Shittiest paint I've ever worked on so many different thickness readings on a brandnew model X door jambs had very minimal paint you almost see the base coat and at the door hinges it was all white base coat and imagine it being a red car. Then only opened the doors to find somany already broken brittle plastic trims ie. Around the bottom of the seats
I bought a new car recently and I'm so glad I asked not to prep the car. Beyond having the satisfaction of taking off all the plastics and protectors, when I went to the dealership the cars we're really dirty from the transportation and I saw the guy 'washing' the other car with a quick detailer. I washed mine carefully and did not find any imperfections!
This is a great video, great inspection for us consumers: Don’t get details from dealers Bring an LED light to the dealership and scope out flaws Understand both exterior and interior flaws Negotiate Wow, the fabric, the trim and the scuffs? Brand new vehicle? That’s pretty insane!! Good video 😢
Pretty normal actually, in the new taycan we had lots of panel gap issues. The e tron has issues with the speakers in the a pillar. They sometimes look like they are falling off. So it is pretty common for cars to be produced like this. Usually the dealer will take care of this. Oh and btw, the dealer never details the car. Every bmw, audi, vw, Porsche, mercedes etc. Car dealer brings them to a local detailer.
I thought Tesla didnt do negotiation pretty much? No matter what you say the price is the price or else just don't buy it. That might just be because I never bought a Tesla that I dont know how it's really done though.. I also agree that lots of cars have those outside marks, but I think the inside here looked pretty bad honestly.. I think thats pretty common for the first 1000-2000 or so teslas of each production line though and after that they seem to get it better over time. (not talking about alignment or dust in the paint now but rather big flaws in the interior).
Dude that is one car. Btw I am from germany. I live between Ingolstadt (Audi HQ) and Munich (BMW HQ) and daily drive a BMW, but these things are common. The new Porsche Taycan has issues like this (180k car) and the Audi e-tron as well. The speaker in the a pillar was not fitting properly and was looking like it was falling out. So yeah
I feel you, just spent 20 hour correcting a Tesla Model 3, were the dealership tried to get rid of the adheisive residue with a rotary. My good it looked awful... the owner was shoked! There is also missing Base-Coat on several parts of the car (hood, fender, trunk), and i also found 2 Dustnibbs. If I would order a car by myself, I would take it completly covered in the protective plastics and unwrap it myself. The amount of work I had das unbelivable. First when I wanted to pickup the car with the customer, they didn't want to hand over the car to the customer, because they saw that I carried an inspection light on me :D If you pickup a Tesla, bring a small LED light.
I notice some car manufacturers truck their cars about with lots of white or blue plastic wrap. On JLR cars we receive them with a lot of this covering on the body and even foam inlays/panels covering the interior pieces like door cards and centre consoles. All to protect the paint, leather etc before the customer gets it.
The exterior is about what I expected, the interior is unforgivable... my Model 3 has an excellent interior. I'm surprised they have those QC issues on the Y.
Tesla will usually correct those issues - problem is that after you take the car in to get the issues confirmed, it takes months and months before anything more happens.
I don’t understand Tesla of all companies doesn’t have car covers for transportation to prevent rock chips and such. My tesla model 3 was embarrassing w 10 plus issues inside and out and I had to return it. Very bummed

I 100% agree, when a vehicle leaves the factory it can come with some paint defects. Also at a car dealership the personnel that work in the washbay sometimes won't care about the way a car looks because they just want to get paid. It's sad people just don't care about cars these days.
Kyle Nicholas ; If you were one of those people making $15.00/hour how much would you care? They are not high end professional detailers. They are grunts who work in the back at a car dealership cleaning up Chevy’s. 98% of the clientele don’t know a nib from a bib. Nor do they care. Oh look Harold they washed our Traverse for us. Isn’t that nice of them? Most people don’t even wash their car...ever. They were told that with today’s clear coat paints you don’t even have to wash your car anymore. Magic! I’ll just use a little of this waterless wash in a bottle I saw on FB and it’s got 2K five star reviews on Amazon. How can I go wrong?
My Model 3 doesn't have any of these issues, but it had a big scrape on the front bumper which they replaced completely after a couple months. The problem is states are very restrictive because Tesla doesn't play the dealership game. They have to truck these things around quite a bit and they sometimes get beat up.
I work for Honda R&D and we had 2 Tesla’s which we inspected. It was so bad we couldn’t believe it left the factory.. panel fitment is a real issue with them.
This has been Teslas problem since day one. The have to go faster than they can go to stay afloat, and they sacrifice on detailing, build quality and finish. No matter how much of a fan you are, you have to recognize its ridiculous to have these problems on a car that costs 70k. All its plussides don't excuse the fact that a 25k Kia has better quality... Upping the price from 70 to 75k doesn't fix anything. They simply don't have the time or capacity to finish these cars properly. They have to be pushed out asap in order for the company not to go bankrupt
Please do one of these videos on some of tesla's competitors, like the taycan,im having same issues with my taycan and can you please show the taycan's paint issue aswell thank you.
You just saved me a huge potential frustration. I really hoped they stepped up their build quality, so no Tesla here. Going for Audi E-tron because of the cool rearlight

