Hi--I really enjoy your virtual trips. My husband I used to travel in a class A motorhome--I was always holding the video camera to my eye-- Some of your visits bring memories--others like Horse Shoe bend are new to me. Thanks so much for sharing. Brings many good memories. Plus, I do not handle heat well- so thank you for "taking the heat" for me! Ha!!

    9:44 Hey, it's Dusty Nuggett's second-cousin, Krusty.
Were those two women getting nervous that some stranger with a camera was following them on the trail, Russ? Just kidding!
Pretty remarkable to think that just the right section of the rock was hard enough to prevent the river from simply blasting its way straight through, the Colorado being forced instead into the horseshoe configuration. Thanks for putting up with the heat, Russ, in bringing this natural gem to us armchair viewers, it is much appreciated.

As others have said, the experience used to be VERY different. In 2018 there was no sign by the highway, no entrance station, and no fee. There was no pavement, just a gravel road from the highway to a dirt/gravel parking lot. The only amenities were a few trash cans and five vault toilets. Sometimes the lot was packed full and people parked on the edge of the highway (dangerous).
From the parking lot the trail went straight up and over the hill rather than around it and in places was sandy or rough---impossible for wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches. The return hike over the hill was not fun.
What you show is a vast improvement, long overdue and worth every penny of the $10 fee. July is too hot: March or April is much better. But what a view! Stay safe!

To me views like that are more impressive than the Grand Canyon. It would be fabulous to go around that bend in a boat or canoe.

Thanks again for taking to see this. Awesome. My pop has one of those 4 wheel scooters that comes apart into 4 pieces and maybe the battery to. Its meant to be taken apart and placed in the back of the car. Does not take up but about 1/3 or less of trunk. It can go 9 to 10 miles on a charge. Till I saw that lady on your path I never gave those things a second thought. WELL I thought about it now and when I go on about seeing the country again soon I'll be thinking about taking the scooter along for the ride. Sure would make a excursion like today a lot more comfortable and maybe feel cooler with feeling the breeze. Used these things are almost being given away.
Anyway, the shotgun cam had it's place. I really like where your driving cam sits behind the wheel, but when you popped up the shotgun cam it made me feel that I was sitting inside like I wanted with dash and cameras in my view. My thinking was shotgun cam was not meant to replace driving cam but rather to expand the experience by letting us be behind the scenes a bit more. Maybe put a water bottle in the view along with dash and camera would help build the set or scene a bit. All that and a bag of chips and I would feel I am right there if only for 15 seconds.... grin
Your doing just fine Russ no matter what you are doing. So have fun, I think I will miss hearing you say "shotgun" ;)

We did horseshoe bend in 2017, you got lucky waiting! It didn’t have those paths it was a brutal up and down climb on sinking sand it almost killed me haha. There was no viewing area with fencing, I’m guessing they now charge because of the construction. Still as beautiful as ever.

  • @christopherbuckley94

A few years back, that was free but you had to climb that sandy slope right in the beginning and your shoes would get filled with sand. I think the improvements are worth the $10. Best to go sunrise or sunset when it's cooler and wear a hat! Happy travels!

They were building the new plaza when we were there. Had to park a few miles down the road and take the bus up there. Remember the driver saying "Be careful when we get there. It is 3000(?) feet to the bottom if you fall. There will not be a rescue operation; it will be a recovery operation". Got most every bodies attention pretty quick.
