So, DR2 was the first Danganronpa game I played. I didn't play DR1 myself, but I've seen a couple of let's plays on it. Rantaro's backstory is exactly what I thought DR2 Byakuya's backstory was before I learned he wasn't actually Byakuya: A survivor of a killing game being the first one to die.
Theory: In my opinion, based on his room he’s the ultimate tinker. Or he is the ultimate everything. When I first looked at his room I immediately thought that he would be some sort of inventor but since Miu is already the ultimate inventor that couldn’t be it. So then I decided he could be the ultimate tinker. But then I looked at his room again and it has everything in it. So he could also be the ultimate everything. Meaning he is good at everything.

I don't believe he was ever executed, and it isn't clarified whether he murdered or actually just survived that long, but he was a part of a different killing game and he won (hence his title ultimate survivor). After he won, he chose to do another killing game in hopes to end the killing game permanently, which he attempted to do in chapter 1 before he was killed.
