(this isn't self praise i swear) dunno! i grew up listening to a lot of green day, tre spams hertas non stop, they were the first rudiment i learnt, they feel super natural and groovy. i can totally imagine other self taughts discovering them by drumming to other musicians too.
I'm so glad to have found this video!!! Love this song and especially love the drums!!! Dave makes it look easy but I'm shocked how hard it actually is! I'm making this the first song I'm going to learn so I'm so grateful to have to excellent tutorial to learn from. I don't think I could learn it any other way. I love the structure of your videos. Great job!
Honestly dude you are just a hero! Thanks so much for these. No frills, no fuss, just well presented notation and different tempo demonstrations. Would LOVE to see you do some Deaf Havana. They aren’t that popular, but I love them so much and the drums are awesome. There are no tutorials out there and I suck at working them out by ear.
@@sifugurusensei those hertas are my new nemesis! I couldn't bring them up to speed if my life depended on it😬 I actually replaced them with some triplets..it's not the same but it's the best i can do for now. Best of luck to you!
@@sifugurusensei i just tried something..instead of using singles i tried to use doubles..i'm not at the tempo of the song yet, but it seems to be a little easier. Maybe this will help :D good luck!
This is probably my favourite Queens of the Stone Age song, it's just so epic. I'd love to see you take a look at QOTSA - Little Sister or Sick Sick Sick as well, the drums in those songs are awesome
On the section that starts at 0:58 the second snare hit on the 2nd bar (4th and 6th bars too) is placed on the second 8th note of the 3rd pulse. Wouldn't it be more acurate to say that it's actually placed on the 3rd note of a 8th note triplet of that 3rd pulse? Same happens with the very last hit on the fill in this same section. Sorry if my english is messy, it's not my first language.
I write it straight because it’s easier to read, but you are correct! It swings and so every “and” of the beat is actually the last triplet of that beat.
Great lesson but in the groove after the triplet fills in the chorus section has a little mistake, the kick pattern is also in triplets, you should place de kick in the first and third triplets on beats 1 and 3, otherwise it would sound completely different. Besides that, is a great lesson...loved how you explained the fills, pretty easy to understand!
i will never be able to play the herta fill in the chorus, i can play it - but it is so sloppy and i dont think ill ever be able to do it cleanly - its just such an odd fill and something you never really use anywhere else!
Emmanuelle Caplette has a great video on building up your hertas. If you practice them up you will definitely start using them in other fills because they sound so cool! ua-cam.com/video/F8UgoYXncjo/v-deo.html
Stranger, you have no idea how much this single comment has impacted my life. It has introduced me to a whole new world of music and I am forever grateful. Thanks for this.
Awesome video! Your kit sounds great. I was wondering if you have somewhere that shows your kit information. Specifically I was wondering which Evans heads you use,and cymbals.
I have Evans Coated G2s and I think a Genera on the snare. Cymbals are all Sabian: 14” Hand Hammered Dark Hats, 16” HHX Evolution crash, 16” AAX Dark Crash and 21” HHX Groove Ride
quality free tutorial for everyone as usual. im super hyped because this song has always stumped me
instablaster...
It's hard to imagine Grohl learned to drum by himself. I mean that herta rudiment is not easy to figure out from just listening to other musician.
Lmao I literally came here, (as a self taught drummer) just to figure that one part out 🤣
Dude, I came for the fills in the chorus, but the entire song is so firkin good.

Great dude ! the fast fill in the middle of the chorus was still a mistery for me... ! now it's not anymore :) thanks !

Excellent tutorial! You’re one of the best drum teachers on UA-cam!
As a novice, this is gonna take me weeks but looks like I'll learn so much more in the process of learning this song so it's worth it
Hey! I'm just starting to learn this song and I was curious how it went for you, me being a novice also :D
@@victormihaita5937 how did it go for you? That herta is a bitch. I'm not a beginner but I'm self taught. I need a teacher really.

Neil Peart from Rush did them a lot. Funny thing is Dave Grohl is a huge Neil Peart fan, so he probably picked it up from him.

To do the drum fill in 5:19 fast you use double stroke?
Nope, singles - RLR L RLR L RLR L RLR L
That pattern is also called Hertas so I’m sure you could find tutorials on how to play them fast.
Hey sorry to be a noob lol.
But is the sticking at 4:40 all singles?
Yep! RLRL, two quick ones two spaced out ones. If you look up Hertas too there’s a bunch of marching drum stuff about them.
