Norm, I got to visit your layout a few months ago with the Rail Rats group, and just came across your channel. Love the videos - and obviously your modeling is next level. Thanks for making these! ~Tom
Thanks Tom - it was really nice have you guys over!
好美麗的蒸氣火車,它又不會大量噴黑煙,真好。
Wait.....are my eyes deceiving me? Not only is a n&w on a Pennsylvania line but smoke😂
PRR leased 1 Class A along with 1 C&O T1 for testing right before WW2 to see which loco they wanted to make. They decided on choosing the T1 so the J1 was born. Lionel did make a fantasy model of a “What if” PRR paint scheme with J1 and Q2 styled cab and some other modifications.
Now that's what I'm talkin' bout. You did a running session x 2, a review, and a tutorial within a tutorial (weathering and cleaning airbrush). That's just mastery man! Not many can make 30 minutes go by so fast. All around thanks.
Norm’s awesome!
Where it is available? And Cost?
Your great work is as per usual astoundingly and brilliantly detailed and painted and set up... just remarkably beautiful and masterfully presented... you are too young to have seen what you have brilliantly modeled and through which I lived... dude i am 75 years of age... you have preserved the era of Eastern Seaboard steam... thank you, Arthur...
Hey Norm,
I loved your latest video on weathering your Lionel Class A! It really brings the engine to life. With a detailed layout like yours & everything weathered, you have to do your magic & I'm glad you documented the process. I've yet to weather mine, but hope to soon.
I'm looking forward to future videos, maybe a follow up to your short double header with a Y on the rear.
Thanks for your contribution to the hobby!
I'm hoping to get more hoppers in Appalachian flavors. Hoping to get to the Y3 project in the next couple months..!
Beautiful work on that Class A Norm!!! I'm a big N&W fan and that engine sure is impressive. I got one when they came out and man what a nice engine. Really cool to see one all weathered up by you. Looks great!!!
Thanks Sid! Now I need way more hoppers...
Very nice Norm. Looks amazing. I like the night time run bys at the end.
So cool Norm. You have a great eye for weathering and realism
It’s always a great pleasure to see your tutorials how to weather trains!
Great work as always. I enjoyed the in depth look at your weathering. The night running scenes are sick!
Thanks - I am hoping to do more night shots in the future.
Beautifull layout , you are not just an artist , you are a magician !!!
Man I keep coming back to this video, well done thank you.
Norm - you never disappoint. Many thanks for this awesome vid. The smoke was nice.
Absolutely incredible realism! BRAVO!
Whew, had me raising an eyebrow there for a minute, I
was thinking Norm has went
Rogue running a shiny plastic
Steamer with Smoke!! Very nice job Norm!!
Great video Norm of the VL Class “A”. Love the in depth on weathering your class “A”. When I got mines, I immediately install the Kadee coupler too. Great engine, great runner and enjoy the running scenes especially the Night scene. Awesome job again Norm and love the Class A all weathered up!!!
BRAVO NORM BRAVO MAGNIFICENT ENGINE AND GREAT DEMO
Norm What a great video! Love the engine and your weathering
Wonderful weathering. Thanks a lot for sharing your great but simple techniques. The loco looks brilliant on your fabulous layout. The loco smoke effects are by far the best I've seen, whether the loco is stationary or going at speed. As other viewers have commented, you have an artist's eye, Norm. I'm now subscribed and looking forward to more of your videos.
Beautiful locomotives, tenders, scenery !
One of the most exquisite examples of layout and modeling I have ever seen
Thanks!
Beautiful, just beautiful!
Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
Awesome Norm! Definitely a great video!
Finally a video showing ow weathering done on a model thanks for posting it!
I love that you use scale couplers instead of the default 3 rail knuckle couplers
Wish NS would have kept running their excursion program, my Dad, oldest daughter & I rode behind the 1218 on one trip to Fort Wayne & back to Allen Park. Also, the 611 as well.
Great modeling, beautiful railroad. I won't mention that middle rail .
Great layout. Super detailed.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wow! Expertly work!
