It has given me some faith thats for sure. I am a music teacher and professional musician, I have suffered with chronic tinnitus for over a year (with no hearing loss) and have no idea what to do. I have seen audiologists, ents and they just say to meditate but I'm really not interested in that. Music is my form of relaxation (at least it was) but I'm super confused. Pete is right, us guitarists in order to "feel" what we are doing need to be at a louder volume- there is just no comparison. However I personally have to use plugs constantly, when im teaching and when im playing due to crippling hyperacusis. I get pain constantly. Any way you could help me Ben? I'm in Australia but interested in doing a telehealth call

I think I learnt not to stress too much about one night of loudness. I had rehearsal last night with my band and I wore my custom plugs, it sounded louder sometimes I’m still getting used to them.
My ears are hissing a lot today but I’m putting that down to little sleep, the one year old isn’t very good at sleeping through yet 🥱

Being a farmer and working round loud Farm Machinery I have never really developed tinnitus but my brother suffers from it really bad and he always seems to try and protect his ears from any sort of noise where I consider being normal . I think the hearing does need reasonably loud noise and overprotection can be a bad thing could be wrong that's my opinion .👍👍

Dr Ben, thanks for talking about this. I'm a huge Who Fan (The Who at Boulder's Folsom Stadium was probably my first really loud show, in the 80s). I've also experienced the ebbs and flows with my Tinnitus. Just knowing that things change can provide a lot of hope and help to manage Tinnitus. Add that information to the tools I've found from Treble Health and you've got a toolkit to manage Tinnitus! Thanks for all you do.

Good video, but I disagree that "Being around loud noise will not make your tinnitus worse". Permanently louder tinnitus is *ABSOLUTELY* a risk when around loud noise. Having tinnitus and not protecting yourself is a speedrun to getting much worse tinnitus, the vast majority of the time. I guarantee for every pete townsend there's ten other musicians who have not recovered.
Sure, if you fucked up it doesn't mean you're definitely stuck that way, but that doesn't give you a free pass to fuck up as much as you want and not expect anything bad to happen. If you want to survive with tinnitus, you've gotta balance your optimism with safety and cold hard facts.

That really settled my curiosity on how Pete dealt with it. I've suffered for 28 years now since 17. It'd be nice to see him get involved with a tinnitus charity.
LOVE The Who too. Mine was caused by headphones listening to rock music and maybe gigs.

Aye, I am a Musician have been since 1973...the things you mention here I have experienced too but here is what I think might be why I have Tinnitus in my left ear, more than my right. I am also a professional Automobile Parts Specialist for as long as I have been a Musician, maybe longer...I have always answered the phone with my left ear. This is where the electrical noise which appears in my head comes from. Sometimes it deminishes but I can say it is most always there. Perhaps its tme for me to start using my right ear and give my left a break? Thanks Pete, one of my guitar hero's and Dr. for the connection I didn't understand before...makes all the good since in the world.

Great video, Ben. Nice to hear that there is some promising news regarding diminishing tinnitus. So did his tinnitus just go away or did he just become accustomed to it?
I've been dealing with mine since a Brit Floyd concert at Red Rocks on June 9th this year. (I'm certainly NOT blaming "Brit Floyd" for my tinnitus. The concert was AWESOME).
I had an audiogram last Tuesday. As I feared, I have some high frequency lose (between 4 and 8 KHz) in my left ear. It's not bad, just below the threshold, but it's my left ear that has the most tinnitus. My left ear is also very sensitive to noise as well. Clanging dishes, keys jingling etc.
My right ear is good. Just above the lose threshold at the upper frequencies.
I wish I had known about "musicians earplugs" before the concert. They can drop sound levels down be up to 20 dB, but you can still have a conversation and hear the details of the music.
If only I could turn back the clock....

I learned that my tinnitus developed for no reason at all. No exposure to loud sound, no drug use, good diet. It just came on one day in May 2021 and has grown worse gradually. It stopped for 2 months after I had sinus surgery last May but then it started coming back even worse. It could be ENT related but several ENTs have failed to see anything wrong.

Interesting hearing about Townsends progress. It gives me some hope. I recently injured my left ear recording vocals and acoustic guitar using headphones. While my tinnitus has dropped in severity from a 7-8 (severe) to a 4-5 (moderate to mild) in the past couple months. I’m still weary about singing live. I could play live just playing guitar now if I had my -25 ear filter in. Problem is singing live. When you sing, you create vibrations and resonance in your head which can aggravate the tinnitus. If you project trying to hit high notes, you can easily sing at levels peaking over 90 DB. If you sing with earplugs in then your subject to the occlusion effect, low frequencies unable to exit via the ear canal- further damaging your hearing. As Pete sings lead frequently and does a ton of harmony singing, I’m not sure how he doesn’t aggravate his tinnitus?

