I remember at Tom Kitt's American Songbook concert when he was introducing this song, he said, "For anyone who heard this song when Next to Normal was at Second Stage, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time."
I know why they cut it, it needed to be cut, but it really showed the mania which IS a part of BPD and it is something they failed to continue to show throughout the show.
It happens after Pefect [Which was later replaced by Everything Else] .You see, in the Broadway production, we find out there is something wrong w/Diana when she is making sandwiches in "Just Another Day". That never happened in the 2nd stage production. "Costco" is the song that tells us that there is something wrong w/Diana.
This song is very clever! I was reading somewhere that the writers decided to cut all cuteness from the show after the off-broadway run. I love this song but I do see why they cut it.
I just closed Next to Normal where I played Diana and I would sing this song as my warm up to get into Diana's headspace! I really wish they hadn't cut this song!
I love this scene . . . I love when she says "I mean who is she to judge me? Stupid sample lady . . . " I love the tone of her voice when she says "sample". LOL
Okay, I understand why they cut this song, But I also would have understood keeping it in. And It only now seems so out of place because so many of us never saw it and got used to the tone as it currently stood for so long after this was cut, BUT if it has never been cut, I think it would continue to make perfect sense -- for the manic episode component-- and its vocally impressive, and gives a little HIGH to balance the lows. Damn! I can't believe I am just discovering this! Now my only lingering question is, between which other songs was this formerly placed? AND was anything else cut?!? I know "Mountains" had some lyric changes, as well as another song or two, but were there other full songs CUT??!??
I totally agree with you. I do understand why they took this out of the show..but this song is just SO insanely creative! Alice is incredible..of course. And you gotta love Brian's part at the end. haha.
ive seen the show at arena and i am kinda glad they cut this. it really doesnt add anything to the show...im not trying to bash it im literally obsessed with this show just the way it is.
Ahh, while I'm glad this isn't in the show, I do love this song :) Alice gives an amazing, kooky, hilarious performance :D, and the lyrics are great! Thanks for uploading :)
OMG!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Alice Ripley!! I think 1:32 is hilarious! I think it's ok that they took this song out but I love that part! I love Alice's interpretation of Diana!
This song is great to show Diana’s mania (and it was a great reference to “here’s the headline in the papers when you freaked out at the market) but it really doesn’t fit the show at all. Amazing song but definitely not the vibe
@ShodieSaner Eh, it is kind of a stereotype but my mother and I are both bipolar and she did spend a few thousand dollars at the peak of her manic episode once, so I know it does happen. I agree it was a bit much for the show though.
DIANA In the olden days of shopping a mother thought of stopping in the village at the tiny general store. But today the modern mommy who needs turnips or salami takes the SUV to somewhere where there's more. She rolls that giant cart right through that giant, giant door. Costco, oh oh oh, costco. Where the lonely and lost go to buy what they lack. Where baked beans and hammers come twelve to a pack. There mayonaise and vats and tampons and hats! There's mac and cheese in packs of threes and teas imported from Belize and extra excitement in store. For women like me who need more, and more, and more! Like stereos and bar-be-ques and wine and giant boxes. And bad cds and dvds and bvds and sockses! And a cherry pie so giant I don't know where to begin I might slice myself a slice or I might dive the hell right in! photos Here's a gallon tub of cottage cheese, the kind with giant curds and the chocolate coated chocolate is just too divine for words. Though the woman with the samples caught me coming back for thirds! [spoken] Well, fuck 'er! Who is she to judge me? Stupid sample lady. [sung] Costco, buh dup buh dup, Costco! Where the tired tempest-tossed go to save their insides. With champagne and sweatpants and radio tires With children to feed I know what I need. (backup: Cheddar cheese!) And one super block of cheddar jack cheese They make super doorstops, I'll take three please. (backup: Oooh) Doritos and Fritos and Cheetos and such... The choice is the choosing-- [spoken] it's a little bit much... [sung] It's salmon and soy beans and salt and sorbet. A wurlitzer organ I can't even play! A washer, a dryer, a plasma tv! And thirteen new britas, the fourteenth is free! And three new computers, we need them no doubt! And printers and WHAT? you say that you're out? So have them sent here from some other store and send them to me in tears on the floor! I'll just be lying here waiting for more, and more, and more, and more, and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and moooore! [spoken] Gimme that. [sung] Aaaaaaand... More! [spoken] Clean up, aisle seven!
It was right after Natalie sings "Perfect" (which was replaced with "Everything Else") and meets Henry...now it sadly just goes onto Psychopharmacologist.
hahaha story of my life! i could live in costco and be really happy! in fact, i could live off thier frozen yogurt. alice ripley..........you win. you win so freaking much. it blows my mind!
i see why this was cut, but this song rocks. alice ripley is a rockstar and her acting.. well needless to say it's beyond phenomenal. myy hero. haha love! really this song.. is great!
