From a young age Niels Jorgensen wanted nothing more than to follow in his father's footsteps and become an FDNY Firefighter. After serving in the Army Reserve and a short stint with the NYPD, Niels got the opportunity to apply for and ultimately be accepted into the FDNY brotherhood.
On September 11, 2011 Niels was off duty and working a side job to help make ends meet when he witnessed the first plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Moments later, Jorgensen made the decision to return to his firehouse when he saw the second plane hit the South Tower, and knew our country was under attack.
Jorgensen would arrive at Ground Zero shortly after the collapse of the South Tower and begin the arduous task of searching for survivors amongst the rubble. He would spend four consecutive days working in the flaming rubble and breathing in the toxic air. Years later Jorgensen would be diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia.

@@teetedm1 Physicians take a vow to do no harm. There was plenty of evidence to put him on leave to do further testing/ treatment. No excuse- them jumping to conclusions with evidence for concern literally in their hands shows lack of integrity & empathy. They 100% should have lost their license.

My blood pressure was 240/140 just listening to how those so-called doctors treated you! You deserved SO much better than the care you got, and I’m glad you were finally able to get a good team of medical professionals to lead you to remission! Many thanks for your service and bravery.
I wish him a full recovery, from his cancer , from the trauma of 9/11 , from the loss of friends , from the indifference of some doctors .
I also thank those who fought for the first responders to have their conditions recognized.

My nana had leukemia. The doctors told her she had 2 weeks to live. Multiple times they said that. My family planned her funeral twice. That was 30 years ago and she’s still here. Prayers for this lovely man ❤

My great grandfather was a WWII veteran he went to basic at fort McClellan, he was on Omaha beach with the 29 infantry division, after 9/11 he said the only people as brave as the men we hit the beach with are the ones who went into those towers they're true heroes, he was a very proud American and after 9/11 he realized that what they did over there wasn't for nothing, it was to keep this country free because so many people are dieing to take that freedom.
Well said, As bad 9/11 was it didn't thankfully damage the economy and well being of the country execpt in security measures. Within a few years the Freedom Tower was built and the preparators were wiped out in Afghanistan which nowadays the whole tragedy seems like a distant memory

As a retired physician, I am appalled by your treatment by certain doctors. I cannot do anything to change that.........all I can say is thank you for your service.

It's sad that a firefighter from one of the largest fire departments had to work 3 jobs so his wife could stay home to raise the children. This country doesn't deserve this man.
I always feel sick what we did to our first responders after 9/11. They needed the care, it was crystal clear that area was a toxic mess after the Towers collapsed. The buildings were filled with asbestos as it is and the first responders were given nothing more than regular dust masks that in a summer heat and constantly digging gets stuffy, sweaty and uncomfortable. People got sick quick! This was just NYC’s way to try and quickly get the city re-open and not lose business. I worked five 9/11 funerals for those who died from the toxic dust, four FDNY members and one NYPD detective (I even told my boss at the time I don’t care about getting paid to work these funerals, these men deserve respect and our city turned their back on them). Now many years after, the city had the nerve to say they were willing to tell the truth about the health affects from the WTC Site but under the condition nobody can sue the city. That pretty much confirms what everyone suspects, that there were worse health effects that were on the site. And it is not just first responders that got sick, everyone in and around that region south of Canal Street on and after 9/11 have gotten sick and died!
You’re a hero sir. Shame on those who dismissed you in you’re time of need. That’s a Fn disgrace. RIP to the lives lost on 911. We will never forget. ❤

If a patient told me that they feel like they are DYING, AND THEIR BLOOD WORK IS COMPLETELY OUT OF ORDER?!? Imma IMMEDIATELY get them help. What the hell?
Yeah, if you’re clearly a troubled soul and there’s no medical necessity outside of psychiatric treatment, all imma do is try and push you to those who can help. Addiction, mental health conditions, I can’t help, but I can only get you to the source. I will never simply say “nope. Not my issue”.
Even if it’s something I don’t know how to help you with, I will get you to the source. That’s what makes you a good healthcare worker.

