You are driving for shock value too.
For his target audience sounds like he is spot on, a high view with some details based on science without going too much into detail to keep people engaged.
Sure you can rip apart anything if you go nuanced enough, like you did here.
The "completely wrong" -> Muscle building OMAD vs 5 tiny meals -> technically might be correct, but for overall health it's much better to go OMAD, avoid spiking insulin,mTor constantly. So, simply the nuance was not explained there, and technically both are correct.

Before COVID, I trained at the end of my OMAD fast. All I can say is that I did surprisingly well fasted. I wasn't lifting quite as much, but I was losing weight. For the past year I have trained just before I begin my fast, and while I STILL lose weight, I actually have gotten a bit stronger. Anecdotal as hell, but I say you need carbs for weight lifting. For weight training, carbs. For cardio, ketones. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this what DeLauer is saying?

Good to see this kind of analysis and corrections. I do like most of DeLauer's stuff even if he's trying to churn out maybe too much content. He does frequently add a disclaimer that he doesn't have a science background and is just providing his interpretation, but maybe people don't always evaluate the info with the requisite pinch of salt.

Except Physionic is wrong at 10:22 . Our body's build cancer cells EVERYDAY. While at the same time our immune cells destroy cancer cells everyday. Point is that you will always have cancer cells ready to use that mtor. So having constantly elevated mtor levels will put you at greater risk in getting some serious cancer that your immune cells wont be able to destroy. So thomas DeLauer aint wrong in saying that it's better to only spike mtor once a day and having it high multiply times a day would only increase your risk on cancer.

@@DIYDSPUnfortunately he probably WON’T be forgiven by many in this crowd though. There are those for whom this type of criticism is nothing personal, just a corrective, those for whom it is career, and those for whom it is all about taking someone down. This channel seems to be mostly in the first two categories (in this case at least), though he did give his ‘heart signal’ to a comment implying that the subject is on ‘roids. As for some of his followers though, judge for yourself.

I missed where DeLauer says eating one meal with a high protein bolus is better than eating multiple moderate-sized bolus per day for protein synthesis. He was simply saying when you should workout during your fast (if you ARE fasting) and the reasoning behind it. I know he would agree with you since he encourages people that intermittent fast to eat at least two meals per day within a minimum 3-hour eating window.

I’m glad you reviewed this. I watched De Lauer’s video a couple of days ago. He presents the scientific jargon fluently and at top speed, and I’m glad to see it analyzed. I would like to know how to handle muscle growth while intermittent fasting as a lifestyle, (not as a body builder, as he obviously is, just as a person who is trying to increase muscle mass as an anti aging protocol…) and De Lauer’s videos seem helpful.: He certainly looks like he knows how to build muscles. There is also a physician who is a life long body builder, and an intermittent faster as lifestyle, who did a UA-cam interview on this subject, so it must be possible. How would you recommend this be accomplished?

but it is correct that activating mTOR all day every day is definitely going to enable those dark prophecies - which is why you need to also activate AMPK, with short- high-intensity interval training. Then taking a long time off, doing yoga etc.. rest like a monk. Don't overdo things.
Alternate between ice baths and saunas. Cold exposure can activate AMPK, while heat stress induces heat shock proteins, both of which can keep mTOR in check.

I have been following Thomas DeLauer channel from an Year now and I feel pretty satisfied with his content. Even if he is giving 70% correct information in his video (as you also said he is right in many parts) its worth it and probably more than what many doctors can give. I didn't know about mtor before and thanks to him I got to know about these terms which helped me to google more on this field. Even Many researches & doctors contradict over the same topic so I don't really find it surprising. Rather I give him the credit of bringing/creating a content that is atleast 70% correct into the general public without any high fees.

I don't think he's horribly off base on when to exercise (7:15). I viewed Thomas' discussion on muscle building just as you break a fast as... "when is it optimal to exercise when you're fasting?". I think he would agree that consuming protein multiple times a day over 3-5 meals would be better (most body builders wake in the middle of the night to consume protein) but I don't see how you're going to be doing that while on an intermittent fast. In IF you're going to be eating within a 6-8 hour window... eating 5 meals would be... difficult (nonstop basically) and the rest of the day you're not going to be able to eat anything. His point is that the best time to train when on IF is when you're breaking the fast for peak mTor. Personally I think he's trying to tweak the system a little too much... doubt it makes a huge difference.