I do not know if you are still involved in this or not, but I am a musician with tinnitus. At this point I would still still describe as mild, and my ent recommended hearing aids. I tried them , and they had no impact at all, and they did not help with the tinnitus. I guess I could try a different hearing aid, and I am wondering if there is anything different about the in ear monitors or hearing aids that Pete Townshend used? I also never really played music that was a s loud as Pete Townshend did. However there are other hazards such as wearing headphones and plugging into a system that was accidently set too loud, and I mention that because there was an incident were that happened to me several days before my tinnitus set in. Right now, I am still not too bad but I am concerned about my hearing, and what could happen in the future.

There's a video on YT of Townshend as a guest on Letterman who say's he has it also. Townshend say's he doesn't have it badly & that he took new age medicine, homeopathy recommended by a doctor. The rest he talks about the past of how it started.
You are speculating by saying Townshend's tinnitus was very bad & loud. He never made that claim & we don't know if it was in one ear or both.
I also am surprised that you say... being around loud noise won't make your tinnitus worse. Yes it can & some who have had MRI's have said there tinnitus didn't return to baseline. Loud noise can cause structural neurological change for example synaptopathy beside outer/inner hair cell damage. So yes it can make your tinnitus much worse without causing much hearing loss except in higher frequency ranges.

    A CAUTIONARY TALE
I've had tinnitus for about 12 years. I used hearing aids that generate a tone, which "scrambles" my brain so that I don't hear the buzzing sound anywhere near as loud as I used to. I keep that sound on for a few weeks, then just the hearing aids as aids, until the buzzing returns (it always does). I use earplugs on stage, sometimes two , often just one. Unlike Mr. Townshend, we don't have our own soundman for every show, nor do we even know what kind of PA will be on site, so in ear monitors aren't feasible. I tried bringing some on tour, and there just wasn't time to fuss with it on top of everything else.
    However, HERE IS A WARNING.
This past Sunday, we participated in a local competition to go to the International Blues Competition, representing our local blues society. After our 25 minute set, where I did NOT use earplugs and wasn't wearing my hearing aids (because it was loud enough), I noticed I was having trouble hearing people speaking. Our stage volume wasn't too loud, although the keyboards seemed a bit loud to me. At any rate, I chalked it up to ambient noise and too much beer.
After going home and to bed, I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed I couldn't really hear out of my left ear. Monday confirmed it - I couldn't hear my fingers snap in my left ear, although I could in my right. Tuesday I went to the ENT, and found I'm now basically deaf in my left ear.
It has gotten very slightly better over the last few days (it's now Friday), but it's like a 10 band equalizer set with only the lowest bass band on zero, the two highest on zero, and everything else at minus 12. I'm on Prednisone on the off hand chance that there is inflammation causing it and that will reduce it. My ear drum works correctly, as they did extensive testing. The ENT said there is no explanation for this, it just happens sometimes, often at loud concerts or after injury. I can only hope my hearing will return to more or less where it was, with the typical noise induced hearing loss notch between 2k and 6k.
The point is, ALWAYS wear protection. Don't assume just once is ok without it. If I could redo Sunday, you know I would have worn earplugs the whole time. But for now, all I can do is regret that I didn't.

As a 44 year old former live sound engineer, huge music lover and electric guitar adept I am suffering from tinnitus for over 20 years. My hearingdamage is partially due to genetically issues, my granddad, dad and both my brothers have hearingdamage/suffering hearingloss. But practicing/playing guitar in front of loud amps, drummers who like to beat the sh*'t out of their cymbals and listening to loud music both professionally and for the love of it has also contributed to my hearingdamage, ultimately hearingloss and tinnitus. I use hearing aids since four years and I think I can manage my tinnitus much better. Although I also learned that playing guitar with hearing aids destroys the dynamic range of an electric guitar's signalchain. Nothing sounds better than the direct sound of an air moving speaker on my eardrums. I learned from early on to embrace my tinnitus and hearing aids helps me deal with it. It's like it becomes less. But the natural dynamics of the ear cannot be reproduced by an electronic device such as a hearing aid. At least, not yet.
Yes, Pete Townshend has always been one of my favorite guitarplayers! 😃

It's possible that exposure to loud concerts can contribute to tinnitus, especially if the volume levels were high and protective measures like earplugs weren't used. Noise-induced hearing damage can have long-term effects, and it's important to be mindful of noise exposure to protect your hearing health.
