Brilliant. I just sent my old Canon 5DmkII for a 590nm conversion. Everything I shoot is edited first in LR Classic before any masking edits in Photoshop. I’ll be downloading your profiles and studying your videos in great detail.
Rob! What a wonderfully informative and well-presented video! Thank you! Quick question: I'm new to IR photography. I have converted a Fujifilm X-T20 (720) and plan to typically only create black and white images. Do I need to this color swap thing?
Color swap profiles are only used for color IR images, they are not required for monochrome images. You can simple select any Black and White profile for the image. In LR, you have Adobe Monochrome and a variety of profiles in the B&W profile group.
Hey brother just ordered it now I did get back to my house and hopefully upload it thanks so much for all you do I’m keeping my fingers crossed because I’m technically technology illiterate LOL and I’ve been having trouble when I go to do a color swap of a bringing out any color themes that 95 9067% of my photos are mostly come out with no color by do the color swap so I got a figure way out how to maintain the color so I can make him as a little different from black-and-white to my black and white boat oh sorry I’m talking to my phone as I’m driving
Hi Rob. When I first loaded the colour swap profiles I was finding when white balancing, the white balance was invariably right on the 2000K end with the pic still looking a touch cool, so not getting enough adjustment (albeit fairly close). I've found that if I create the profile within CameraRaw and at this point set it include the camera profile under the various 'Current image settings to include' options (having loaded the -50 or -100 version as apt under the adjustment settings before creating the profile), and of course setting the desired .cube file at the bottom of the create profile options. Then obviously create the rest of profiles from the apt camera profile/.cube file combos. This seems to give the right end result i.e. RAW files that white balance with adjustment to spare, but is this the correct way to create the colour swap profiles? Just want to be sure I'm not missing something!
@@robshea Ah great, proof that trial error can triumph over ignorance (just takes longer!). Is the colour space setting critical, I left that at the default sRGB? Many thanks!
Hi Rob, Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise in such an interesting and concise way. I'm just about to start my journey in IR photography with converting an XE1 camera to IR. My question to you is this,. What would you suggest gives me the most flexibility ie having the camera converted to 720 ir or converted to be set up for colour swapping? In a way I'm asking can a colour conversion produce similar results to the BnW 720 ir version. I hope my question makes sense and isn't too naive. Best wishes from Wales (UK) Paul h
720 nm is a fine choice for conversion, but it will not give the most flexibility. With a 720 nm conversion, you can shoot 720 nm or add a higher numbered high-pass filter, such as 830 nm. You cannot add a lower-numbered filter, such as a 590 nm. A 590 nm conversion is more flexible, as it allows for 590 nm, 720 nm (with external filter), and 830 nm (with external filter). A full spectrum conversion is even more flexible, as it supports all styles and filters but essentially requires an external filter to be useful. I'm a fan of the 590 nm conversion since I can shoot without an external filter, or add a 720 or 830 nm external filter. There is no right or wrong answer here. If you prefer the more subtle colors of the 720 nm, then go that route.
What a great video. I just got a camera modified by LifePixel and I’m struggling with how to create a camera specific profile and save it in the right place and then use it. Does your book explain this process?
Hey Rob! I just purchased the color swap profile set. The email I used in my order is different than the one that auto populated in the form I filled out with my camera type. They both get back to me equally, just wanted you to be aware. Thanks!! Lindsey
Interesting video. This makes me want to try out lightroom more. I've always just used Photoshop, but recently upgraded my old version to a subscription plan, so now i got lightroom as well. Is it possible to easily switch between the 2 programs with these colour swap functions? Because sometimes i do some more targeted editing and with some images i like to add a 'blend if' vignette. From what i understand that's not possible in lightroom
The programs are very interoperable, but they certainly each have their strengths and weaknesses. I find that it's better to establish a clear workflow, so that you reduce the amount of bouncing back and forth between the two. For example, I prefer to do as much as I can in LR (WB, color swap, basic adjustments, local adjustment) before moving to PS to do more refined work (healing brush, luminosity masks, layer blending, etc.) In LR, you are making non-destructive edits over the raw file. From LR, editing in PS as a Smart Object, will preserve some of the raw control into PS. Once in PS, you are making destructive edits and the results are saved as a TIF or PSD. LR will be able to open the TIF/PSD and make additional changes. Once returning the LR, I prefer to minimize changes, unless they are for printing.
Hi Rob, Your instructions in your book for creating DNG Profiles, LUTs and Enhanced Profiles have been invaluable - thanks. I have however found a problem with the Invert method with one converted camera. I have created Enhanced Profiles and they all work perfectly in LR and Camera Raw except for Invert. I have a converted Lumix GH3. All images are 16bit but Invert shows poor colour and green/blue banding in the skies. I have used the same image in PS and confirmed that Invert just does not produce decent results. I also have a converted Lumix GX1 and that works perfectly with Invert. I can only conclude that there is some significant difference in the way the sensors are acting. Is this something that you have experienced? Would it be worth mentioning in a video? Apologies if you have covered this elsewhere and I have missed it. Best wishes Peter
@@robshea Thanks Rob but I think I have found the problem. There was something wrong with my Invert.CUBE file. I am not sure how what went wrong with this. It's an easy enough process but maybe I lost concentration! I realised I had used a different Invert.CUBE for the GH3. I redid that and all now works fine. I'm now looking forward to the print version of the book. Thanks again. I can send you the Profiles -50 and -100 for the Lumix GH3 and GX1 if you would like them or DNG files if you prefer.

Rob, do these color swaps work if shooting with an iPhone? If so, am I restricted as to which camera I can use on the phone? Lastly, in the field how do I get the correct white balance? I have all the profiles you made for the iPhone installed in Lightroom and would love the color swap. Thank you
They do work, but with the two iPhones I’ve tested, there was not much color and I process as monochrome. If you are getting some color after a white balance, then they would be worthwhile.
@@robshea I have a 720 and 560 filter, what do I shoot to get the right white balance. I’m just starting out shooting infrared so I don’t know what to do?
@@sandykreit1752 Since the iPhone is an unconverted camera, you must use the 720 nm filter. Filters with a lower-numbered cut-off will allow too much visible light into the image and make it impossible to get a good white balance.
