Thank you brother so much for doing an episode on this. Very few people were executed in the inquisition . I had read this book about 20 years ago in similar books. And I remember this author got criticized by the Academy because of it. Because he didn’t push the black legend anymore and he actually put historiography in front of ideology
It makes sense that the monarchy would set up these tribunals after their history with the Muslims and Jews. And they did give them the option to leave or to save their souls and convert. That was true ecumenism as you say. "The catholic church is the true church. come to us."
My late uncle, a Catholic priest. pointed out to me a study done in Spain when they unearthed a hidden trove of documents. Catholic, Protestant, and Agnostic scholars formed a team to investigate the documents which showed that the Inquisition in Spain, from 1500 - 1599, executed 45-50 people in the entire century. However, because the Catholic church at the time was headed by scholars, (the Catholic church created the institution of the "Universities") they never prosecuted a charge of witchcraft which was used by people to get their enemies executed. One person could bare false witness in the secular courts and a person might be found guilty of witchcraft and executed. I bring that up because the secular and Protestant courts and judges executed, from 1500 - 1850, just over 150,000 people on the charge of witchcraft alone.
This goes back to the episodes you talked about protestants and catholic governments killing each other that faith and treason were intertwined intimately
I'm getting that Kamen book today! I have been wanting to read up on spanish history since my family is originally from there and you have pushed me to learn more about our faith
I think it’s smart for any Catholics who care about their faith to investigate Catholic theology and history of Christianity from Catholic sources. That should be your first area. And then if you wanna read protestant or atheist or “scholarly” treatment of it then do so after you read the Catholic ones first.
So Kamen is a Jew exonerating how the spanish inquisition actually didn't have jurisdiction over Jews and not only that kicked out the jews of spanish territory and he STILL wrote an honest assessment of it. Wow! He must not have gotten a lot of love from "The tribe." lol
All societies had this, going back to primitive era. The major religion trying to keep its faith clean from heterodox thinking for the sake of the people. protestants societies did this too
Here is another tip: As far as I know, the inquisition could not try indigenous americans. They were protected. The nobility of the natives were recognized in the same level as the spanish nobility and during the independence Wars in Hispanic America almost all the royalist armies and officers were natives who were deeply Catholic. Even Túpac Amaru II was profoundly Catholic.
Its really interesting to hear this historical perspective. However, i wonder if pushing out Jews is the best approach for the long term. Jews specifically have a special relationship with God, i think about the woman who begged Jesus for bread crumbs. As Catholics, we are blessed to have recourse to Jesus and should share it with Jewish brothers and sisters who have ears to hear.
The exaggeration was on purpose . Then it was and today it still is. Bashing the Catholic Church HAS to continue as far as the protestants are concerned , if not , protestants might convert to the Church Christ instituted and that would be dramatic!
Thanks for posting below, brothers and sister in Christ.
I know nothing about history. Thanks for making me smarter and helping me defend the faith when my lapsed family members bring this up
helps me too
