- We are four Jurassic Park sequels in with the release of Fallen Kingdom this month, but it seems as though each new installment of the beloved franchise is a total letdown. All sequels stumble except the very first, The Lost World. What did The Lost World get right that future sequels can't?

I just want to say that Roland Tembo isn't just the best character in Jurassic Park. He might be one of the best characters in all of fiction. Somebody who's willing to treat his enemies as human beings and not take their differences personally. We don't see nearly enough of this in media.
I like how he had an arc at the end.

Roland and Ludlow are the fleshed out characters that Mills and Wheatley were modeled after and failed to emulate.
Roland especially. He showed himself to be a brutish man...but not at all an evil man, not even greedy. He showed that he cared about Sara when she was tracking blood from the jacket (though I think he wanted it to be left around so that the scent would be picked up by the rexes, he seemed to ask if Sara was alright just to be sure she wasn’t the one injured. Didn’t hurt that she was dumb enough to not realize the blood would lead the rexes to him.)
He also would go out of his way to make sure Kelly wasn’t within earshot or wasn’t awake before he would talk about serious matters, not wanting to scare the lone child on an island with a bunch of incompetent adults with dinosaurs.
He loved the hunt, and he wanted to prove to himself that he was the greatest. No one else.
There was also a deleted scene where his friend Sanjay came to meet him at an outdoor bar before they went to Sorna. You could see the palpable friendship and love between them, and how starved for excitement they both were, especially together. They thought it’d go well and they’d be reminiscing in a retirement home one day.
Once Sanjay died, all that was a wash for Roland...confirming he cared more about connections and loved ones more than anything.
Few things: Ajay, not Sanjay. I got that wrong.
Also, Ajay finds him at the outside bar and tries to convince him to go, to which we immediately see Roland is not a monster when he says he doesn’t mind if “the animal wins” but they win too often to the point where he accused the two of them together of being a “firing squad.”
He then sees a local female waitress being groped by a table of men. He defends her and challenges the lead groper to a fight, tying his own hand behind his back, and hitting the guy so hard it broke the guy’s jaw.
He continues to show he’s not a monster when he keeps refusing Ajay’s proposal to another trip, because he already has one of everything mounted that he could’ve ever wanted to hunt. He’s not killing for the fun to kill.
It’s not until Ajay tells him it’s a dinosaur island that he’s even remotely interested.
100% agree. The Lost World is the only sequel that captures the same sense of adventure, survival, and terror as the original film. In some ways, I think it’s even better than Jurassic Park.

I started laughing out loud when I heard that line in this video 😂😂
In the scene onboard the SS Venture, there is a broken cage on deck, meaning that the T-Rex managed to break out of its cage and killed the crew, and the remaining crew desperately attempted to trap the Rex inside the cargo hold and succeeded. They did NOT put the Rex inside the cargo hold in the first place but it was placed on deck in a cage, but the break out forced them to trap the Rex inside the hold. To prove this, the last time we saw the Buck T-Rex before the San Diego incident was on the island inside a similar looking cage as the one on the ship. There is no doubt that both cages are the same.
As for the crew on the bridge, there was a storyboard which shows that a large hole teared through the bridge, thus explaining how the Rex was able to kill the bridge crew. However, this large hole was nowhere to be found in the film, which further caused confusion.
The question of how the crew that trapped the Rex in the hold died is something I do not know. Probably the guy laying dead with the switch was the last surviving crew member from the attack, got severly injured, and trapped the Rex in the hold before dying.
I think that some extra crew members led it down there and got completely torn to shreds.
Also don’t forget that the Bull was hopped up on Morphine and very Aggro at the time as well

Yeah, Roland technically is an "Antagonist" but not really.
He's a good person with not so good motivation. Granted it's just hunting, and he has the permission to hunt the T rex. So he didn't really do anything wrong.
Also if you include the Deleted Bar Fight scene, it shows that Roland has a good sence of Justice and is more then willing to put people in their place.
I didn't include the fight scene because it is a deleted scene so not technically part of the movie, but then watching it on tv recently I saw it was included. So it's a tossup.

He's more of what you'd call an anti-villian. Yea, shooting a live tyrannosaur seems like a pretty masculine and petty idea to turn into another trophy but he also has a good reputation among his friends and colleagues of the hunter group. All who which perished either by the chasing tyrannosaur parents or the raptor field, making him realize how fruitless the expedition was and what he lost in return compared to Ludlow's (the true antagonist) drive to profit off his dying uncle's remnants of a dream.
Controversial but lost world is my favourite of the series. Best score, best looking dinosaurs and locations. Only let down by the San Fran sequence

I’m pretty sure The Lost World is what nurtured my love of dinosaurs as a kid and is the movie that I watched the most out of all the Jurassic movies. It’s my childhood favourite movie of the series. Probably not my favourite in the series, but the one I loved as a kid.

