Since the release of this video we now have a little tidbit from Reggie's book that apparently he had to convince Miyamoto to get Wii Sports bundled with the Wii in the west, because Miyamoto was saying something like "We do not give away our software" to which Reggie pointed out previous pack-in titles. So that was… something. Apparently Miyamoto just never liked pack-ins and thought it devalues their work, and that's why after the first few consoles they just stopped.
I feel like they would have been better to include a bundled game but charge for it. Then it becomes curation because they're telling you, "and THIS game is your best intro to the console." Given the amount of shovelware that plagued the likes of the GBA and Wii, it would always have been better to give people buying a console for a kid at Christmas something decent in the box so they'd feel they were getting value for money, rather than leaving them to pick whatever piece of licensed crap they recognised because their kid loved the toy/cartoon. Maybe that's less of an issue now that the average parent grew up playing games ad knows the good franchises, but then again, I'm just now getting into Playstation and knowing what's good has felt like starting from scratch, as a longtime Nintendo fan...
Which is funny considering some of the bigger Nintendo franchises that aren't represented in Nintendo Land at all. Kirby, Pokémon, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Wario, Punch Out... Granted, for most of these I can see a reason for them not being included, but it's still pretty funny that such an obscure game was.
One thing not mentioned about that DS Metroid demo was the multiplayer. Only basic deathmatch on one map but it was something. The fact anyone with a DS had the same game made it perfect for a bit of shooter fun. My cousin and I were a few years older than Scott was when that thing came out and had a great time experiencing handheld multiplayer gaming for the first time.
9:00 I'd remove the Lone Ranger from the list, since the Zapper was optional there, but add Barker Bill's Trick Shooting, which did require the Zapper. Also, I remember watching somewhere that Nintendo only supported ROB long enough to get the NES into consumer's homes, then once they had the system, they'd have more incentive to buy additional games for it.
If you were 12 years old in 1990 and saw Mario world for the first time, I assure you; It was amazing and not an obvious next step as you sort of called it. You might not get it but things like, ride Yoshi , walk behind a fence , the boss sprite is bigger than a NES sprit . These were the flashiest things out there. And really were one of a kind at the time.

i LOVED nintendo land. my family got the deluxe set and i played it a bunch with my friends and family the unlocks were useless but i loved seeing the random nintendo stuff popping up in my park. the throwing star game made me sad tho
My Wii U also came with New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U...which def would've been a better choice for a "pack-in" game over Nintendoland. P.S. I still think that the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World that came with my SNES is still my favorite "pack-in," followed by Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet that came in my NES Power Set.
I don't think you can ever beat the SMB/Duck Hunt combo or Tetris. Sometimes a game would be such a huge hit that someone coming to the console cold would seek it out even if it wasn't included - e.g. I made sure to get Halo when I bought my original Xbox - but it's nice when it's just packed in already. I'd forgotten how graphically ambitious some GBA stuff was - it's a great handheld and there were a lot of good games alongside the cheap rubbish targeting kids, and it's easy to forget now that it was basically a SNES in your pocket, and then some.
@@AndresGreenboi Nintendo owns 1.75% of Namco, not enough to even consider it ownership when your the last in line of owning something. Like how having 1.75% of a cookie, you would say you had some, but not enough to consider it yours.
Nah, it makes perfect sense, the multiplayer games were really cool, whereas the single player ones were less about fun and more about being annoying (yoshi fruit, octopus dance?). The DK one was pretty fun though.
i honestly don't remember how i got my NES. thinking maybe one of my sisters left it to me when they moved out. i did have the Super Mario/Duck Hunt combo cart, but no zapper. so i couldn't even play 1 of the games i had. after that, i got a Robocop game that i never beat. but when SNES was the hot new system, surprisingly i got it with a Donkey Kong Country pack in. which immediately made me a fan, and i would go on to own the trilogy as each new game came out
A while back a leak came out detailing Everybody 1 2 Switch and it also said that all playtesters hated it and that it wasn't fun... Yeah I can see why Nintendo is not making a big fuss out of it
I have to say that Gyromite had the best music for a quick pick-me-up. I can't not be happy while listening to its stupid: doot-dit-doot-dit-doodadoo-dootdit. It's actually a bit of a problem now, because my wife takes it the wrong way because i need that music to get it up.
The Wii Mini launching with Mario Kart Wii made little sense. What game should we bundle with the version of the Wii that has no online support? How about the best online game for the Wii.
Later on, Nintendo added Nintendoland with the white Wii U and New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U (in addition to Nintendoland) with the black Wii U...this is the bundle I got.
Lol I have Nintendoland, likely got it around launch when I got the Wii U Premium edition. I've literally never even put it in my Wii U, may have to rethink that after seeing this! 😆
Honestly, though I think it was stupid to think people should pay full price for 1-2 Switch, Scott has a point. If putting it as a pack-in title meant I'd have to play that stupid sandwich-eating minigame with my family even once, then it wasn't worth it.
Nintendo should have sold Nintendo Land with both versions of the Wii U, only in the cheap one it should have been included as software that was already in the Wii U or as a download code. Aldo the standardalone version of the game should have been cheaper, like twenty dollars. 60 dollars for a mini game collection? In an era were 60 dollars was the price of a full triple A game?
There was a pac in with the nes original Nintendo I don’t think you mentioned, the power pad one. That was a big damn box … sweet! ua-cam.com/video/cjg5KpT6HAE/v-deo.html
Its funny that 1-2 switch was so shit you'd rather it was sold separately and not have it included with the Switch.. Its interesting that after the Wii U flopped hard they didnt include a game with the switch to up its value a bit.. I think 1-2 switch just wasnt deemed to be good enough to deserve the attention a pack in title gets - and Breath of the wild was to much game to give away for free.
Nintendoland was just an absolutely awful name which is fitting for a tie-in game with the WiiU. lol it just looked like shovelware garbage and the name and box art and description of the game didn't help. I have it but ive never even played it.

As a software engineer I can see why Miyamoto said so about giving away their work for free devaluing it, but Reggie was absolutely right here.

I don't know where else I'd say this, but I am surprised they even made a whole minigame based on The Mysterious Murasame Castle of all games.
Which is funny considering some of the bigger Nintendo franchises that aren't represented in Nintendo Land at all. Kirby, Pokémon, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Wario, Punch Out... I'm honestly glad they did. I had no idea what series the minigame was from when I played it but it was certainly fun as hell tbh
im gonna be honest with you im not surprised because it is nintendo after all not making sense is their game
It's funny how that game just randomly appears on games like Mario Maker or Smash
At least that game sort of justified the gamepad use; the octopus dance on the other hand......
