Going to a brand new camp this year. Last year was so horrible. But I’m optimistic for this year. So glad to be on leadership team again. But I get to work with the kids more this time. For people scared to make friends, it’s the orientation that kicks off the bond between everyone. Just like Ally said, you make friends fast. Especially if with who your living with.
Me and my friends are all really centemental about last summer which was our first and are afraid we wont have as much fun and it wont be the same, but you are right no summer is ever gonna be as good as your first,which i think will really help us this summer. but now are so excited because we know what its like and we know we will have an amazing time!
Hey Ally! Although I didn’t really need the Q&A I love watching your camp videos just to get me excited for camp so thank you! All the answers are probably the same as I would’ve given, our camps sound very similar :) going for my 4th summer this year and cannot wait. Also if anyone is thinking of going when they’re a little older (I was 23 my first summer) you have nothing to worry about, age doesn’t really mean a thing at camp as everyone is friends with each other and you can get just as much out of it at any age. Best thing I every did was go to camp in 2016 :) have a great summer Ally x

Ally Sheehan I had my visa appt in London on May 1st - biggest shock ever when they handed me back my passport the same day !! something to do with administrative processing I had to give them heaps of info like everywhere I’ve been since 2004 - nuts ! so yeah probs just gonna use my flights for a holiday if I still get an esta !

Orientation starts this Saturday, was meant to be flying today to ireland and then on to jfk on wednesday. talked to my agency and my camp director and i'm not working this summer sadly :( Hopefully gonna use my flights to visit during camp vacay week so i can at least see my friends!! thanks for the love, have a fab time!!

I went to a week long summer camp last year and it was really sad because my cabin had grown so close… until a counselor got Covid and we all had to go home two days early and we cried so much….. now I leave in 1 month and 25 days so I am able to see all of them again!
Your videos are very helpful !! I do think that camp is the best place to make friends from all over the world, my first time being a counselor and feeling every good feeling at once (I´m from Bolivia btw). Definitely re-watching ¨The Parent Trap¨ before or during my flight to the US.

I’m worrying that I’m too young and am not ready to leave my father on his own, however I’m going to try and push myself out of my comfort zone and just go. I need some inspiration in my life for my future and I’m hoping by stepping out of my comfort zone I will find where I belong.
I'm so proud of you Sophie. I totally understand what it's like feeling like you need to be there for a family member, but I'm certain he would want you to take this opportunity for yourself too. If you're looking for inspiration and bringing some spark back into your life, camp can do just that
Definitely depends on where your camp is located. But if your camp is in the north east (mine is in Pennsylvania) IT RAINS. A LOT. 😂 bring a rain jacket or make that a priority on your first trip to walmart! For phones If you’re from the UK and worried about sim cards the carrier 3 is great and allows you to use your phone in the states. Im getting a sim only contract for 3 months and it’s between £10-£20

I was a counselor at a camp last year and unfortunately it wasn’t the experience that I had hoped for, for various different reasons. I’m really considering doing camp again at another camp but so scared that it won’t be the right camp for me again😭
Emma I was a counselor last year too and I’m ending up switching camps. My advice to you is to see what place treats you like family when doing your interview.
I;m so sorry to hear that!! I have 3 friends who came to my camp as their second try and said going somewhere new was really good. Maybe speak to the agency about what things didn't work for you and see if they can place you somewhere that ticks those boxes

When I was a camp counselor it was havoc wrecking yet great experience. Working with kids felt more like babysitting to me. We did alot with them. But the mimimun wage and favoritism is wat fucked me up. But then again everything has a reason it happens

