of the Marseillaise written in 1792 by Rouget de Lisle which includes the mention to the Arms etc... what perfectly knew Gainsbourg who was under the appearances very learned. He bought the original manuscript of the Marseillaise, silencing his detractors. This allowed us to teach the young French of the time the entirety of the words of the Marseillaise. He compensated his ugliness, his provocative side also by his immense culture and his qualities of lover because his former wives and many of his multiple mistresses of which several celebrities are unanimous to describe him as an exceptional lover. And Gainsbourg was not content to know and dare the eroticism, he also obviously knew how to practice sex wisely. It is not surprising that he seduced many very beautiful women whose most famous was Brigitte Bardot at the peak of her beauty in 1967-68 at 33-34 years old considered at the time as the most beautiful woman in the world; The same Brigitte Bardot who on the set of the film "Shalako" refused the advances of Sean Connery which she judged in contrast to Gainsbourg rude,, without education. In the competition with James Bond, it was Gainsbourg who won. And Bardot has in his memories a moving memory of his torrid sex with Gainsbourg Gainsbourg wrote for Bardot in 1967 at the end of a night of intense love, the sultry song Je t"aime moi non plus" which will make it known worldwide because re-recorded in 1969 with his new girlfriend Jane Birkin because Bardot then married to the German billionaire Gunther Sachs, had asked Gainsbourg not to release the record at the time, it will be the 1st French song ranked at the top of the British hit parade banned from broadcasting after 22 hours and outright censored in many countries because condemned by the pope which contributed to its success, the disc being sold clandestinely.Which will make Gainsbourg say that the pope was his best press officer.
Don't judge him too harshly. Just take the time to look at what his life and adolescence were like. As he said, "I was born under a lucky star...yellow." When your own school sends you to spend the night with an axe in the forest to protect you and keep you away from roundups, your faith in humanity and your country can be a little scratched!... He was provocative in public, but in fact, having known people who knew him when he was alive, they all told me that he was charming in private.
on the one hand it was a beautiful piece of trash. but also a good music composer. he was constantly drunk and found these pretexts to allow everything..

Absolutely
He burned a ticket of 500 f AT thé TV, which cause scandale AT thé time

I watched this show in live (Champs Elysées de Michel Drucker) with my parents, when i was 16 !!! Gainsbourg was totally drunk !

Serge Gainsbourg is a 🇫🇷 legend.
I remember that, it was choking. It was all the time like this, drunk, ....
Gainsbourg was drunk all the time, and obsessed by young women,
and he had a "weird" way to express his admiration to them.
10 records. 10 hits."
But once drunk (and he was for his last decade), Serge Gainsbourg became "Gainsbarre" and unfortunately, that day, he acted stupidly.
Obviously, everybody in the audience was shocked by that sentence.
And Gainsbourg knew that, even him was shocked a few hours later, understanding what he had said.
He will try to excuse himself.
Too bad you knew Serge with that because he is a massive legend in France, a fantastic poet and singer
It was a shock at this time Gainsbourg was a musical genius but so drunk
Whitney refused to come back in France for years after that night. Of course, what He did was inexcusable but He never did something like that again
So try to not judge him too harshly (on this unique inappropriate act) because He’s also a genius artist and his music is worthwhile
He was an artist, yes. But all you said about him is true!
I'm not sure it was the best way to present S.G. to D. 😋
But we must not forget that he was one of the greatest artists of the time with very beautiful songs but also some controversial ones, he was a rebel at heart and that was expressed in his songs.
unfortunately you discover Gainsbar before discovering Gainsbourg :
Gainsbar sometimes insulted women and wrote song like "Mickey Maousse", but Gainsbourg wrote them songs like this one : ua-cam.com/video/LJx3HyV6g10/v-deo.html

Now that is entertainment.
Un des meilleurs musicien
Never believe in people who says "Don't judge him to hard !", because the more you know about this man and the worse it gets. 🫠
For some reasons there is a LOT of people thinking "talent" and alcool excuse disgusting behavior, especially in France. (I'm french) 🤷🏻
He was trully a pervert and an awful human being.
😄🫣
Serge was... a little too much in his world 😅
Don't judge him by this clip, he doesn't deserve that. Even if it is quite shocking and embarrassing, he was more than that. Gainsbourg and Gainsbar was two faces of a same human being like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, an artist and a drunkard.... and on this set that night, it was obviously Gainsbar who was there. There are many songs by him that it worth listening to. I'll be never tired of listening to "requiem pour un con"
😂😂😂 Excellent Gainsbourg
Gainsbourg is the nice guy and Gainsbard (drunk) is awfull ! Nice poète good musician Jeckill & Hyde
When I saw that, if I didn't piss myself laughing, it's because I had just gone to the bathroom.🤣🤣
And Bardot has in his memories a moving memory of his torrid sex with Gainsbourg
Gainsbourg wrote for Bardot in 1967 at the end of a night of intense love, the sultry song Je t"aime moi non plus" which will make it known worldwide because re-recorded in 1969 with his new girlfriend Jane Birkin because Bardot then married to the German billionaire Gunther Sachs, had asked Gainsbourg not to release the record at the time, it will be the 1st French song ranked at the top of the British hit parade banned from broadcasting after 22 hours and outright censored in many countries because condemned by the pope which contributed to its success, the disc being sold clandestinely.Which will make Gainsbourg say that the pope was his best press officer.

He was provocative in public, but in fact, having known people who knew him when he was alive, they all told me that he was charming in private.
he was a great génius, you must listen to gainsbourg, but he was also a huge drinker, and it's 80s...
on the one hand it was a beautiful piece of trash.
but also a good music composer. he was constantly drunk and found these pretexts to allow everything..
