- In this video, I test and compare the Pop Voice Lavalier Mic to the Purple Panda Lapel Mic to see which one is the best cheap lapel mic! I test the microphones on both a Smartphone and include some Panasonic G85 Audio Tests with both microphones.

The purple Panda mic sounded like a condenser mic on the G85, and the PoP voice had the dynamic mic boom sound. I prefer the boomy sound of the PoP mic. Awesome Review!
I thought so too after using the Pop Voice mic more. With the strong preamps of the G85 it's a little hard to use without peaking. Still an awesome mic though!

I was considering the purple panda until I saw lots of negative reviews on the build quality and it not lasting or it stopped working after awhile. I now ordered a PowerDeWise but know it’s similar to the pop voice. I also had the Boya M1 which was great sound quality but the fixed 20 foot cable drove me nuts so I sold it.
idylle♡doll Hmm interesting about the build quality unless they changed it but after a couple years of use IRS never been a problem. Especially since all these private label brands use pretty much the same mic and casing.
I have been wanting to get started on UA-cam, so I’ve been looking at the Pop Voice. I think that as a beginner who is on UA-cam for fun, the Pop Voice is a good choice for me.
Ling’s Vida Honestly, you don’t need much more than a mic like this. It works fine for any application.
we underestimate cheap tech, but when its a pleasant surprise they are quality and affordable, its a win for everyone, except maybe the early adopters when things were still scarce and sold at a premium to just enthusiast grade consumers. I like this push to make everything creative one person accessible. I think the industry ridiculously associates things with multiple hundreds to thousand dollar prices because it was estimates from old pros who've been at this since the 60s and studios had to bankroll an entire new equipment setup and the pros got to source the products and report back to billing departments blowing their budgets intentionally for each new project.
Agreed!! There’s a lot of great quality budget friendly options out there right now. It greatly reduces the barrier to entry to get started vs going into debt for basic gear.

It is now $17 dollars, but I got it on one of the deals when it was still a $12 dollar mic, and I totally agree. I use it when recording VR content, and it's worth more than the price! I for one am happy with the purchase!

Funny I was up doing mic test on the mics that I have. Testing them for Film use. Audio Technica AT875r - Vidpro XM88 (not the 55) and a few others.

That's awesome! You'll love how crisp that Pop voice mic is. I would suggest an extension cable to give you some more reach on the cord like the purple panda mic has.
I use the Limostudios softbox lights have been using them for about two years straight and they still work like a charm. I love this set and did a video about them but if I'd say getthe set that is dimmable so you can control the brightness. ua-cam.com/video/I5a6SE8Baqw/v-deo.html

I'm so surprised that everyone says that microphone A and B sound the same. They sound way different to me and I liked A better. How can I tell if it'll be compatible with my voice recorder? I'm really not well versed in the technology department.
Years later now having a more trained ear and knowing more, the Pop voice lapel mic has a more dynamic pickup pattern and picks up less room noise and the Purple Panda mic is a condenser mic and tends to pick up a bit more environmental noise. Surprisingly both have held up well over the years so it's more of a preference of whichever mic you choose.
Voice recorders and cameras will always take a TRS cable (the one with two black bands on the end) and a smartphone or computer will always take a TRRS cable (the one with 3 black bands on the end). Both of these kits come with a TRRS cable and a TRS adapter. So if you add the adapter piece to change it to a TRS connecter (2 black bands) it should work with your standard audio recorders unless it specifies otherwise.
@@DianaGladney I've been seeing the term "condenser mic" everywhere and have no idea what it means! Also, thank you for explaining the TRS TRRS thing so clearly! I don't understand most of the explanations I find on UA-cam but understood yours perfectly :)
I too heard a significant difference between A vs B & C.
A sounded much better to me, while B & C sounded virtually identical, as if in a tunnel.

That's awesome! It's been a great little mic. I've found on my Panasonic cameras it's a much stronger sound. The Panasonic preamps are already really good though. I hope you enjoy the mic! :)

Thanks. I really could not tell the difference. in any of the mics.. I have one in my amazon cart ready to check out to use with a Tascam 5x to do my show with. I think this will be a great system for my audio parts. I wanted to get away from m,y computer and I think this will work. As far as the mics, after using both extensively I’ll say the Pop Voice Mic rejects surrounding or outside noise better and has a richer sound after trying different cameras with it than the Purple Panda mic. I love the extra accessories of the Purple Panda but you can’t really go wrong with either.
Microphones A and B sound the same. Microphone C is a bit better, but not by much. I already have a Pop, and I thought upgrading to a Boya could be worth it, but apparently not.
Yeah! I hardly ever use the Boya mic because I personally prefer the Pop Voice Mic. Since I did this video that's all I use.
I bought a gopro hero 7 black, a gopro mic adapter and a BOYA lavalier microphone 2 months ago (for my motorcycle helmet). Everything was working great.. then all of a sudden my videos didn't have audio...
come to learn that the BOYA mic is a TRSS, and the gopro requires TRS. Apparently the BOYA shouldn't have worked with my go pro at all, but it did.. the mic still works when I connect it to my phone btw.
When I plug a TRS mic in to the gopro I have audio.. so for some reason, out of no where.. my gorpo decided it doesnt want to work with my TRSS BOYA mic anymore..
Anyways... I ordered the Pop Voice mic "kit" based on your review :)

