Your comment about enjoying working on those had me smiling. In the late 90’s I had a European version of that same car while living in Italy (520i…maybe?). It was indeed flat, smooth, and powerful. Well the fuel pump went out and I was absolutely cursing the prospect of dropping the tank in my tiny garage. Just on a whim I pulled the carpet back in the trunk and sure enough, there was a little access hatch. First time I had seen that! Job took like 20 minutes.

    • @joeyt6089

The fuel pump access hatch is pretty common on most cars with the exception of many American cars because it would have cost an extra 5 cents per vehicle.

My 98 Volvo had one. The mechanics I went to wanted to drop the tank anyway for $400. Went elsewhere. It was for the rollover cutoff check valve, which was on top of the tank right at the access hatch.

Sounds like a James Bond gizmo disguised as safety feature. This is Engineer level troubleshooting just looking at the schematic! Even the interior connectors are exposed to extreme temperature and humidity swings that can speed up the oxidation process. You nailed it by checking the easiest thing first.

I've noticed that BMW has their own trouble code numbering and code description system and its completely different from everyone else's. Definitely makes using different scan tools difficult. Additionally with the newer BMW cars maintenance is much more complicated. You can't even replace the battery without having to reprogram the new battery information into the car's module system. The smart charging system won't work without everything being reprogrammed. BMW does not like other people working on their cars they want you to have to go to the dealership. Glad you were able to fix this one without a bunch of hassles.

Since there is unseen contact corrosion there, being right next to the battery I would add a tiny dab of dielectric grease after the deox. You should check that the battery is vented properly. Acid fumes will definitely corrode those tiny pins and socket contacts. Nice job young man!

That battery disconnect using mini explosion is also called pyrofuse. Mercedes uses it too, some at battery positive post, some at f32 prefuse box. Actuation is similar to airbag. Monitoring it is via resistance, i believe above 5 ohms is considered too high. In an event of a strong enough crash/impact whole car on purpose loose +12v by firing of the pyrofuse, for prevention of fire. Its quite a sealed system without actual spark exciting any hydrogen or fuel vapor. Similar to race car on the hood manual battery disconnect if for fire prevention

When I see a battery in a space like that and all the connectors, fuse blocks it looks like a pack of troubles waiting to happen. Even vented that area will have acid fumes, and different humidity levels . and why would a engineer put a critical safety connector in such proximity of a battery? "Perfect" systems need perfect maintnance and that is very hard to find. You did a great job locating the fault, A dealer would probably sold bags sensors and modules, if available...

I had a look and took it for a drive and thought differently, offered a $1000 and was able to drive it home. Was lucky with my guess as the problems were superficial and external to the engine (not the timing chain) and waiting on the final parts for the fix. It has cost me a few hundred dollars for the fix. Also pleasantly surprised at easy removal of all electric radiator fan for easy access to front of motor.

There might be a bit of hype around a multimeter setting off an airbag etc but I can see that it might be a real risk too. I'm no expert when it comes to setting these things off but it's probably a hot wire approach.
How could a meter do it? Static electricity perhaps, if the point of breakdown just happens to be on the surface of the heater wire itself. Pretty remote but not impossible. Another would be accidentally putting the meter across the heater while it is in diode test mode. For the average meter there just isn't enough current to do it but a meter designed for testing high voltage diodes, it might be enough. The last and probably most likely would be accidentally having the meter leads connected to the current (amps or milliamps) terminals when testing the device and instead of measuring voltage from say vehicle - to device you allow high current to flow through it instead. Remember, the range selector on the meter usually doesn't switch the current shunt, it's always across the current input on the meter.
Again, I'm no expert on this so this is just idle musings.

Nice one Ivan. As much as you want to hate “euro trash” I know you are starting to see and appreciate some of the advanced engineering, with thought and integrity on the German stuff. 😅 Give it a few years and I see you rocking around in one. Land Rovers and Jaguars, they are rubbish and I am English. 😂

any vehicle with battery inside, is near always a tube vented type, with it run out the bottom. that way if boil over, roll-over, large off-gassing occurs, it vents outside into open air. no kabooms, from oxygen rich hydrogen gas +p (broken down water - H2O) 2 hydrogen molecule and one oxygen molecule. BOOM.

This car is rigged with explosives! Low current connectors can get slightly increased resistance over time - unplugging and replugging is enough to wipe out any residual patina.
No parts required and no bonus footage required - could be a first :-)

Be aware: its not a Myth that its risky to measure airbag system. Depending on the system and the multimeter it can ignite. It even can ignite by touching it with fingers by body tension. They tried it, its dangerous. It seems that newer components have a safety for that in the connector, if it is unplugged its safer.

I was just wondering if you look for a safety recall before you work on the air bag?
I know a safety recall wasn't the problem, it's just the 1st thing I would have done

Its a common problem, you can only replace the whole cable.. or disconnect it and place a small resistor..

Yes, it looks like the device installed in the vehicle is so close to the upper impedance spec that almost anything can cause the system to go out of spec and generate an error. I don't know about anyone else, but that seems like some very questionable engineering or a planned failure point to increase dealer service department revenue.