Lost world is the ONLY decent sequel to Jurassic park. Ive been tell everyone that for years. Its not a perfect movie by any means but it feels like a natural continuation from the orginal. Glad your singing its praises and calling the other movies for what they are: cheap cash grabs.
JP3 is probably my favorite in the series it feels like a different movie other than the t rex scene
One of the reasons I like to point out the Lost World is better than the first film is that the dinosaurs behave even more realistically in my opinion. Herbivores in the Lost World aren't just eye candy, they're dangerous animals. The rexes aren't just bored and "want to hunt", they are caring parents protecting their young.
Not to mention the special effects in the Lost World look even better than the first! Plus the amount of new dinosaurs featured in the Lost World is a bonus because there were so many popular species they neglected to show us in the first film.
In my opinion just about the only thing the second film does worse than the miracle of science and the revelation that we could actually clone dinosaurs and bring them back from extinction... Which you know, it's a sequel so how could they possibly do that a second time? You just can't. There was no point trying for that.
Also when you get more scenes of the characters then when you see the dinosaurs you get so much more excited.
Great video essay, though I still think The Lost World kinda fell apart with the San Diego scene. Firstly, a dinosaur rampaging through an entire city is something you could make its entire own movie about, but here it's really rushed, secondly, the people stopped acting and feeling like real people. The random civilian's reactions that were played for laughs rather than make us empathize with them, the heroes just quipping and playing it cool rather than taking it seriously, and the businessman going from a somewhat nuanced man who still respected the danger the dinosaurs posed to becoming a greedy idiot who dies because he decided to go alone and unarmed into the Rex holding pen to catch the baby T-rex, just for the sake of making a hamfisted death scene. I think it would be a much better film and be given more credit for the great characters if the filmmakers had done the ending more consistently with the rest of the film and skipped the comedy in the ending.
I strongly disagree with this video and I really don’t think so but I definitely respect your opinion.

Finally! another Jurassic park fan who knows that the lost world is great, wonderful video man. Also another nice thing about the lost word is a satisfying conclusion to Hammond's character (sorry if you mentioned this and I missed it).
When I watched the lost world for the first time I didn't like it for some reason. But when I watching it again and again my likes for the movie is considerably increasing . I love the lost world more than any other sequel of Jurassic park besides the first one .
In general it feels like Hollywood has forgotten how to produce good movies.
But then came the new Dune movie and it gave me hope again.
They CAN make good movies. They just dont want to make em, because they are lazy and inpatient.

I loved Lost World. However, having read the books, the entire Jurassic Park franchise irritates me.

12:26 With everything this movie got wrong, you at least have to give props to them for proper firearms handling, good trigger discipline (finger off the trigger) and C-clamping their weapons, or they way they grip it at the front
My only complaint would be why only SCAR 16s? Your using these weapons to defend from literal dinosaurs, 5.56 isn't going to do a ton to hurt them lmao
I agree The Lost World is the best sequel to the original, I like it almost as much as the first. I don't even think JP 3 is that bad, I mean it's as simple of a story you can tell, but they're were some good sequences, and Spinosaurus was at least to me a cool new antagonist dinosaur, as were the Pteranodons. The Jurassic World movies do little for me, they're too overtly silly, and lack any real substance. The Indominos Rex is sort of interesting, but Spino to me was more memorable. Fallen Franchise, and Dumbminion, are as bottle of the JP barrel as you can get.
Jurassic World franchise in the words of Dr Ian Malcom: (with cgi and money) your developers were so preoccupied woth whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should!