Cars are going to get dirty, scratched, dented....You can’t keep a daily driven car perfect. You can keep it nice but don’t make yourself sick with the auto detailing people. Have Fun!
Yeah, I have to agree with you. You can work forever and make your car look perfect, but you also have to drive it. Once you start driving you start getting things on your car that damage it and ruin your hard work. So my thing is -- as long as the paint protects the car from rust, I'm good.

I work at a body shop, we specialize in Tesla. We get multiple Teslas in with missing screws and missing clips ALL. THE. TIME. They’re assembly line must not be the best
It's my opinion that any Tesla these day especially the 1st batch should get the paint refinished. That means buffing and sanding off part of the top coat in some area and then having another layer of top coat over and then finish it. Some people are reporting orange peel on the paint that is unacceptable for car at this price level. The total cost of doing this can easily add another $2000.
I have owned several new cars and NONE of them have had any build quality issues like these, panel misalignment or paint defects. VW Golf GTi mk4 BMW 320ci VW Golf GTi MK6 BMW520d Audi TT The TT had a slight dull spot but polished right out.
So sad to see that they can't get a handle on these things from the factory, my Model 3 had some issues to, but to Tesla's credit they fixed it all with no issue.
I have a question for you. Wanted to know if you have seen this issue. I received my Tesla Model Y. White. Around the edge of both headlights in the corner the paint is missing. Almost like it wasn't painted all the way to the edge. The head lights don't cover it. So, it does stand out. Is this something that can be touched up or does the bumper have to be repainted. Like your input. Thank you.

I've never inspected Tesla paint closely myself, but have noticed so many Tesla owners getting their cars repainted and filmed. Is their factory paint that bad?
I was hoping Tesla had finally figured out the paint on the cars, guess not. I rejected my first Model 3 based on the paint, the 2nd had a few very minor issues. I was thinking about a Y, but will give them time, who knows maybe they will figure it out...I doubt it.
Forget the scratches. I'd be fuming if my brand new $60K+ car had all those panel gaps and interior defects. I guess Tesla still does not have it right with the Model Y.
How much of an "issue" should someone make about these when buying a new vehicle? Since obviously this is an additional incurred cost, I believe a dealership (not Tesla obviously) should negotiate a bit on price on this...?
if the car i snot washed how can they drive it? i have gotten cars to get ready for use and they have vax all over, a thick coat that make the windscreen impassible to look thru. and grease markers all over. numbers and letters all over the windscreen. some times we found the remains of the lush from the workers etc. tools forgotten in the car ++ it have papers glued to the windows with factory info. import routs etc. so you need "some preparation" befor you get it.
Well I just stick to old cars (1970-1990) that are already scratched and dinged, because I love old cars. Some of mine look pretty clean for their age, but they're not perfect so I don't have to worry that much about them. I can't imagine buying a new car and finding imperfections on it, even though they're somewhat normal because nothing is perfect.
Iam a german and I demand that the Teslas that will be produced in the new facility here get a good qulaity management going. Yes german cars arent always flawless either but how hard can it be to paint a car properly and manage some panel gaps?
This is what worries me about Tesla. I test drove a M3 last month and it just does not feel like a quality car. On another Channel (Fully Charged) the presenter was reviewing his own M3 and said that he was totally unconcerned by panel gaps, didn't worry him at all. But he's wrong. If things like panel gaps are way off what does it say about the rest of the car, especially what you can't see? Just not acceptable.
I’m in Chicago and I am wondering if this is out of the Lombard or glen view location. I will be picking up a new car soon and would like to bring it in for a few services.
Great instructional video. Most people are so caught up in taking possession of their new car, they don't look closely enough. This car is expensive, and I'm honestly shocked the Tesla dealers let it ouf their show room with the defects in the body (seats not going down, broken seat back -used headrest and cut in the plastic. Really pathetic. I want one of these cars and when I do get one, I'll be going over it with a fine tooth comb before I drive it away. Great point about not washing it.