But sir, the second study you are referring says that the group that takes 40g x 2 times every 6 hours meaning that the first 40 grams where taken right after the training does not give the body enough time to start the body to initiate the synthesis, this mean that great part of the total intake is converted into glucose or something or used for other purposes other than building new muscle, compared to the 20g x 4 times intake

But I would never say that it is the best way to build muscle. I also lift weights and I tend to do so fasted but I'm not out to maximize muscle growth, I just want some muscle growth and generally to be as healthy as possible. To me health is about balance and not even seeking any extremes.

I'm really hooked in your videos and your approach is superb... I'm not sure about the resistance training in a fasted workout and on a Keto/Carnivore Diet, I'm not an expert but I haven't seen any decrease but it increases my performance. I got stronger and I do minimal reps based on what I studied due to the type of muscle fiber I use during my workout... also, I have been hacking my body for quite sometime now...
I do 23 hours OMAD, including my workout, so I still do fasted workout. Then I eat 15 raw eggs and prepare for some bacons and beef karubi or any meat available... I easily get full sometimes I can only eat less than 200g of meat. I also do black coffee to start the day and some ACV before bedtime.
My Workout Routine: Weighted Calisthenics/Gymnastics/Resistance Training (Deadlift/Squats)
45 mins - 1 hour - Everyday (Except when I feel super fatigue, then I'll do active rest by then)
    Some of high intense workout:
    One Arm pull up
    Planche
    Front Lever to Muscle Up
    Front Lever freestyle
Gymnastic Rings (Dips, Weighted Dips, Weighted MUs, Planche)
The only downside I'm beginning to realize is the lactic acid I was feeling before I transition to Keto/Carnivore. I am prone to injury especially tendonitis since most of my trainings involved tendons on those movements I mentioned.

At 3:46 you have a table.
Doesn't that table show that with fasted exercise they lost more weight on average than non-fasted exercise?
Isn't that result perfectly consistent with the hypothesis and therefore in no way refutes the hypothesis?
True, the difference between the two was not statistically significant. But the evidence from the trial was not evidence against the hypothesis at all. The evidence, if anything was supportive of and consistent with the hypothesis. It just provided weak support.
When a difference is not statistically significant, it doesn't mean that a difference doesn't exist. It means that you can't be confident about the difference. That the difference in fact might simply be due to noise, to sampling error, rather than to the true and unknown difference, whatever that may be.

3:03 doesn't make sense, since the time under stress is only a few minutes, this is insufficient to explain the prevention of breakdown during the many hours after training...after all nobody is training 24/7.
3:22 jogging is a bad example. As long as you run out of breath, you're not getting sufficient energy from burning fat. Hiking or cycling would be much more realistic choices if the goal is to burn only fat.
Also the main point of fasting is spiking the levels of HGH in your blood which maximizes muscle growth. So combining fasting/intermittent fasting with training is very sensible as long as you stay in ketosis.

I think what DeLauer meant by "growing tumors" was "failing to starve tumors". He didn't mean "make healthy cells turn cancerous."
Everybody is constantly growing tumors that our bodies kill while they are still microscopic. As our immune system weakens with age, these tumors begin to survive longer. For decades. Too small to notice, but still alive enough to get bigger.
Keto deprives them of sugar, and fasting triggers autophagy for our body to eat them.
If we keep our bodies in an MTOR state all the time, these tumors never get killed off.

I subscribe to Thomas’ Channel and while I agree with some of what he prescribes as factually sone of what he says checks out. But sadly other things he prescribes do not factually check out, and can even be outright dangerous given individual differences among people due to underlying health issues, differences in genetic predispositions and contextual differences in lifestyle(age, level of activity, differences in total calories, etc.,). Sometimes his cookie cutter prescriptions where he recommends all his viewers eat a certain way can be problematic or outright dangerous. I have pointed this out to Thomas in comments but he ouright ignores them and continues to be a repeat offender. He also lost a lot of credibility with me when he was interviewed about his Fasting Expertise on Simon Hill’s The Proof Podcast. There he said Calories In Calories Out Trump All and he 100% agrees. Then he went back on his channel and did a total flip flop on that and said something to the effect. Calories don’t matter at all hate on me all you want. You would be hard pressed to fact check Simon Hill Of The Proof Podcast or Dr Gil Carvalho as they all put out consistent, research, and evidence based information. Simon particularly loves to play Devil’s Advocate and gives equal weight to all critques of research before fully explaining these away and factually pushing back to cut through misinformation and false narratives For that reason, Simon Hill for me earns 100% credibility.