Norm, your work is pure creativity, sort of like a Leonardo DaVinci in modern times using model railroading as your venue of creativity. Have you had experience with Atlas O's scale-sized electro-couplers? They are sometimes a bear to install but look great and mate well with Kadee. Ever since the 70's when I first got into model trains, I thought it odd that Kadee made their couplers to be capable of actually mating with Lionel's over-sized knuckle couplers. Of course I've come to understand why and it was from a marketing standpoint, very ingenious. Back to your creativity, I wish I had your eye.
I need the HD to render!
Edit: to those wondering, I watched this within the first 30 minutes and the resolution was still sub 720p.
Looks awesome 😎👍
Well rounded video!!!. Love seeing how other people go about weathering. Must be a little nerve testing to weather a VL engine, but it does look great on your layout and amongst your other engines. Looks out of place clean going around your layout, lol. Great work as always!!!
Such a great job you did with this, not that I'm surprised. I saw 1218 running in real life and rode behind her once, so I have a spot spot for the N&W As. I just texted the link to this video with the words, "Watch this and then tell me that 3-rail can't look prototypical!"
Excellent video, Thanks for presentation, from Germany
Love the N&W A Class Model and train set.
Helluva Good. You are a man after my own heart..
Holy smokes again ❤
OUTSTANDING 🇺🇸
Awesomeness!
Wonderful locomotive! Looks so realistic as always Norm!
Breathtaking! Your weathering is absolutely fantastic. Just like in old photos and film footage of the prototype! Pardon my ignorance, I presume this is 1/48th O scale (?). You can feel the heft of these classic giant steamers. Marvelous!
Thanks, yes this is O scale 3 rail.
It's incredible wow.
Fantastic!!!!
Always gret to see trains running on your layout!! I have a Williams brass #1218 that I bought for $250 that will have to do for me. Thx
PS: LOVE the O Winston Link shots!!!!!
I was Thinking the same thing !!!!!!!!!!!
Also was wondering if..................
Anyone else noticed too ?????????????
Moin,einfach ein Traum 👍😊
Very good!!
Awesome!!!
You sir are an artist, whose medium is O Gauge trains. Very impressive
Awesome locomotive.
One word, SWEEEEEET!
Really awesome video Norm! Love the weathering job too, adds so much realism to it!! Do you do weathering work for people by any chance? Kinda wanna get on of my VL Class A’s weathered after watching this haha 😄
Good looking smoke.
I told you at York
You are a genius
Great norm, I love these engines I have 3 . Love the weathering approach fantastic layout as well can you remember the nane of your black ground cover, very realistic
Thanks! If you are talking about the ballast it's Woodland Scenics Fine Cinders.
Love that Helluva Good Dip! 😋
Thanks!
Looks awesome 👌 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃
It looks like 1218 right after it's restoration in the 80s.
Great video. New subscriber.
took awhile till i realized it was a model train..
Since when did you run smoke? 😂 Excellent, as always.
I used to just whether my trucks with powdered graphite on the wheel sets and the truck frames
Norm I live in Taylor Michigan and was wondering what you were going to do with the old Wilcox building. I remember it well being ALL my grandparents, aunts,Uncle and cousins lived in Plymouth. I would like to buy it if it's ForSale.
If you don't mind a little more advice. Mark Tyson had an operation in Springdale Arkansas he had a gated community for
NORM......... LOL I LOVE TRAINS
Looks Fantastic! Do I see steam coming from the whistle? Wish they could do that in HO!
Yes it has whistle steam and pop valve steam too.
Is it possible to get a track plan illustration to provide additional context?
Gorgeous work!!
Thanks, I covered my trackplan in my layout tour vid: ua-cam.com/video/mYMpykWGRso/v-deo.html
nice black and white night shots at the end--channeling your O. Winston Link inner self?
Thanks! I might do some more, they were kinda fun!
smart maniac! )) Greetings from Russia
I really like this style and amount of weathering. A couple of questions Norm: After spraying Dullcote, Polyscale, etc. do you clean the locomotive wheels and those rollers? I would assume that not doing so would cause problems. What solvent are you using to clean your airbrush? Thanks, Norm.
I clean the wheels and rollers with lacquer thinner on a Q-Tip. I run Windex through my airbrush to clean out the bulk of the paint then disassemble it and do the final cleaning with lacquer thinner.