I have written, deleted, written and rewritten my comment in reposne to this man's story. Have so much going through my head about it. Seems like such a great guy. The two things that stick out to me is how some of the medical personnel were aholes to him, which I have had happen to me, and the craziness about the first responders having trouble with having children and it rarely being publicized. So terrible

As someone who was born in Brooklyn and raised in Staten Island as well, I cant help but feel a bond with Niels Jorgensen. A true American patriot and hero
My uncle was retired nyfd and when he heard what happened, he lived far out in Brooklyn and grabbed his old gear and drove as close to thr tunnel as he could and it was closed.
He somehow got thrm to let him walk through the tunnel and help out. He spent weeks helping.
Turns out his old engine in lower Manhattan, most of the on duty crew died
Did the dust from the environment cause complications for him? Cancer, etc!

The sad result, the war on terror was a gross miscalculation that led to needless dying in most cases
Every single medical license holder that dismissed pile response first responders' medical concerns needed to lose those licenses. Their disrespect and delays led to a worsening in injuries and deaths. They also prioritized staffing and budgets over humans to the point of covering up the known exponentially high cancer rates.
I feel like those dismissive medical workers will experience the same thing when they're older and hurting

I’ll never forget where I was that day like so many others. I was working in a bank in the back rooms and one of the male bankers from the front came out of lunch room where we all were and exclaimed with his gel back hair, “A plane just hit the World Trade Center!” We naturally marched back to the lunch room and watched until I finally saw with others another plane come in flying in a round about way and then a burst of flames. I said if my Effing God to the bank manager, not sure if she was shocked by my offensive vulgarity or by what she and I both saw. I think seeing the plane come in from the side and swoop around to its target was the most shocking. It’s like you got to see what hell was coming but couldn’t stop it, then just a burst of flames. I hate how powerless I felt that day. I wish in a sick way that retaliation would be visible in the way our horror was. But I guess we are just going to keep that a secret with the men who take care of bad guys and get things done. And I’m sure they did and do.

Everyone involved with 9/11 deserves to have their medical care paid for the duration of their lives and the lives of their families members affected. They sacrificed their health to help others. It’s the bare minimum of what the government should do for these people. It makes me so angry that members of the government use 9/11 and veterans for that matter for talking points and clout yet so many are treated like garbage.
When you see these stories you can take your hat off put your hand over your heart and say thank you sir for your service.
This specific story is why department-employed physicians should no longer be a thing. These doctors don't make decisions based on the needs of their patients. They make them based on the decisions of department heads. "It would be too much overtime" is not a valid reason to turn away someone who is sick.
Medical care in the US is a joke. I will *never* be able to understand how you can tolerate this system. I'm from Europe and lived in the US for a while. When I was there, an American friend of mine was turned away from the hospital when he had leukemia because he didn't have insurance. His family had to start a Go Fund Me for him, and the money turned up being used for his funeral. Now Im not saying Zach could have been cured because leukemia is tough as hell, but how can hospitals and doctors turn patients away because they're broke even though they have the means to help them ?? *How ??* My American friends, *how can you tolerate this ??* What the hell is going on ???

Your story is heartbreaking. Sadly, one story out of THOUSANDS! Thank God you’re a cancer survivor and you finally got good care & compassion, however, you are still very much another victim of 9/11. More & more souls are dying of cancer and all kinds of ailments, and far too young. They’re ALL victims of 9/11, even though they didn’t die on that horrific day.