What about using these outside? Are either of them effective at blocking wind noise?
That’s a great question! Surprisingly yes! I’ve used them quite a bit outdoors even on windy days I thought it might be an issue and they both performed very well! The purple panda even comes with a furry wings screen if you’re in really difficult windy positions.

Well the Pop voice mic might be cheap but I've found it's quality to be up there with some of the more expensive brands I've had hands on with so it's no quality loss, that's for sure lol. Glad the video was helpful for you!

How do you guys speak in the same frame as you show B roll like you do in 5:53. Do you record externally and add it post edit? Im asking because I do a lot of cuts in my videos. It would take FOREVER to edit on my iphone
Great question! I outline my videos of what bullet points or tests I want to share in the video and write what b roll examples I need to film to better show what I'm explaining. I record this before I even shoot the video. That way when I edit I can just add it in over the parts relevant to the video based on my outline.

Your voice is clean no hum background noise, did u plugged the mic straight to your camera or through a mixer? I had tried to record a video connecting a pop voice to the camera and the hum Ouse was there, tried with camera mic and still the same issue. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks
Nope, no need to use a mixer or audio interface, this is straight from the microphone into the camera. If you're using a DSLR, especially something like the Canon DSLRs they have terrible audio preamps and are constantly having a hiss when you're plugged directly into the camera. If you have a DSLR, then you will want to route the audio through some other device or record separately to avoid any audio issues. If you have a mirrorless camera, you'll just want to make sure you're not having any background noise or the furnace on that's being picked up in your recording as best you can.

I’ve never personally worked with them but for anyone that tells you to go to Amazon and pay first and leave a written review and they’ll refund you via PayPal, don’t do it. It’s against Amazon’s Affiliate Agreement and is they kick you out for that it’s no getting back in, it’s not worth it.
However, if it’s from the company’s branded email, not some Gmail email address then its probably fine. Just spears know what you are or are not agreeing to do for receiving and reviewing free products. Make sure you still can provide a true and unbiased review.

I loved your review and I ended up purchasing the Pop Voice Mic, but I’ve noticed I can hear a static or almost like a fan sound in the background when I try to record ASMR videos. Any idea on how I can fix that? I do use my iPhone X to record. You’re awesome!

When it comes to audio it could be a few different things. I'd have to hear it to better guess what it could be. You can Send me an example clip via Instagram or upload a video sample to YT and I'll listen to it.
I'd make sure your furnace isn't on an your somewhat super quiet. Try recording in your closet right I the middle of your clothes and see if you still hear it. Sounds funny lol but the clothes will absorb any external noises pretty well.
By the way I like the fact that the other microphone comes with all the accessories and long extension cable which I will probably need so thanks again for this beautiful video
My pleasure!! ☺️! At the time the pop voice was the best value for sure just because of the accessories but after this video I starting use the Pop voice microphone and eventually picked up a better audio kit but as long as the accessories are more of what you need, it's all good!

The only difference is really the accessories and cable length. All still have the same mic capsule so I haven’t tested them but I’d bet they’re all virtually the same microphone.

one thing I am wondering since I want to record my voice while riding bicycle... do you think the product can reduce the wind sound to some extent?
I think you definitely could, but the two mics work slightly differently. The Pop Voice Mic is the better of the two when it comes to canceling out noise, but the Purple Panda mic comes with a little mini dead cat that fits over the mic to block any additional wind out. I'd probably go with the Pop Voice mic and get a furry windmuff off amazon and see how well it blocks out the wind noise while riding. Hope that helps!

Hi Diana! I'm finally researching this Pop Voice microphone you told me about at GWVL.... Microphone B sounded a tiny bit louder and a bit crisper... but they all sounded great. I'm curious is the Boya By M1 Mic you used in the rest of the video? It sounded great too.
Hey Lori! I do like them all but it is a matter of preference between the 3. I like having both the Pop Voice and the Purple Panda. I’ve found the Pop Voice rejects noises a bit better and is my go to mic. The only thing I don’t like about the Boya is the size. It’s super long and the mic piece is a fair size larger. But they’re all pretty good. Go with what you enjoy the most 😊

Can you connect the Pop microphone to a camera ?
If you use the adapter they provide you in the package that has 2 black bands on it, with that attached you can. Otherwise, the piece on the mic end with 3 black bands works with computers or phones.