I think his channel is full of misinformation but:
Your study use whey as a protein so quite inadequate/particular (he could argue that a real meal lenghten mps AUC because of higher non-EAA among other things) especialy as there is little difference in "bolus" versus "intermediate" and "pulse". But his reasoning(and channel) probably also advocate for a scoop of whey powder (though not 80g like the study!)
As for some harmfull effect of leucine you can call upon lack of context but I could say the same with your statement that maybe too easily dismiss the relation between protein and disease like cancer. Your "overconsumption" point is also driven by some mechanism that include excess leucine through many mechanism.
I like when you are the one who see other people "getting caught up in mechanism"... ;)
Speaking of which, why would one actively try to stimulate mtor (especialy focusing on one AA) because muscle is made in the gym if your muscle did not reach its full size yet (few months/year) mostly independantly of your diet (longterm).
    Thanks for the vid.

    • @Physionic
      @Physionic  Рік тому +2

Well, as usual, I have to disagree. For example, you say there's little difference, but the AUC was measured and it was a 30 to almost 50% increase in protein synthesis with the intermediate condition; that's a *massive* difference. He does advocate for protein powder, as mentioned in the video. Protein consumption doesn't cause cancer, it's as simple as that - there's a correlation there, but the causative agents are overconsumption and poor lifestyle, not protein - outright.
I don't follow? I showed human clinical data to substantiate my point - I don't know how much less mechanism I can get.
I don't understand your last point. Why actively try to simulate mTOR? Because it leads to greater muscle growth. If your point is that muscle made in the gym reaches its full size after a few months to a year, that's just incorrect, but I'm not sure what your point is, so I may be misreading.

@@Physionic I did not say there was no difference, fsr going from 0.053 to 0.079 is indeed 50% on 8 people for a sub-sub_sub marker of muscle gains, you will see no difference after few month (one group will simply have more linear newbie gains) in different group and that what I call "a little" and you call "massive" but that is quite subjective I guess and in the end it does not change my point about whey being different from a meal (at 80g per day). but maybe he do advocates for protein powder as part of every meal idk...
some proteins definitely have a causal link to cancer (type 1 carcinogen) when cooked/fermented/digested (HCA,nitrosamine etc), now reasearch about animal protein are also quite dirty in all board (not only cancer) obviously not all is attributable to proteins but methionine and leucine litterature do not look as good other AA (beside mouse's fur or fitness-muscle-subfield). as you said "mtor is heavily involved in cancer growth" and that alone would justify delauer caution warning on excess leucine. the fact that this sub-pathway ""require other aspects of the cell"" (that will happen as we age with sun, food etc) do not really allow a strawman like one will not develop cancer SPONTANEOUSLY from consuming proteins. it is many aspects that make disease like cancer in a population and leucine is an aspect of it that his viewers might need to know. leucine/proteins is also an aspect of people overconsumption (you even have a mouse vid on this kind of line of argument I believe) like lack of fiber etc.
less mechanism? for? it is a global remark not especialy related to this vid related to your channel interested in microlevel/pathways etc. mouse study, fitness biomarker study are also interesting not a critic here. I guess you also do higher in hierarchy of evidence, bigger epidemiological data, better endpoint (death, muscle gains over a year) etc. especialy now that you do series on stuff (though insulin and SFA is still microlevel). no real critic here, I enjoy this kind of content too.
as the last point no if you consume what people consume in proteins in general (between 1g and 2g/kg) you will grow muscle (given proper exercise, sleep etc) and it will follow a log curve("newbie gains"etc) so people will naturally catch up to each other. so ACTIVELY looking to stimulate mtor (for muscle, "focusing" on leucine) is indeed useless(keyword is "actively" looking).
lastly it is probably indeed misreading or rather my english that is to blame.
I said few months/year meaning can be more than a year (depending on its initial state and how hidden he his biomechanically, so can easily be 2year for an untrained average male biceps). my point was after its full size it is maintenance not really gains. Delauer you and other fitness youtuber you will not grow in size anymore (unless on gear) on trained muscle. still have hidden details (untrained calf, neck etc) but your protein need is unlikely to be the very seldom outlayer that could theoretically slightly benefiting from 1.8g/kg outlayer (log curve again so 1.7g is the same). Muscle reaching its full size after after few month/year (depending on its initial state) is otherwise obviously correct I would not even see what else could be contested here beside the upper misunderstanding unless one claim that there is no limit (or that you have to sleep well, not eating only grapes etc). especially as I said "size" not even strength.
