It's mindboggling on how that he can produce the haunting moaning sound while doing the spiralling progressions in the piece. In the cd recording of this piece, I thought the moaning came from a separate instrument or someone else singing or humming to it while Colin played the spiral progressions but I can see in this video that all of it is coming from just his one sax so again it is completely mindboggling to me in how he could do this. Tis all the more beautiful though...
I've probably already commented here... But I'm still amazed everytime I see this performances. He's said practicing to play like this is similar to training for a marathon. Watching him here... I can't think of a better comparison.
Album version is nice but man this composition really takes flight in this live version where he has space to stretch out. Just a superhumanly athletic performance from a physical standpoint, as well.
He has a mic on his neck, which catches a little bit more of the humming. And as RAGE said, if you hum into the sax it sings kinda. Colin is fucking incredible at it
Scream with your throat, he just has a second microphone attached to his neck so 2 sounds play simultaneously from the speaker. The throat scream and the saxophone itself.