Your comments and observations regarding Tesla paint quality are very accurate. When I was an estimator at Tesla approved body shop we were picking up so many defects that it was unbelievable. We marked up one new silver S so much it looked like a leopard. Sometime it appears their robot paint machines were dramatically out of sync as to be laughable! probably very similar in quality. but since its fun to hate on Tesla, they made this video.
When I was going to purchased a Lexus ES 3 years ago, there were dents in the chrome, the paint was peeling around the door and trunk seals and a whole bunch of small scratches in the paint.
This isn't a Tesla problem, every car company has this problem.
@@zacharyking6171 Yea I was thinking the same although the peeling paint issue seems excessive. Although, I know a ton of American cars that have that problem.
@@zacharyking6171 no in no way did he ,,hate,, Tesla. In general a golf has better quality control than Tesla does, at least the European ones. You guys often seem to get worse cars with the same badge over there. Of course as he said you can't expect the paintwork to be absolutely flawless, but I have never seen a car being delivered to the customer here, with the interior looking like this Tesla's did. I have as of yet not encountered peeling paint, the amount of dust nibs I can't judge, as I have never looked for them. Every other Brand at least gets their car to work when it's being delivered
The paint on the corner of the hood you showed and some of the interior defects are unacceptable for a $20k car, and this cost 3x that probably.
That $20k still spews brain destroying exhaust particulates, and has to be fueled with a corrosive substance that emits brain damaging fumes. Maybe there's more to consider here than just paint?

I bought a new car recently and I'm so glad I asked not to prep the car. Beyond having the satisfaction of taking off all the plastics and protectors, when I went to the dealership the cars we're really dirty from the transportation and I saw the guy 'washing' the other car with a quick detailer. I washed mine carefully and did not find any imperfections!
Yes, you saved your self a lot of money and time.
This is a great video, great inspection for us consumers:
Don’t get details from dealers
Bring an LED light to the dealership and scope out flaws
Understand both exterior and interior flaws
Negotiate
Wow, the fabric, the trim and the scuffs?
Made in the U.S.A ! What do you expect?!
Dude that is one car.
Btw I am from germany. I live between Ingolstadt (Audi HQ) and Munich (BMW HQ) and daily drive a BMW, but these things are common.
I'd be pissed
The dust under the paint is unforgivable imho.
Tesla is notorious for poor quality yet Tesla owners seem to be willing to continue taking it in the backside.
Most paint is applied by robots these days on most cars, what do you expect.
Andre Rodriguez I expect the seats in my 50k car to fucking work lol.
Wow I’m shocked with all the defects
I notice some car manufacturers truck their cars about with lots of white or blue plastic wrap. On JLR cars we receive them with a lot of this covering on the body and even foam inlays/panels covering the interior pieces like door cards and centre consoles. All to protect the paint, leather etc before the customer gets it.
Those can be fixed with an in app purchase
So the paint issues are really bad (peeling paint, really?) but the interior issues are, imo, worse. Especially for a car in that price range.
Tesla’s motto: “We don’t have time to do it right, but have time to do it twice “ 😜
The exterior is about what I expected, the interior is unforgivable... my Model 3 has an excellent interior. I'm surprised they have those QC issues on the Y.

My Model 3 doesn't have any of these issues, but it had a big scrape on the front bumper which they replaced completely after a couple months.
The problem is states are very restrictive because Tesla doesn't play the dealership game. They have to truck these things around quite a bit and they sometimes get beat up.

Yeah, I have to agree with you. You can work forever and make your car look perfect, but you also have to drive it. Once you start driving you start getting things on your car that damage it and ruin your hard work. So my thing is -- as long as the paint protects the car from rust, I'm good.

Lots of new Ferraris have/had problems as well. Sanding marks and overspray. So in that light it's not THAT bad.

Tesla have same quality control as Yugo back in the day, but Yugo was 4000$ so you didn't expect much.
Well, depends on how long you will own a car. After a few years, Teslas will have massive rust problems in colder areas.
