Epigenetic Aging: How old is your DNA?

  • Dr. Steve Horvath, a professor of genetics and biostatistics at UCLA, has found a way to measure biological aging - a type of "clock" - based on the methylation pattern of an organism's genome. Methylations are biochemical processes that modify the activity of a DNA segment without changing its sequence - a type of epigenetic change. This video primer explains the basics of epigenetic clocks, the topic of our interview with Dr. Steve Horvath, coming soon!

Hi there, I am interested in genetics. It's really difficult. Where, Scientific work is surely going to drastically age people. Even in finding out about D.N.A. it kind of wastes, so much time.
It's very difficult, to communicate about these issues with the general public.
I can see people learning about this type of information but by observing their actions. I am really not seeing them understanding this issue.

In my estimation Drs. Rhonda Patrick and Valter Longo are absolute leaders in the field in presenting emerging scientific research in terms understandable by anyone.

Dear Ken over 96% human lifestyle decisions are based on emotions or what makes them feel good or avoid feeling lousy. Information is the LAST thing that impacts human lifestyle choice. So, presenting information to humans is largely wasted effort. Hounds of brilliant scholars like Dr. Patrick and Dr. James Hansen of NASA have gone hoarse trying to make public listen to science but all human chase after is short term dopamine highs not long-term outcomes. People refuse to tolerate the discomfort of a face mask while risking long term disability from COVID19. In short humans are scientifically stupid or decision ally dumb. Despite all the research and lecturing on longevity and turning back the clock the lifespan has shrunk in the US for the past 3 years in a row and that is about to speed up with COVID19. The best use humans would derive out of the research on epigenetics is to speed up the aging clock by drinking more etc. The sales of alcohol have gone up about 20% in the pandemic as there has been a drop in the physical activity by a similar volume. My anti-aging research work tells me that aging would remain incurable because humans are effectively a stupid species an stupidity is incurable. I have offered thousands to comply with my sleep and stress combatting strategies thus far zero takers. Humans dont really want to live longer unless they can get it in a pill like MNM.

Cold conditioning is a great alterative to sauna and triggers the same heat shock proteins. Bathe for 3-5 minutes twice daily in ice cold water at 5-6°C. Start with 30 secs and may use 9°C water and gradually build it up from there. I can now go for 5 minutes at 5°C water twice daily on most days. Sure, wakes you up. Sauna can be mixed with the cold therapy. Some people can do 10 minutes of cold exposure but benefits beyond 4 minutes are not great. Dr. Sinclair calls it cryotherapy that is used to burn warts no for cold conditioning. I grew up in a very cold part of India and my system can take extreme cold well. Older adults exposed to cold while shovelling snow have had heart attacks so it is a risky thing.

Apart from methylation of histone proteins, 8 of which form the basis of chromosone packaging when the double helix of DNA wraps around themj, histone modification also takes place at different locations on different amino acids in the form of phosphorylation, acetylation, ubiquitylation and sumoylation. By no means is methylation the only game in town.

The work Dr. Horvath is talking about is still ultimately an investigational tool in his lab. But, there's been some attempts at commercialization for the *chronological* part. Check out myDnaAge.com (no affiliation).

You hit it out of the park Rhonda. I was wondering on a loosely related note: do you think I could get away with a mustard seed capsule taken right after my broccoli sprouts or does it need to be blended into the smoothie? I want to take my sulforaphane optimally, but I’m having a lot of trouble getting down that spicy taste.

What are your thoughts on David Sinclairs work on OSK-induced epigenetic reprogramming? It sounds like a pretty unique way to achieve the desired methylation patterns, and strengthens the the case for a correlation between epigenetic age and biological age. Thanks for posting more epigenetic content!

I did my genetic makeup test with ancestry. Would I be able to use this data with the grim clock to find out my epigenetic age?

Yes, I do think the sauna is changing your epigenome! Thanks for the awesome video. I look forward to the interview with Dr. Horvath!

That bit in the sauna at the end made me lol. Great stuff! I hope the sauna is working to positively change your epigenome.

Rhonda, i don't if you upped your skin-care game or actually reduced your biological age but you look soo healthy and fresh in this video which makes me produce lots of serotonin alongside the trajectory that aging research and awareness is gaining! Maybe 2020 isn't so bad! 😁

    Hello Rhonda,
What type of sauna would you recommend to install at home? Infrared or regular? Thank you.

Cardioprotedtive effects of thermal conditioning have been reported only in a Japanese study with infra red sauna. Regular sauna might not be cardioprotective but might help otherwise.

Took two tests! DNAge said I was 65 and Elysium's Index said I was 49. That is a 16 years spread. Which test is most reliable?

Great info, clearly explained..sharing ..I'm wondering if you've looked at ox DNA ie hydroxylation as also accelerating aging ...hence value of antioxidant rich whole foods ..I reccomend you look at cannabinoids as fat soluble membrane components which prevent oxidation and thus DNA damage ..might pitch the clock to cannabis industry looking at research ..thinking topicals on sundamged skin cropping SCC would be great patch to test prevention and treatment of senescence / advancing oncogenesis ...I'm glad my myotherapist Reccomended your channel ..

The study is so exciting, everybody talking down the IGF-1 pathway these days. Seems they don't see the effect Metformin has on the mTor and Ros, they don't even see the effect of HIt/HIIT, IF, sleep and such on mTOR and ROS (to inhabit them). We should not be so negative on the IGF-1 pathway, as long as you see the overall picture.