What an incredible story. I admire they way he held himself. I am infuriated for him. There is a special place in hell for people like those incompetent physicians. i was only 4 months old in denver on 9/11 and sadly i’ve learned more about this tragedy personally than about 90% of my generation, this subject is glanced over quicker then the vietnam war topic and it’s so heartbreaking
If it makes people uncomfortable, it should. Either learn from it or you’ll see a repeat of it again (and with the way things are going on in the Middle East, some of us here in NYC have that thought in the back of our heads).
Tell me about it. I’m a very weird age, I was born in ‘98. So I’m a Gen Z, but not really. I’m certainly more millennial, so is everyone my year and earlier, because 9/11 exists AFTER our memory wipe.
In fact, for most people born in ‘98, 9/11 is the memory wipe. The first memory. Maybe you’re lucky and you kept something from just before, but for me and everyone else my age, 9/11 is our first memory.
I remember my mother crying. I remember being late for school, then not going at all. I remember being with her watching the news. I remember calling her friend, a financier who worked on the 82nd floor of the south tower, and the line dropping when the second plane hit.
But my wife was born ON 9/11 proper.
And her story is so sad, because you’re right. Her peers had no concept of it because it was “triggering” or whatever. So she’s never had a birthday. The elders only talk about the attacks, her peers turn their brains off every year on that day. Sucks. I’ve tried hard to make 9/11 her day instead of about 9/11.
@@D.Ambrose I was born in 1992. I was about to turn 8 years old when 9/11 happened. We watched it all unfold on TV and saw the second plane hit on Live TV in our classroom (I am not sure how we got the word, but I believe one of the teachers husbands worked in the Trade Center or First Responders and put two and two together realizing it was an attack and called the school to warn his wife). I still remember looking to my side and seeing the shock and horror on the faces of our teachers after that second plane hit, If they could have screamed they would have because they had their mouths shut. We literally watched people die on live TV, today’s generation would be going into a fetal position if they witnessed something similar. We lost plenty of firefighters and individuals in our neighborhood. It was a bad time in general and the rest I would rather not talk about because I get not only upset, but very angry.

It would absolutely destroy any of these kids. And that’s not good. Next generation of war fighters bro…
My story of 9/11 is basically the same account. I’ll never forever my mom coming to get us out of school and her crying the whole way home. Still pisses me off to this day. To the younger generation, you can’t explain the feeling until you see it happen and it’s hits a different nerve. To all the people who say we should turn the page on 9/11, I say no. There’s still people that wanna do it again. And they wanna kill you too.

I had the honor to meet many members of FDNY when I took my Wife to NYC for Christmas a few years before she passed. We were walking around the normal tourist sites right after the guy blew himself up in the subway, so as you can imagine many of New York’s Finest were on the streets. Nice guys all without exception, made our trip even more special and changed my perception of New York completely.

I was in a firefighting class. Our instructor got word and turned on the TV. Holy 🤬, I knew. I was already a military veteran. Tried to get back in, didn't happen. 😐🤬😞
First thing, Thank you Sir for your life that you have shared towards loving and protecting the people who never knew you. As for the medical aspects, my wife is a cancer survivor, mismanaged radiation treatment and neglect survivor, and is presently recovering from approximately her 7th surgery in 12 years to keep her rotted bones in place to allow her some form of existence with the body parts that still work and pain control. We have experienced the angels in the medical world and also the persons who I could have crushed their sculls due to horrific isensitive attitudes and behavior. It takes prayer and re-forgivness since I also need forgivness and so that we can have a life at all. Thank you to all of those tired and stressed medical angels who cared for Niels Jorgensen and my wife. No amount of thanks is enough to explain the peace and comfort you all give the patients and the families when you yourself are worn out and when we are at our most vulnerable and weakened condition.

It takes a lot of courage telling your story . Thank you and all the fallen . I from an upstate and we lost a dear family friend for whom I was good friends with one of his daughters . I knew the family most of my school years. I had just returned from the Marines and lost my mother in a 10-50 on her way home from work . The only person I remember at the service was Juan . He was very upset and had such kind words . Such a terrible time . Juan was a kind Soul and his family is beautiful. Never Forget

God bless and protect you. Thank you for your service. I was a police officer in a small town for 26 years, so although I understand the idea of serving a community, your world was totally different from mine. I don’t blame you for being upset with the lousy doctors. But the anger we feel for the stupid actions of others only raises our blood pressure, not theirs. It sounds like you learned to forgive and let it go, which is the healthiest thing you could have done. Keep fighting.