This is a great video, but there’s one thing that I simply cannot agree with “animals […] don’t feel empathy.” (slight paraphrasing here but still…) Now I’m not saying that shit blue an Owen pull in dominion isn’t COMPLETE CINEMATIC HORSESHIT, but saying it like an non-hominid animal cannot feel ANY EMPATHY IN THE SLIGHTEST otherwise it’s a work of *fiction* is a disservice to dinosaurs, animals in general, and your point about the care that was put into the first two films into making these animals, animals, and not some movie monster(s) that do whatever the plot and/or film makers demanded for “dem box office numbers”
There are many real world examples of animals being capable of empathetic actions that are not “interspecies” (ie all partys involved in the empathetic interaction are the same species or “kind” of animal) cases, and there are even rare moments where carnivores helped animals that they would normally consider prey. (you know the reason why those situations are rare but they still happen regardless) and for an example of animals being capable of some capacity of empathy that is more relevant to the movies there are bonds between humans and dangerous predators that are similar to blue and Owen’s, and while both parties involved in these bonds do care about and enjoy each other’s presence, in the real world the person who has this connection with the animal still has to give it some respect and still can’t completely trust the animal to not attack them when they turn around because they are still *wild* animals that have an evolutionary advantageous instinct found in most predators that makes them take an attempt at an ambush at a vulnerable target that is so powerful that even the most determined of individuals can’t ignore the instinct *completely,* no matter how hard the individual in question trys to ignore it. The attempt at ignoring the instinct at least shows that they have something in them that allows them to care about wether or not the “funny looking thing” dies, but as shown even in humans “nothing beats instinct, no punishment or reward that is ether physical or nebulous (nebulous means: not physical and it includes mental related things in that definition as non physical) in its nature, can override an instinct” -someone talking about “perfect soliders” in a work of fiction that seem to ignore even the instincts of self preservation and the innate fear of being harmed.
All of that was to say, god dam was Owen and “his” raptors relationship between each other a wasted opportunity because instead of “How the bond between blue and Owen still stands after both were separated then reunited by circumstance as both struggle to trust each other again then later when blue excapes that containment at the resident evil level and stumbles upon Owen in a situation where he’s in danger because of a random thug with a weapon, even though she’s in scared animal mode (established by maybe some senes of her attacking random people and even some of the other main characters) something in blue tells her to attack the thug instead of Owen (insert good death scene here) afterwards showing some reluctance in attacking Owen imedeltly but still being heavily on edge as another ‘Owen calms down a fucking raptor by acting submissive’ scene plays out then the plot devic- indoraptor shows up and the ‘Jurassic world like finale that make the dinosaurs not focused on the humans because of the bigger threat in the room’ happens like normal” but instead of that based in the reality of human animal bonds like that plot point(s) with tons of potential, the marketing team were to busy jerking it to “Owen and blue literally do a Mario and Luigi game series-like bros attack” because fuck being realistic in an engaging and interesting way, THAT DOESN’T FUCKING SELL MOVIES OR TOYS
Tldr: animals can experience empathy, contrary to what you were (intentionally or not) implying in the video. Also the blue, Owen dynamic is a bunch of wasted potential that could have been so much more if it was portrayed in a more realistic way of how human animal bonds are like when the animal is a predator capable of easily killing the human in question (in that they exist but are as shaky as the concept sounds to someone who hasn’t seen an example of it occuring)

I have seen many terrible reviews and criticisms of the sequels by a lot of people yet somehow get everything wrong with their attention to detail being way off and being unfair and having some double standards. But here, this is actual constructive criticism I can actually respect for once. I actually enjoy the JW movies but I also agree with this video. The Lost World is always going to be the best sequel.

Some films don't need a trilogy. One of the main reasons why The Lost World was better was because the foundation was already written by Michael Crichton. Credit goes to him.

The Lost World Jurassic Park is seriously an underrated sequel, like its a sequel as good as Empire Strikes Back. It definitely deserves more treatment just like Jurassic Park.

Well I mean, Dominion didn’t over-rely on Dino sequences, but the writing certainly didn’t help it in that regard, and of course none of the Dino scenes really helped with the themes of the film.

there are no good Jurassic sequels and I'm a huge fan also no one wanted a sequel except universal its why the charcters didnt return after the original fallen kingdom has moments as does Jurrasic world but lost world was a mess and 3 was garbage but more enjoyable then lost world

Hoskins is way more likable than the Spinosaurus just saying like why is every scene chasing. Also hoskins gets eaten.
The dinosaurs aren’t supposed to be likable or unlikable. They are animals, not characters.

Good thing JW aint a sequel. It is based on the OG park yet ignores the second and third film (thou i guess sorna still has the massive fleet surounding it? That will keep the children away from it in their yacht? No? SHAME YOU! They even got the Iowa out for that quarantain area!(and remember : they had 2 Fleet Carriers in JP3 at the end supporting the saving of the people, along with other assets etc.))
Oh and Roland was extremly pissed as ludlow fell on the baby rex leg, breaking it. He aint an antagonist, he is basicaly an anti hero. He captured the baby, yet would have let it return to mama if the buck was delt with regardless, thou he would have lost the encounter realy, the buck is imune to even AR fire it seems.
An elephant gun is far far far more powerful than an AR one struggles to kill deer the other can punch through thick steel plates.
Sorry to disagree but that's my least favorite Jurassic Park Movie. I really hated it!
Spinosaurus is a cool dinosaur
I think the three movies were great, when compared to any of the Jurassic world ones. They even made an attempt of making the raptors more accurate in the third movie with the quills and round pupils. Jurassic world just back tracked and gave em snake eyes again.

UGH, ur one of THEM?!?! It’s actually the only jurassic park movie that SUCKED! And I think it’s obvious u just hate william H. Macy, and téa leoni, cause 3 was AWESOME! I have a theory that the people who all hate 3 is because they’re all butt hurt about the spino killing the trex.....it fits even more, cause from what I hear and see, those same people r the ones who ADORE lost world, which happens to be basically about the trexes(with some raptors mixed in). Lost world even sucked more than fallen kingdom, cause at least that one had a really interesting
plot, overall....just real boring after they got off the island. While in a way I like JP3 the most, the first one was just an absolute MASTERPIECE!!!! anyone who actually likes lost world more than the FIRST ONE...well, ur opinion doesn’t even count, cause clearly u slept thru the first one!
