Sean Baker is an amazing realist and humanist director. I love his films and I absolutely love how he cites other great filmmakers of the same vein like Lee Chang Dong, Mike Leigh, Chantel Akerman, and Edward Yang
It's funny to see now after watching "The Florida Project" that he chose here great movies starred by kids like "Kes", "Yi Yi" and "Secret Sunshine" that served as divine inspiration to make this new film. The result couldn't be better: Brooklynn Prince is terrific in "The Florida Project".
That he’s so complimentary about his influences, and that he’s so forthright about what he loves about different films….beyond being a great filmmaker, he also seems like a great mentor. Just watch Joanna Arnow’s newest film, which she wrote and directed and he produced.

I think the dream of the overnight success indie director like Robert Rodriguez or Kevin Smith is dead now. Far too many folks are out there making movies now with little-to-no financial support, so the mere accomplishment of getting a feature-length indie done on your own isn't as impressive a feat to studio executives as it was back during the analog era. If there's anyone here who's also an aspiring filmmaker like me, my advice for them is to keep calm and keep trying. Not everyone can have a breakout indie debut like Steven Soderbergh or Richard Linklater. It takes time, patience, and hard work.
I met this guy at the Virginia Film Festival back in 2008 (he gave a talk on his movie Prince of Broadway, which was a great watch); really cool guy, I'm glad to see he's still making/talking about movies :D
Great picks all around! I love seeing the inspiration coming from Edward Yang and Lee Chang-dong. Both are incredible directors who are able to capture the lives and frustrations of very real people in their respective nations, just like Baker does with America.
This guy is fuckin' adorable. Like a little kid in a candy store. Finally, someone picked up Naked! I keep seeing it in all of these closet raid videos and no one ever picks it up, I keep daydreaming that I get to pick it one day. I liked the Florida project, but I have to see more of Sean's movies.
Tina Privitera seriously. The Florida Project being skipped over like it was was such a huge insult to, what I felt, was one of the top three films of the year.
Anybody else get the feeling that Criterion Collectors are starting to resemble vinyl collectors like we see in HIGH FIDELITY? Where we all turn into a bunch of elitists arguing over which Danish movement was best, make lists of best sophomore efforts (and shitting on people with more than 4 English-language films in any list), and keep demanding Blu-ray editions of obscure Senegalese Third Cinema movies? I mean, I'm looking FORWARD to it, but...I still worry.
David Heslin No, it's not. But the TEMPTATION to be purist assholes can be very strong when you start talking about what makes a quality film worthy of recognition from Criterion.
What's the alternative? Seeing the latest Vin Diesel film twice in the theatre because it yields such lovely charms upon second viewing? I'll stick with Criterion, thanks. Voluntary elitist over here. Too much fucking annoying pandering happening everywhere else in the world.
It's insane how no one ever talks about how young he looks doesn't even look in his 50s how he managed this and how he's lifestyle i always wonder that in my head watching his movies
Life is Sweet is one of my top favorites of all time and Mike Leigh is one of my favorite directors, that's so cool he was influenced by Life is Sweet enough to include a scene in Tangerine that was inspired by it. From the thumbnail I was wondering if that was the DVDs he was holding cause I have it on criterion as well.
Envious Sean worked with Mary Woronov, and can get her to sign Eating Raoul! She's so cool! Really hope Criterion could issue Scenes From A Class Struggle In Beverly Hills. Get Mary's thoughts in there, Beltram and all. The contrast to Eating Raoul would be so interesting.
