    Kubrick is right. The Vanishing is the most frightening because it reflects life on a realistic but also philosophical level. We experience love and security, we fear the loss of such love and security, and then we lose this love and security under circumstances we never imagined. Then the consequence of our mind wanting to know exactly what happens to her (and to us). Then the revelation of how vulnerable we actually are outside of the parameters of what we think is universal morals, logic, and rules. The movie also plays on the theme of chance versus destiny, which has been debated for centuries to define our existence. Scary indeed, because for a seemingly small and low budget movie, the story hits all the psychological struggles we have as human beings.

    It's interesting that"Spoorloos", the original of "the vanishing" is REALLY a great film, and it's hollywood remake,also called the vanishing and made by Sluizer himself, is complete rubbish. I guess the producerswanted absolutely a happy ending, but that was total betrayal of the strength of the original. It's like buying a Ferrari and insisting that it must be transformed to be able to carry a family of six with luggage and change the engine so that it does not accelerate too fast to avoid the little one vomiting.

      The Hollywood remakes of acclaimed foreign films are nearly always weak. Let The Right One In is a good example. “Let me in” is the American unnecessary remake and it’s not bad but it has nothing to offer compared to the original. Also the US version of Oldboy is awful. I could think of many more examples but yeah.

    This movie indeed had the most terrifying ending of all time. Its not just because the bad guy won, but because the setup getting there is excellent. The typical formula for a murder thriller starts with what was done, then we know why it was done, then we know who done it. THis formula is reversed in this movie. We know first who did it, then we vaguely understand why, and throughout the movie we keep guessing and guessing what horrible fate that poor woman suffered. Was she mangled? Was she dismembered? Did he rape her first? In fact, we may still be hopeful that maybe she is still alive and held prisoner. IMagining all these things is A LOT scarier than simply guessing who is the killer behind the mask. Moreover, we are as desperate as the protagonist for answers. When we do get the answer, it is not good. We feel we are in her situation and we wanna get out, but there is no getting out. All we can do is watch in desperation

      An interesting fact is, that in the mind of George Sluizer the bad guy did not win. I read an interview with him on The Vanishing and he said that the end shot of the movie shows the bad guy after he has lost - he has nothing left to do. The protagonist (Rex) wins (in the bad guys twisted logic) by commiting to doing the thing that destiny would tell him not to do. One might compare this to the ending of the movie Seven where the killer wins (again in his own twisted logic) by having the protagonist kill him. This ending is the exact opposite.

    • @christiangasior4244
      @christiangasior4244 6 місяців тому +1

      I don’t think we even got the full answer. I feel like it’s up in the air as to whether he raped her before burying her alive. There’s that scene of him moving in mattresses and stuff to his new villa. I like that we don’t get all the answers, though. Keeps you thinking about the film for a lot longer. Also the killer isn’t always honest. He said he drugged the girl with a pill but in her case he chloroformed her. Unless he drugged her after, I dunno. But yeah great film.

  • @talibhassan652

    I don't understand the terrifying part? In fact it was bit of a bummer to build up story for answers and (Spoilers Alert!!) end up killing the protagonist. When he was offered drink by kidnapper death was one of the possibility and I kept thinking if he kills him by deception it would be a premature ending. And exactly that happened. Was it real? Yes by all means. But I don't see the point of keeping things real when you can offer great resolution to climax. Stylistically though I loved the movie.

    • @Slavicinferno
      @Slavicinferno Рік тому +2

      Its terrifying to most because without any gore and very little violence it shows just how easily someone can be kidnapped and murdered. It happens every day. If you listen to true crime this movie is hyper-realistic. Also portraying the killer as a happy family man who can complete blend in. The remake bothered they made Jeff Bridges too strange and an obvious monster.

      It's easy to explain.
      I think it's because your born after the 90s, so you saw scene's like that in other Movies example Burried, Kill Bill,...and, and, and.... but before 80s,70s... there are no similar endings, and shocking Movies without even Blood on the Screen. Without a happy Ending, where the Villian gets away, and the Good Guy suffers & Die. It was different at 'that Time'!!! Same for the Movies Se7en, Fight Club, Matrix, it's not the same Effect when People watch it now for the first Time and then. The next is, the original Version had a really gritty realistic Documentary Style, Great analysis of a Psychopath like never before. And the actor who portrait the Villian was amazing!, a lot better then Jeff.B...
