    Always count your campers, especially when you have younger groups. They tend to wander off without telling you.
    Also do a "Bottle Check" make sure they have their waterbottle, sunscreen, hat, whatever they brought after each activity. Lost and found is always full at the end of the week so take the 10 seconds to ask them if they have everything.

    • @AllySheehan
      @AllySheehan  6 років тому +4

      You said it!! I had older ones and still made them do a count off every day haha.

    • @alexray230
      @alexray230 6 років тому

      I always have middle schoolers and I count like five times, the other two boys counselors count five times each, all the girls counselors count just as much too. If I'm standing still at camp looking around slowly, I'm probably counting

    The Holy Trinity for sending your campers out for activities.
    1. Full water bottle
    2. Bug and Sunscreen
    3. Closed toe shoes
    Ally is right, leave the outside world, don’t worry about stuff at home, don’t worry about the small stuff.
    Learn to pick your battles, don’t sweat the small things, your having this amazing experience and don’t let anyone ruin these months!

    I love your comment about keeping a journal because that's what I used to do for school trips abroad as a teenager (I also did this on a family trip to Sri Lanka 2 years ago, but there ended up being some gaps in it), but I always wrote SO MUCH. I'm planning to take my journal with me to the weekend Guides county camp I'm going to this July!
    I feel unsure if I should ever apply to be a camp counsellor because I get overwhelmed easily by the noise of lots of people talking at the same time, and being a Guides leader, I manage to deal with it at just 2 hours a week, but I don't think I can be that "on" for 2 months straight.

    Hey Ally! I was curious about travelling after camp like how much you usually budget, and also if it's hard to meet people at camp who you can travel with after? I was also wondering if you think it would be too hard to be a counsellor for someone who is a bit introverted/shy? Thanks! Love your vids x

    • @AllySheehan
      @AllySheehan  6 років тому

      Hey Riley!
      Budgeting is honestly totally up to you! I know some people who spent $3000, some who spent under $1000.
      It depends if you want to stay in one place or visit many, fly vs. motorhome vs. campervan vs. regular car (and thus hotels vs. motels) and so on - there's a lot of room for choice :)
      Personally I think the salary you'll earn at camp is pretty much enough to travel on, but that's if you're not spending loads of it while you're working.
      and no I don't necessarily think so! I feel like a role in the Arts Shack or something could be quite fitting, where it's a more low-energy environment and doesn't involve as much entertaining, just coming up with projects and helping kids get creative :)

    What is the average age of a camp counselor? I am a teacher and am considering doing camp counseling over the summer, but I don't want to be the oldest counselor.

    Hi, I’m filling out my application now and they want 10 skills (and some of the things I do aren’t even included) I’m intermediate level in most of them, is that ok? I prefer trying new things so I wouldn’t even say there was something I’m an expert at. They said I would be guaranteed a place but it seems like they’re looking for people who are more advanced with their skills. Do you think it’s worth carrying on? I’ve already paid the deposit :(

    would you say working with the 15/16 yr old girls is more or less hard work and/or draining then working with younger kids? I'm thinking of applying to camp but don't know what age group id be more suited to

      riley murdoch hi. Ik the question wasn’t geared towards me, but I thought I’d add my two cents!! I got the pleasure of being with 15/16 year old girls, as well as 11/12 y/os, this past summer at camp, and being with the teens was honestly the best! I was extremely intimidated at first bc I was so close in age with them (18) but it’s soooo much fun!! It was like having a sleepover every night for two weeks!! Personally, I believe it’s a lot easier in a sense because they’re older, so they’re a lot more independent. And pretty much all of my girls had grown up going to that camp, so they knew the routine. Which is nice because you do not have to constantly remind them to do things, but beware of the drama. Just gotta watch out for the cliques and cattiness at times. Also, sometimes its a little harder getting them excited to do things because they’re older. That was the only con I had (drama). Other than that, working with that age group is absolutely wonderful!!! I got extremely close to my girls, and had the best weeks of camp with them. I love older kids because I like having real conversations, and being able to relate to them more. Especially that age. Camp is draining regardless, but honestly it all just depends on your personality, and what age group you’re most comfortable with. You cannot go wrong either way!!!! You could always try out both, and go from there. Good luck to you next summer!!! :-)

      Jay Williams idk you’ve heard from anyone, but it depends on the camp you work at 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ they need a really good reason to do so

      I only had one person get fired from my camp last year for having bad stuff in the staff cabin. So, you should be fine.

    Hey Ally, would you recommend accepting the first placement you receive ? i got an email from a camp that i am not particularly interested in as none of the activities are to my liking but i am worried that if i decline then i may not be placed again and will loose my acceptance fee?

    • @malvishah4979
      @malvishah4979 6 років тому

      truman rxbs this is my first year going to camp. I’m going through camp leaders, and the first placement I was given wasn’t anything like what I wanted! It was more of an ‘educational’ camp, but I wanted to go to more of a traditional camp. Camp leaders advised me to turn it down and not go to a camp where I won’t enjoy, but ofc made me aware of the very small possibility that I wouldn’t get another placement. I ended up turning the camp down, and got another placement from a camp which seems 1000000% more suited to me! Camp leaders works with so many camps, and they placed every single person last year, so I would maybe speak to whatever agency you went through and see what they recommend? Don’t settle, make sure you’re going to a camp which you know you will love and enjoy! Xxx

      Hi lovely! When you say the activities aren't to your liking, what do you mean? Is it a different style camp to what you were hoping for (traditional, religious, scout, special needs etc) or do they just not offer the activities you're hoping for? xx

    • @rubs7113
      @rubs7113 6 років тому

      Ally Sheehan yeah it was a different type of camp I was hoping for and different activities, ones that I wouldn’t be well suited to :( I still have an open mind and I really want to go I am just not sure if I would enjoy myself or not sure if I should take the risk of declining