Thanks for the advice, Norm. I gave it a shot today on an HO scale Y6b. Everything worked out, especially considering that it was my first attempt at weathering at steam engine. I made my Y6b slightly dirtier by dry brushing on some grayish-brown after the reefer gray on the lower parts of the engine. I also used a bit of weathering powders afterwards for a more dusty effect.
Excellent as usual. Norm what size or scale Ballast do you use? It looks great.
Thanks man - Woodland Scenics Fine Cinders is my topmost layer.
@@normstrains thxs!
Hi From Australia! What do you shoot your videos with? Great depth of field!
iPhone 13 these days
You should be able to seal that tank with some Epoxy, dry it out and seal.
I think I am going to permanently retire it. It had a good run! I will try to remember to drain the new one more often...
Such a beautiful engine Norm. How much did you pay for it?
Antik Klasik ya kereta gini di Indonesia sudah habis di ROMBENG
Norm, what do you use for your liquid mask? I have not had good results with the product I have tried. Thank you.
I use Vallejo. Seems to work well. I try to use it as I go since the instructions don't recommend it be left on overnight.
@@normstrains Thank you very much. I have used another brand and it was difficult to remove. I will try the Vallejo and your instructions.
I used some in Chronicles #6.
@@normstrains Again many thanks. I will check that out.
Norm, hoping you could possibly provide a bit of guidance, or maybe even consider a bit of a pros and cons video of some description.
I've got the usual small scale plastic stuff we won't mention, but for some years I've been enjoying the older standard / wide gauge tinplate throwing their considerable weight around.
I've been quite a fan of your layout and rolling stock for sometime, but haven't really been brave enough to jump in. All my standard gauge is old original simple brute force items, so the intricacies of O gauge scale is a bit scary.
I'm a little reluctant to go thunking down a large wad of cash for a visionline articulated, but how does the weaver brass shape up? A k line scale mikado? Does one need train master TCC, if so would it be better to get one with all the biscuits already? All this electrickery boards and compatibility and obsolescence or burnouts is off putting a little, even to the point of forgoing the juicy bits and running as just straight dc...
Or just plain one day bite the bullet and be happy ever after...
Depending on the vintage, both K-Line diecast and Weaver brass could be factory equipped with Lionel TMCC and Railsounds. These would have been made in the early 2000s. Be sure to research them carefully. For Lionel command control hardware, the old CAB-1/Base combo can still be found for reasonable sums and can run any TMCC engine in full command mode.
When will you weather It?
He is weather it now
Hi Norm, I don't know if you remember him, but my son was very excited to meet you at the York show. He was wondering if you could tell him what kind of airbrush you use. Thanks, Cara
Yes I remember! My airbrush is the classic Paasche VL!
How cute ❤😘
खुब छान
Is this O gauge or G? I’ve heard of G gauge using a third rail before for old models and track.
This is O gauge.
Usted, vesina besas locomotoras
Can You Make Lionel Legacy Pennsylvania Railroad V1?
What kind of track is that?
Atlas O
What’s the 3rd rail for?
Good times!
Hi Norm--who made the caboose?
That is a repainted 2 rail Weaver brass CG.
@@normstrains for the life of me I cannot understand why Lionel didnt do a proper caboose to go with this engine--
@@user-gy5wf1up6z not to mention at least a couple sets of 50 ton hoppers!
Cái đầu máy hơi nước này sao sơn màu đen, nó phải là màu đỏ mới đúng
I don't even want to know the price of that locomotive.
who made the NW caboose
Weaver. It was originally in the blue scheme when I got it. I painted, decaled, and weathered it for steam era.
I meant weather using talk-to-text
If we had a passenger trains it will we can move people's across this land.. on the postal service with Union Pacific right now be a good time to think about it we can use the refugees that's coming into our country delivering mail they did a lot of walking. Two and two together be a great
Hola soy Guillermo, de Medellín Colombia, quiero, comprar una máquina de esas,
If the speed of the first train was to scale, I think the real one would desintegrate. The speed of the second train looks more like scale. Just an opinion.
The Class A in real life could go to 70MPH. I don’t think I went much faster than 50. The max usable speed on my CAB-2 is 70MPH but I rarely run that fast.