@@AllySheehan I was doing more work than the other counselors yet the manager always still let then do whatever but always had some to say to me about what im doing wrong or whatever and on top of that working 10 hours and 5 days a week for $3 an hour was just so much lol
Can you still apply to a camp if you don’t have like a Specific skill that you do/ are trained in? Because I want to be a counselor in the summer in between when I’m at university - so I wont really have any skills/ qualifications since I will have just left high school at 18
Also, I would be ready for a possible charge being taken out of your check. If you (knock on wood) get lice, or need some special prescription. The head won’t tell you, it’ll just be on your check stub that it was taken out. Unless you pay out of pocket.
When you’re a general camp counsellor, do you have to share a room with the kids, or is there an option to only share with other counsellors? I’m considering doing camp America next year but am concerned about this element as I’m a really light sleeper, and so being with loads of kids will definitely disrupt my sleep and I don’t want to be tired the whole time x
montel gordon Hey! It totally depends on you & your budget. You can get by spending next to no money as your meals and such are all paid for. I usually spent $30 on a day off (food, drinks, car hire, movie ticket etc) but more if I wanted to go shopping, go tubing or do some other sort of paid activity. Some days I went hiking and packed food from camp which was entirely free :) I would suggest bringing a few hundred in cash but you can use your debit card or access ATMs any time x
adding on to what ally has said, it depends on the location and what near your camp. For example $30 in Maine isn’t going to be the same to $30 in New York. So make sure you take an appropriate amount of money for the area you’ll be in

I haven't got a ton of experience with young kids, but I definitely have some sort of experience with older kids (13-17) through my years in my school's cadet program, do I need experience with younger kids to be a camp counselor??
Totally up to you!! It depends on what kind of travel you want to do, where you want to go, if you're flying or driving, if you do expensive tourist attractions or just camp somewhere and explore! I'd personally allow $1000-$3000 :)

@@kimberlyidol DUDE ... it's SO good. Last Summer I ate 3 bowls of it in one sitting and holy heck it's incredible. There's also this bean and cheese quesadilla omgggggg seriously they've stepped up the vegan game. It's calling you!!
@@AllySheehan 😩I neeeeeeeed those!!! I lost a significant amount of weight (unintentionally) that summer from literally living off of pbj, although the time me and Lana brought our own cheese to canteen and got a vegan cheesey bagel was worth it all

When I was a camp counselor it was havoc wrecking yet great experience. Working with kids felt more like babysitting to me. We did alot with them. But the mimimun wage and favoritism is wat fucked me up. But then again everything has a reason it happens
Oh it's definitely minimum wage haha! My first Summer I was paying to work there. So sorry to hear about the favouritism though, can you explain what you mean by that?
@@AllySheehan I was doing more work than the other counselors yet the manager always still let then do whatever but always had some to say to me about what im doing wrong or whatever and on top of that working 10 hours and 5 days a week for $3 an hour was just so much lol

Can you still apply to a camp if you don’t have like a Specific skill that you do/ are trained in? Because I want to be a counselor in the summer in between when I’m at university - so I wont really have any skills/ qualifications since I will have just left high school at 18
Also, I would be ready for a possible charge being taken out of your check. If you (knock on wood) get lice, or need some special prescription. The head won’t tell you, it’ll just be on your check stub that it was taken out. Unless you pay out of pocket.
When you’re a general camp counsellor, do you have to share a room with the kids, or is there an option to only share with other counsellors? I’m considering doing camp America next year but am concerned about this element as I’m a really light sleeper, and so being with loads of kids will definitely disrupt my sleep and I don’t want to be tired the whole time x

Hey. How much money would you recommend to bring to summer camp? And how much did you spend on days off?
montel gordon Hey! It totally depends on you & your budget. You can get by spending next to no money as your meals and such are all paid for. I usually spent $30 on a day off (food, drinks, car hire, movie ticket etc) but more if I wanted to go shopping, go tubing or do some other sort of paid activity. Some days I went hiking and packed food from camp which was entirely free :)
I would suggest bringing a few hundred in cash but you can use your debit card or access ATMs any time x
adding on to what ally has said, it depends on the location and what near your camp. For example $30 in Maine isn’t going to be the same to $30 in New York. So make sure you take an appropriate amount of money for the area you’ll be in

I haven't got a ton of experience with young kids, but I definitely have some sort of experience with older kids (13-17) through my years in my school's cadet program, do I need experience with younger kids to be a camp counselor??

I’ve been looking into CCUSA and I was wondering seen as we can travel 30 days before and 30 days after, how much money I would need to take ?
Totally up to you!! It depends on what kind of travel you want to do, where you want to go, if you're flying or driving, if you do expensive tourist attractions or just camp somewhere and explore! I'd personally allow $1000-$3000 :)
