    THANK YOU ADAM. Stop Idolizing Artist's life, stop making an artist's life a reason for his work. Most of the time it was their job, that's all.....
    Bach made hundreds of musical pieces because it was his job. His everyday job. Like anyone else.
    And Beethoven started having deafness later in his life, but he didn't care because he knew musical theory and didn't need to hear the music, just to see it on a piece of paper was enough.
    Most artists had a simple boring life, and their works of art should be much more celebrated than their life because both of them doesn't have much links together.

    Literally, like, every actual artist already knows this.
    Art is a skill, and like all skills the way you get it and refine it is by replicating the techniques already done by more skilled past masters of the craft. This is more commonly known as "practising".
    Back in the day, when canvas, paint, and especially stone was pricey to say the least the only way to get your hand on these materials was to sell reproductions. Copies. Which was necessary, because back in the day there was no such thing as mass production of art. If you wanted a nice painting, you had to get a copy made.
    This benefited EVERYONE. The original artist received free publicly without needing to render the same work over and over again. The consumer who got a copy of a piece they wanted, and the "copy-cat" artist who received money and materials they needed to refine their craft.
    Even now, the best ways to grow as an artist is to copy the techniques and sometimes even the art itself of past masters. This is called studying the "fundamentals".

      i disagree. i gain nothing from practicing others material. I've mastered my own techniques, making new things. and people love them more than i do myself. making copies isn't my way of an artist, and it has never benefited me. i understand why most need these practices, but i just don't learn that way.

      @tensugarcubes 7 років тому +169

      Lol Phan Except you probably have without even knowing it. Copies dont have to be straight up copying, looking at any work and deciding to emulate parts you like? That's basically copying. It's not something to be ashamed of, any artist, from beginner to teacher/professional knows about master studies. It's actually ridiculous to assume that in a world so full of art you have never emulated or thought to learn via master studies.

    • @argophontes

    • @thatguywithanumbrella
      @thatguywithanumbrella 7 років тому +19

      i wouldn't call that copying though. most of my art would seem like i copied but really my imagination was just going to the same place as someone I've never seen or heard of before. it's original in thought, just similar in reality. i didn't say anything about copying being bad, i'm not ashamed of my art looking like others. i just l don't like it when i'm forced to draw things directly related to something else without making the journey towards that inspiration. i don't want to be told what to make, i want to find that for myself. if it ends up being similar to someone else's work, then that's a coincidence, not copying. just two people having the same idea, that the both of them came up with through their own journeys.

    I find it funny when people get really worked up about Adam "ruining things" because it doesn't really change things like art at all, he's either teaching us about problems we need to fix or pointing out misconceptions, not with the goal of hating on them, but just spreading knowledge. The fact that some great artists started out as forgers doesn't change the fact that they are good artists.

      I think there are a few reasons "people get really worked up about Adam "ruining things."" While the show, unlike other educational shows, cites their sources, whereas the other educational shows just expect you to believe them, some of the sources aren't really reliable sources. For example, the show cites ProPublica a lot, which not only isn't the most reliable source but also has a slightly left-leaning bias. Also, the show Adam Ruins Everything has a largely left-leaning bias, as there are many episodes focused on controversial political topics and I believe in all of them the show supports the left-leaning side of the debate, so Republicans/Conservatives generally get more worked up about the show than Democrats/Liberals. There is a Reddit post that shows this bias Here is a link to the post: www.reddit.com/r/adamruinseverything/comments/7agcht/adam_ruins_everything_is_politically_biased_to/
      Also, I know there is going to be some joker out there that will reply to this comment by saying something like "Well reality has a liberal bias."

      While it may be true that some arts can be duplicated, perspectives are original. While someone can draw the Eiffel Tower from the ground to show how high it is, another can draw the Eiffel Tower from far away, capturing the landscape, people, scenery and the time of day along with it.
      Are they the same? Yes, they are both drawings of the Eiffel Tower
      But not exactly copies. Their perspectives on their art is vastly different. One Artist focuses on the size of the Eiffel Tower while the other artist saw where the Tower was placed.

      yeah, its worth trying to copy what other people do, learn new skills and techniques that can be applied. I learned by first copying cartoon styles, and then applying those techniques on other artworks and drawings. So long as you claim it as practice (or at least a disclaimer of where it was originally from) its fine - its when you try profiting off of it, or attempting to claim it as an original idea when it definitely wasn't, that's a definite problem.

    *Yes! This is so important for raising artists to hear!* Don't get discouraged by naysayers; keep practicing; if you see something you like, copying the style is not theft or being unoriginal, it's being inspired - you will grow as an artist and when you mature you will have blossomed with your own style and vision

    • @vfaulkon
      @vfaulkon 5 років тому

      Yep yep! Same with writing - if you want to become a better writer, you need to write! If you're worried about how to write well, read some of the classic authors, both of antiquity and the modern era, and let that inform you. Obviously you can't get away with simply copying Hemingway or Plath or the like verbatim, but you can see how certain parts strike you as evocative of something and try that technique yourself until it clicks for you.
      Oh, and don't let haters of fan-fiction get you down either. You wanna write fanfics, go for it! As long as you're trying to write more effectively and use the experience as practice, you'll learn from it regardless of the subject matter. And who knows? One day, hopefully with some more practice under your belt, you'll have a genuinely good original idea you want to put out there, and thanks to all the practice you'll be better able to express it.

    This is true, but also one of the first thing that we learn as an artist and a designer. It's impossible to do anything original at this point. It's all about finding inspirations, practice it a thousand time, and from that foundation, you see what kind of improvements and twists you can add.

    Thankfully we already know this, I mean, us in the actual artistic community in any sense of the word at least. It’s nothing really to be ashamed of. After all, copying those who we believe to be greater than ourselves is the natural stepping stone towards achieving our own goals. With almost literally every idea already having been conceived now, we basically have to go through only a small pinch of that now to try and find what we might be wanting to do, and try and strive to reach something anywhere near that level of quality.

    Even as someone who's only gone through the first semester of Appreciation of Art, this is obvious. Not only is copying the way that you learn a lot of the practical artistic skills, but most of the great artistic movements are either a celebration of the past or blatant rejection of it. In other words, if there's a great artist whose work you admire, they were probably either trying to make their work feel like a previous era's style or using their knowledge of that previous era to defy that style while still making an aesthetically pleasing piece.

    I copy all the time. Like I'm not good enough to think of the perfect base to draw. Would look always so much inferior. So I just copy directly a whole picture or take it as reference but draw another character. Or sometimes I look on many other pieces at the same time. Look how better artists handle specific situations and get everything together in my work.
    Much more motivating and way better to learn. If I would limit always to only specific reference photos I would need an eternity to even find one that shows human body like i want to draw it.