People in the comments are a bit too mean to this song lol...of course to each their own opinions but in itself the song is really fun and catchy- and despite being a bit stereotypical-ish, it does a great job of showing more of Diana during her manic episodes (which we only really see at the beginning of the musical). Some people say it doesn't fit the mood of the musical, which I kind of agree with but at the same time the entire musical is ridden with humor all throughout! Sure, a whole song that's just entertaining may be pushing it a bit, but yaknow, a bit of high to balance out all the lows of the musical wouldn't have been so bad. You guys are just massively depressed
OMG this is so gooooooooood! which scene is this? i only know the broadway version and im just so curious! at least i know this is not off-broadway version...so washington verison??? please someone kind answer this question!!!!
I was thinking of that too all I could think of was later in the show Natalie mantions that she freaked out at the market so maybe this is the freakout...but I'm not entirely sure
This isn't out of character. Actually, even though it's a bit out of the musical general mood and also doesn't really have link in the story, it does a really good job to show her manic episode !
www.dropbox.com/s/l6d5ean8f7kjhmt/Next%20To%20Normal%20%28Off-Broadway%29%20-%20Complete%20PV%20Score.pdf?dl=0 Titled "More... and More... and More" It's slightly different from this one, but the differences are miniscule.
Ugh. I'm so glad they cut this. The whole "manic shopping" thing of bipolar people is such a stereotype. I know many bipolar people- and they NEVER do this. It's insulting to say the least. We definitely see the manic side of Diana in the show as is- that's what the whole opening sequence is. She's up at 4AM in one of her episodes.
I remember at Tom Kitt's American Songbook concert when he was introducing this song, he said, "For anyone who heard this song when Next to Normal was at Second Stage, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time."
No matter your opinion on the song, you HAVE to admire the vocal stamina Alice Ripley had to have for this number.
So this is were the
"Freaking out at the store"
Line came from!
"Who is she to judge me? Stupid sample lady." lol. It did need to be cut, but its still hilarious...
I've never heard this song, but I really think it helps illustrate the mania that Diana was going through a lot more. I wish they'd kept it!
A friend of mine is bi-polar, and I showed her this song. She laughed and said at the end it really does sound like a Manic episode.
I know why they cut it, it needed to be cut, but it really showed the mania which IS a part of BPD and it is something they failed to continue to show throughout the show.
But its offensive and this version was more of a comedy
It happens after Pefect [Which was later replaced by Everything Else] .You see, in the Broadway production, we find out there is something wrong w/Diana when she is making sandwiches in "Just Another Day". That never happened in the 2nd stage production. "Costco" is the song that tells us that there is something wrong w/Diana.
I'm sad this was cut. I understand why it was cut but they could've put it on the soundtrack as a bonus track!
But why would it need to be in the show i think it was replaced with the much better sandwiches on the floor joke
Ok but Natalie's piano at the beginning was so good
This song is very clever! I was reading somewhere that the writers decided to cut all cuteness from the show after the off-broadway run. I love this song but I do see why they cut it.
Does not fit at all but I'm SUPER SURPRISED I've never heard of this song. Guess I didn't know as much about N2N as I thought.
I wouldn't mind seeing Aaron Tveit at my local Costco.
This had giant "I'm Breaking Down" from Falsettos vibes.
True
I'm playing Diana and I work at Costco... WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS SONG?! P.S. I'm about to start annoying the shit out of my coworkers...
I just closed Next to Normal where I played Diana and I would sing this song as my warm up to get into Diana's headspace! I really wish they hadn't cut this song!
#innapropriateauditionsong
I love this scene . . . I love when she says "I mean who is she to judge me? Stupid sample lady . . . "
I love the tone of her voice when she says "sample". LOL
I would be so pissed off if I were Alice Ripley and learned all those lyrics just for the song to be cut. Its a great song!
I was thinking the same thing, 9 years later.
I gotta say: I kinda dig this
Okay, I understand why they cut this song, But I also would have understood keeping it in. "Here's the headline in the paper when you freaked out at the market..." Thinking that line may apply to this song?
lol why didnt costco pick this up for their commercials XD
ive seen the show at arena and i am kinda glad they cut this. it really doesnt add anything to the show...im not trying to bash it im literally obsessed with this show just the way it is.
This is genious. I love it! Wish it were still in the production.
Ahh, while I'm glad this isn't in the show, I do love this song :)
Alice gives an amazing, kooky, hilarious performance :D, and the lyrics are great!
Thanks for uploading :)
she's just absolutely amazing
alice is fuckin brilliant. even in the cut songs.
OMG!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Alice Ripley!!