I realize this is a older video but I was researching for a lavalier mic and ran across your video. I'm really surprised on the PoP Mic. Through my laptop speakers you could really hear a difference. Then plugged in my ear buds, the sound was a little more similiar then. I'm using AKG ear buds that came with my Galaxy phone now but really would like something a little deeper and richer sounding.
I actually have some new labels alongside these and plan to test them out. I’m curious how they all will doing in comparison to each other.

I went ahead and ordered the PoP voice Professional Lavalier Lapel Microphone off Amazon. Sure hope it works out. I've started experiencing with setting up my camera and talking while fishing on my channel. I used my ear buds the last couple of times but in my last video I noticed the one end was dangling out from under my shirt in a not so good place...lol Seriously though, I think the lapel mic will work out better. I’ve just been plugging it in to my phone and using the voice recorder app on the phone. I do have a Rode micro-mini but I don't plan to always be standing right in front of the camera (within voice range). I really appreciate your thoughts and opinions on this little mic.
Lol I didn’t mean labels but lapels lol
But the pop voice will work just fine! You could use your Rode mice but at that point you’re looking to bring the microphone closer if the camera is further away in order to have clear audio.

what phones does it work with? i'm finding mixed comments on samsung galaxy phones. just need to confirm that it works with S8
93atab I haven't tested specific phones but most times when people get a lapel Mic they don't check that it work's with phones vs just cameras. Both will work with smartphones since they have three rings on the plug. You only use the adapter that comes with it, that has two rings on the end, when you need to connect it to a camera or something. That's what makes a difference if it'll work with a specific type of device or not. Hope that helps!

Wahab kishky I actually do not have a video on that unfortunately. I usually keep my audio setup for videos pretty simple and make minor adjustments when editing. I try to get it as good as I can in camera so I don’t have to do much with it in editing.

Yeah, I later learned it was a dynamic style lapel so it blocks background noise better and is much louder. It’s a great mic, I still enjoy using it.

A and B sound almost identical to each other and microphone C did not sound as good
I agree. I plan to retest these and see how the sound improves since my office acoustics are better more now. The Pop voice mic really cancels out noise better than the others.
Mic A sounded the best, by far.
Good morning and thank you for this absolutely amazing video I love you. My project is to sing on Facebook live and promote my music and what I’m doing is connecting my mixer directly into my phone to capture all the effects reverb and echoes. And I think this pop voice Mike will help me a great deal instead of having a make up my face can you tell me if that’s a good idea for Facebook live event or even live events once all the pandemic crap goes away thank you.
If you need a handsfree setup a lapel can be great but sometimes a podcast type microphone can give better audio quality. It just depends though honestly. Different microphone styles serve different use cases. Any would still be useful post Rona lol.

Hmm I'm sorry you to hear that! Make sure you have the right adapter connected. If it's a phone, plug it directly in with no additional adapters. If it's a camera you're connecting to, use the adapter that has the plug with 2 black rings on the end.
@@DianaGladney I'm using it for my camera, the canon rebel t5i and I'm using the right adapters but still, nothing. This video was super helpful though! Everyone else seems to love it so maybe I just got a bad one. 😕
@@RachelReviewsEverything Dag that sucks! The T5i was my first camera so I know good audio is important. I would test the mic on a phone and see if it works. It could be a defective model though. Hope it gets sorted out!

Mr Davetop Yep, in the first Audio test just to have something like a bit of a ”control” audio source and just see how much of a difference it makes audio wise.

Mr Davetop Honestly no I don’t. Oftentimes you can get better quality using the built in microphone and there are even $7 lapel microphones that can better reject noise and give you cleaner audio. It’s extremely easy to get handling noise on earbuds or wind noise if outdoors and can make the worse. You don’t need a lot of money but you should invest what you can and get something.

A & B didn't sound anything alike. Problem is probably your test method. You can't talk the same twice. Should have had a friend with the same model phone as you record mic A and your phone record mic B, with one mic mounted as you have in this video and the other mounted on the opposite side but identical placement and distance from your mouth. Then record at same time.
Well this isn't a scientific test, most people will clip it on their shirt and go and probably in an untreated room. So, it's up to you which you prefer or buy both and make your own decision but I don't think some reviews require a ton of testing. It is at the end of the day a cheap microphone. Appreciate the comment though!

Yeah, not a ton of difference. I've found the Pop voice rejects background noises better though since I originally did this video.
