Dude, I am so impressed with your work and the time you take to truly bring your locos and rolling stock up to an incredible level of prototypical realism. I think your level of weathering is just about perfect, just enough to show it's used but not so much that it looks like it's ready for the scrap yard. Keep up the great work!
Nice acquisition, I just picked up 15 of these Lionel diecast coal hoppers. The C&O, Erie, CNJ, Reading, D&H and B&O versions. I've already got the NYC versions. Lionel did a really nice job with these cars. Thanks for sharing.
Those are some sweet hoppers Norm!! Back in the 80s my cousin set up a nice Lionel layout and since we lived next to the Big 4 Dow line we would walk it and pick up chunks of coal that came off a passing Conrail unit train then Dave would crush them for loads on his hoppers!! He still regrets selling all of his equipment off to this day!!!
Who would give this thumbs down? As always, I'm left speechless at Norm's artistic ability and attention to detail. This video had me thinking of back in the day on the N&W with two Y6s on the point and one pushing or maybe an A mixed in.
You can have the 3 rail equipment which is now REALLY nice concerted to 2 rail. That modification you perform on that equipment is so scale that I know that I would want to start putting the effort onto a conversion. Regardless of whether or not you do, at least look into the possibility. Either way you do Fantastic work. GREAT JOB!
You talking about a second run of jlc alleghenys made me wonder if youd go for the legacy allegheny released a while back. As far as i know it uses the tooling of the jlc one with a more accurate sound set. Great video and layout as well, man
I wouldn’t mind a Legacy Allegheny. The JLC one was super nice, but that whistle stunk. Sold it off a couple years ago since I hadn’t run it in years. Just got a Gloor C&O caboose kit for a future project.
JB Weld would have been easier fix to misplaced hole. Great product, have used it on my own freight cars. Something else that may help. Make a silicon flat mold of your 3D printed shims. Then you can Polyurethane Resin cast the shims in resin. Way cheaper to produce shims.
Enlightening and fun video with your usual awesome results Norm! The more of these tutorial type videos you show the more I realize you really are human, lol. Two questions...do you just use the coal loads that come with the cars to add your own coal load? Also, do you use real coal?
This particular train was 38 cars plus the caboose. I normally run 20-24 cars most of the time. The reason the run-bys cut off so soon is that I was trying to focus on the hoppers and hide the fact that I don't have an N&W caboose yet!
At 6:51 I showed a glimpse of the effort. I probably should have explained further. I just use the plastic loads and coat them with white or carpenters glue then sprinkle on coal. I will then spray them down with ‘wet water’ and dribble some diluted white glue over the coal to help secure it, much like doing ground cover on the layout.
You layout just blows me away !👍
Chronicles of me being chronically addicted to this channel lol
My name is Uncle Ariel Ethan Mermaid.
Weathering info always welcome!!! Thanks
Darn, looking good ! I prefer hoppers to look somewhat beat up to look more realistic. If everything looked new, it just doesn't cut it. Enjoy !

Your organization is a skill unto its own and it has become a battle to get paint these days.

Looking good friend!
Always look forward to a new video.... Love what you did with these coal cars...
Amazing detail 😊
Great job on weathering and some awesome shots 😊
Thanks for sharing
Absolutely beautiful video and production outstanding work love it 😊🔥 cheers KC Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🤝😎👍
Nice work, keep em coming!
Once again I'm impressed with how cool this stuff is! Can't wait for the next episode!
You did a superb job. They look awesome!
OUTSTANDING work as always! I'm not into 3-rail but if I ever got into standard gauge, I'd FOR SURE emulate a great deal of what you've done here
Brilliance!
Beauty in motion! Very nice!
Great works, impressive job.
Great looking cars.👍
Nice work thanks for sharing
Great weathering Norm.
Nicely done! I need to practice your methods of weathering! Very impressive work!

Thanks man, as for haters, pfft who cares! They can sit there and sulk for all I care!
I am an HO guy Norm, but I can definitely see the draw with large scale. Nice work on the hoppers! I am in Virginia so they hit home for me.

Nice job & the right tools.
Thank you Norm.this was a good video. Have a good Thanksgiving.
You should put your 3D printer to use and convert a Y6B to Y6A and then run a push/pull coal freight like N&W used to do in Virginia in the 1950's.
I almost snagged a Legacy Y3 at York.

Great movie the dirty dozen is
if you can find it Mr. Color is REALLY good
I was looking at their catalog, maybe I'll try some soon.
Hi Norm. Great work. I like the realism in your layout.
BTW. I have an original shipper/boxed Legacy Allegheny if you'd be interested.
Fantastic!
Oh no, you can't run them without a caboose, FRED's haven't been invented yet!
I was pulling the cut of hoppers out of the siding, but yes, I am in need of an N&W caboose.
Another color you may like is Mr Hobby GCI 125 (cowling Black).
They make some interesting stuff.🧐

Disagree especially since these parts take about a minute a piece to pop out. Also, much faster to adjust shim height with the printer.
@@normstrains To each their own.
@@ModelingSteelinHO what you described was like 9 times the work it took to make simple parts 😂
@@normstrains Ok. We do things differently is all.

26:22 I do the same thing with my kadee cars lol
👍
I have to ask what are the average lengths of your trains? I tried counting them but the camera keeps cutting out.

Old from 2005?My N&W from 1956.
Beautiful cars. How do you make your coal loads?

Did you ever find that JLC C&O H7 yet?
@@DynamicDuo795 no I never did. Maybe someday!
I usually do aim powders do you?
I have a bunch of powders I’ll use once in a while.
Are those kadee couplers the same as HO or are they O scale specific?
They are O scale. I prefer the 805s.
😍😍😍😍😍
I do not understand putting KD couplers on an o-scale car when Katie couplers are for ho scale.
@@JoshuaProudfoot-l5b they make couplers in many scales. They look and work much better than standard 3 rail couplers.
@@normstrains ok, to me it dose not seam right switching out the couplers unless they're broken.
Can't hear you speak in this video.