Next time i go to costco, i am totally going to preform that song in the middle of the store!!! (problem: i wayyyy too shy)
Do it anyway, and if the sample lady judge you, well, fuck her!
This wasn't in the version I saw! LOL. Awesome
I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH IT MAKES MY SEROTONIN GO ^^^^^^

it was so much more campy off-broadway, I get the feeling.
Im so sad they took this out. it was one of my favorite parts of the show :(
she's amazing. End of story
"Who is she to judge me?"
i love this song!
Yup. Completely going to Costco from now on guys. If Diana says its good it has to be xD
Whoa... I've never seen this part! Its hilarious! But I'm kinda glad they took it out. It doesn't seem to fit.
It was right after Natalie sings "Perfect" (which was replaced with "Everything Else") and meets Henry...now it sadly just goes onto Psychopharmacologist.
I hope it will stay around a lot longer. I really hope it lasts longer than the Phantom!! haha
Well, do I have terrible news for you, from the future.
I used to be a sample lady at Costco so this kind of amusing to me :p I wish they didn't cut it :S
I love me some Alice Ripley
hahaha story of my life! i could live in costco and be really happy! in fact, i could live off thier frozen yogurt.
alice ripley..........you win.
you win so freaking much. it blows my mind!
Does this remind anyone of “I’m Breaking Down”??
Does anyone have an instrumental to this amazing song?!?!
alice ripley rocks!!
WHY WAS THIS CUT? ITS AMAZING!
There was no space for real weak link songs in the final production... and this is a bit of a weak link............... sorry to say..............
No I wish it was still in the show
i see why this was cut, but this song rocks. alice ripley is a rockstar and her acting.. well needless to say it's beyond phenomenal. myy hero. haha love! really this song.. is great!
I need the sheet music for this song!!
@SapAndJil "Soxes" makes me laugh everytime.
i think that Costco sponsored the show =]
When would this be in the show. If it were in the show. I can't think of a part it may be at. But this performance is bliss.
It's a cut song! They did it probably in the first performance then decided not to include it in the soundtrack and for the rest
@@headhole1934 I think the question was more “At what moment in the show was this song placed at?”
Question: Where did this actual fit in the show? I've been thinking this over the past couple of days and really couldn't figure it out...
This song should have also stayed with the show.
People in the comments are a bit too mean to this song lol...of course to each their own opinions but in itself the song is really fun and catchy- and despite being a bit stereotypical-ish, it does a great job of showing more of Diana during her manic episodes (which we only really see at the beginning of the musical). this would totally work in another show...
now i REALLY want to go to Costco and just sing this! :D i crack up at 1:32everytime!!!!!!!
OMG this is so gooooooooood!
which scene is this? i only know the broadway version and im just so curious! at least i know this is not off-broadway version...so washington verison???
please someone kind answer this question!!!!
NYBroadwayelphie it’s right after Natalie meets Henry for the first time.
I was thinking of that too all I could think of was later in the show Natalie mantions that she freaked out at the market so maybe this is the freakout...but I'm not entirely sure
this is a great video! COSTCO rules!
this is so out of character its hilarious
This isn't out of character. Actually, even though it's a bit out of the musical general mood and also doesn't really have link in the story, it does a really good job to show her manic episode !
what scene is before this with henry nd nat?? do you have the vid.?
Does anyone have the sheet music for this???
in what scene did they say aaron wore boxers because i read about it in some blogs?
@AliaSparrow well this song would be part of the mania. its supposed to be different but i can see why they cut it.
i meant to say and did the replace it with a song tht wasnt originally there?
im really glad they took this song out. it doesnt go with the rest of the score at all
Do you have Just Another Day, It's Gonna Be Good, Superboy and the Invisible Girl, It's Gonna Be Good (Reprise), Why Stay, and Light
this is the part where she freaks with the sandwich's on the floor
this is funny
where was this in the show when it was in there? and why did they take it out?
I still quote this experience of seeing it live as a benchmark for well-intended, but awful musical theater songs...
At what part of the show did this scene originally exist?
yeah they cut this song. have fun at the show!
I'm pretty sure its in Just ANother Day, I'm not sure though
thanks
The OBC will be still in. Aaron is returning in September
Or this could have shown one of her episode
that makes sence becuase it's not on the soundtrack.
haha costco #357
2st. It was cut after about a month because it broke up the flow of the show.
why
why not
Y THEY CUT THIS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
i thought this got cut?
i'm really glad they got rid of this song.
DOES ANYONE HAVE THE SHEET MUSIC PLEASEEE

LMAO costco #325
This might have been trying to show how crazy she can be
Ugh. I'm so glad they cut this. The whole "manic shopping" thing of bipolar people is such a stereotype. I know many bipolar people- and they NEVER do this. It's insulting to say the least.

this song doesnt really match the rest of the music...
