Demolition and removal of existing deck
Straight to the point, no bull shit deck build. Awesome job fellas. I'm really digging the cantilever supports. Definitely adds character to the build.
Thank you!
VERY nice deer stand 👍🏼
nice job on the deck and song. nothing like some zeppelin to brighten the day.
Couldn't agree more! One of the greatest bands of all time!
You did a great job. I wish you every success
Thank you!
Outstanding work my friendos, I only wish the video was half an hour long . Just to see all the details . God bless you all in Jesus name .
Thank you 🙏
Thank you!
Probably should have put footing of concrete Pilar’s on the posts to avoid long term rot. Also should have used higher railing like 42” or 48” cause of the second story. Don’t want it to be lower than your hood. Plus safer if you have children! Nice looking deck !
Sono tube piers above grade with Simposon brackets are a better method that lasts longer. However, it does increase cost significantly. We use 6x6 posts, even buried in the ground, should last 50 years.
Who is this Pilar chick? I didn't see her in the video.
wow beautiful deck
Thank you
Looks great!
Yes the cost is more … but it will not last 50 years. I just removed my old one that was there before mine. 17years. I built up with bags of concrete a 12”x12”x2’6” Pilar. And metal brackets for the 5 6x6 posts I had. Cost. $200. It was worth it.
Led zeppelin? Classy Gabriel, looks phenomenal
I love the Battle of Evermore! Thank you!
Gonna copy your design that's how I picture it in my head for my house
Fuck yeah that was so sick
Thank you!
👏
Great video what were your time lapse settings?
Nice
Thanks
Beautiful job. Only three ties for the ledger? How are the posts supported?
The ledger has 5" "Ledgerlok" bolts every 16". Code only calls for 2 ties. We chose to use 3. Posts are sitting on mixed and poured concrete footers 42 inches deep, 16" wide, 120lbs of concrete per hole.
Probably should have put water proof tape on top of the support beams since they will rot faster with rain coming through space of composite decking. Hate seeing hard not have longevity but it looks good.
We offer joist tape as an add-on. If a customer desires it, we install it. I've heard counter arguments that joist tape can trap moisture in the wood.
Can you please tell us more about sub frame and joist size you used
Cool video. Felt sorry for the band that did the music... sounded like they were being tortured.

It looks like you cut back a cantilever. What exactly did you attach to the floor joists to support the ledger and what is the ledger screwed to? I have a cantilever problem at my house and I thought what you did here wasn't possible?
Great question. I cut the joists flush with the house, added blocking between joists where necessary, and used DTT2Z hangers to provide lateral load from the floor joists inside the house to the deck joists.
@@deckbydesignl.l.c5091 This is great. I have the exact same situation on my house. I need to tear down the existing cantilever, but don't know if I should use the existing cantilever joists and bolts on new joists parallel with it (with footings underneath that area, OR if I should do what you did and flush it all. But then do I attached a NEW ledger board after flushing the house joists? Anyways, great job, and thanks for this example!
great job! what's the weight limit on a deck like that? also what would you say is an appropriate estimate?
In order to pass code, decks typically have to have at least a 40 pounds per sq.ft. live load. So, maybe 10k pounds total. Definitely wouldn't put a hot tub on it!
At 0:20, what are the 3 sections that have something sticking out? what are these things anchored to and what is their purpose? Great deck!!
Great question! Those are deck tension ties. They anchor the new deck joists to the existing floor joists of the house to create lateral support.
I have a crazy question the ledger board and footing how do you determine there heights
We use a level laser to get a level plane. From that level plane, we measure up to the door. We then determine what elevation the top of the deck will be. In this video, the deck was right under the patio door. So we subtract 1 1/16" to account for the width of the decking and flashing. That's the top of the ledger board. Then, we subtract the width of the joist to get to the top of the beam. Then, we subtract the width of the beam to get to the bottom of the notch of the 6x6 post! If you don't have a laser, you can use a stringline level, but it's not as accurate.
Where is your flashing coming from under your siding? Going over your ledger board and between your deck Joyce as is code.
Yes. We put house tape behind the ledger. Then, once the frame is up, we put vinyl flashing on top of the ledger under the siding.
Why are there no emergency egress stairs on that deck
The customer didn't want to invest the extra money for steps and a landing, and the city doesn't require there to be any.
@@deckbydesignl.l.c5091 And it may not be required anywhere else. Lol. People get confused about Dwelling regulations. Thanks for sharing, from SoCal.
How long did it take?
I honestly can not remember.
How much does that usually cost?
We design the decks using 3D models, then we create architectural plans, then we create a comprehensive material list, then we have our lumber company bid that material for us. We take our material cost and add it to our man hours, overhead, and profit. We bid each project accordingly. Composite decks are typically 50.00 to 100.00 per square foot. Some are more, some are less. It really depends on the design and material choice.

Reach out to me and I can make a 3D model for you. We charge per model based on size and complexity.
What is the joist spacing
16" o.c.
How the HELL did you get permission to use this song? (It goes perfectly, but I wanna know, lol.)
I juat played the song. I hope it's not a copyright issue. I never claimed to own the song or the rights to it.
@@deckbydesignl.l.c5091 I think it may be one. I'd check for sure.
And for only the price of a swimming pool...
Have fun replacing those poles in a few years since you put them in the dirt.
Yeah, I imagine in about 50 years, these 6x6 posts may have to be replaced. Then again, so will the entire deck. Here in Ohio, code doesn't call for sonotube poured footers. If the home owners want to invest way more money into their decks, we can always use sonotubes, concrete, and simpson brackets. But why spend all that extra money for a deck frame that will only last 30 years anyway? Pine frames rot over time, and there is nothing you can do about it.
Well said.
A ledger board on a house should be only for stability, never for structural integrity. I, in the old days would build decks like that, now I have bearing posts two or three feet from the structure. Also I like to make the bearing posts be the railing posts.
While I do agree that free-standing decks are always going to be stronger, I disagree with the statement that you can not ledger a deck to a home. As long as the ledger is done properly, it is a safe and sturdy way to build a deck.
@@deckbydesignl.l.c5091 I agree. I am just saying that I do not build decks like that anymore. Why tempt fate.
why all the ff
I'm not sure what you are asking?
