Changing turnbuckle mounting locations will raise/lower your roll center. I run clay oval so i play around with roll centers more than someone who races similar to yourself. Raising the camber link on the chassis lowers your roll center and causes that shock/spring to act stiffer than what it really is making your car more stable and seem stiffer, vice versa lowering the camberlink on the chassis raises your roll center and causes the shock/spring to act softer than what it really is making your car softer and in my case roll over on the RF faster and easier giving me more bite off the LR
As a new X-4 driver was using the Dakota setup and doing horribly at our local track. So I took a chance last night before today's club race and reset the car to Ryan's setup. The difference was night and day. Far more stable and drivable (at least for me). Still feeling out how hard the car can be driven now, but so far have yet to reach the car's limit. Going to use Ryan's 22 5.0 setup when time come to assemble that car. :) Thanks Ryan. Love the setup and loving the informational videos. It is helping me get back into 1/10 off-road racing after 15 years out of the hobby.
Thanks for sharing these videos and setup tips! I'm a total noob to this and finding these setup and driving tip videos super helpful. You explain everything in a way that is easy to understand with what effects what. Keep up the good work
I really love the share vehicle idea. I started with a slash 2wd and ran that at my track. Built a Tekno SCT 410SL recently and took it to the same track. Struggled a bit with nose diving and asked a guy with experience to drive it for me and see what he thought. Turned out it was a bit of driver error and a bit of suspension setup. He told me what he did while driving to help correct it. Took it out myself and did what he said to do and it worked. Got better but now need to tune the car. Definitely helped knowing it was mostly driver error 😂
i love rewatching to get all the details from your videos. may i suggest some text and graphics around you and your hands? easier for audience to visualise the concepts you are explaining. Im learning a lot from you! Cheers.
I've been racing RC off and on for about a year and people have tried to help me, but I just don't understand. I watched a few videos about the slipper and got a basic understanding, but that's a difficult topic so I'm going to watch more. But to make my job easier I'm making playlist of each topic and after I do that I'll go back through and start taking notes. Learning all this stuff is hard so the playlists are to help other people and make it easier for me to take notes in each category, and the notes are so i understand it, and I can go back to important information later. Anyway... you probably didn't want to read all that and I don't blame you, but I will say I like these videos that don't just tell you HOW to do each thing... but tells you WHY to do each thing and WHAT exactly it is each thing does. So basically... my main point: videos like this help the most, and taking notes (with illustrations...even if they don't look great) will help you learn, understand, and ask questions if you need to.
/sigh I wish the middle east coast had RC tracks. 20 years ago, we had a couple, and I used to race every weekend. Everything is gone now. I really want to do this again. :(
i learned in a few weeks by just watching how the car was moving. im no racer, but if you just watch.. you will learn! watch how the car goes over bumps... does the main car stay level without much movement, or is it all bouncy etc etc
Thanks Ryan for all the R/C content, absolutely love all your videos! Been out of the R/C scene for 20+ years and recently got the bug and I’m back heavier than I’ve ever been. I never raced till now and gotta say I look forward to all your videos. I would love to see a video of your finger work on the remote when running a track. Kinda like a split screen, close up on the remote on one side and track driving on the other. I know it’s all what’s comfortable for your style but your driving and set up are dang close to mine. Keep up the awesome videos! PS don’t apologize for that sweet transition screen, don’t even say your about to do it.....just do it!!
I never feel “dialed” from my own tweaks… sometimes the track comes to me, other times i’m driving the best i can with what i got, but i rarely make a change during the race… tires.. maybe rear ride height if its getting extra slippy
Thanks Ryan, only been racing for one year. Last year learned how to drive with little to no set up changes. This year I've been trying different things. This video gave me some good tips.
Something that I did for "Recon" months ago, aside from scouting the track, and kind of tied into your "Options" tip as well - in my case, I also hit up a tire manufacturer in one of their public Forum threads (since they are the title sponsor for a "Super" series that races a round there every year 😉 ). It was good to know that "tire A" was typically good for an entire club race day, but that you should also have "tire B" on hand for the afternoons on each day at a big event. Once you know what works for one brand, it's convenient that other brands typically have both tread patterns and compounds similar to each other, so it's usually pretty easy to come up with a combo for your brand of choice if you don't see anyone running it. I have not made any allegiances to any tire brand in particular, so my spectrum is wide open, haha. As usual, great tips Ryan!
What a GREAT video! If you want to know what it actually takes to set up a car for speed, this is it. The importance of Recon and asking the fast guys is so underrated - so is the importance of the proper tires.
Great video. The right tires choice indeed makes a huge difference! Then agree, you can make changes but one at a time otherwise it gets confusing... thanks for sharing your tips! 👍
Ryan, recent subscriber but I’ve watched a ton of your videos over the past month or two. Made the decision that I wanted to get into racing RC but was unsure what kit I should buy in order to start. While not the most cost effective solution to get started, I am basically replicating your 4wd Buggy setup. Everything from 22x-4 to the Sanwa M17, only thing I changed was the motor ESC combo to the hobbywing XR10 Pro G2/V10 G3R. I just couldn’t help myself! Thank you for putting all this detailed content out for racers new and old, best RC racing channel out there - awesome production value!! Thanks again , keep it up Ryan!
17:00 if you force people to give you information they will either give you wrong information to send you down the wrong path, or they will just tell you what you want to hear so that you will leave them alone.
Be nice explaining what all the settings do. I.e camber 0 camber gives you the most tyre surface area. Adding camber gives you lest tyre contact area but at the same time gives you more turn in. Toe in also gives you more turn in but you lose straight line stability. You mention shock oils in your video but you don’t need to change them. You can change the thickness of your sway bars. If your car bottoms out ride height is another option, springs too. The first thing is selecting the right tyre. If you car slides does not grip at all it’s just a waste of time trying to adjust the mechanical options. I would love a video explaining the timing options for hobby wing speed controllers. Adjusting these options can help loads. Slipper clutch is another great option to. To much wheel spin when trying to put the power down this can be a great option but you can also fix this with speed controller .. love the videos .. watching from the uk
Hey Ryan, for a newbie, i just wanted to say your videos are amazing. Concise, just the right amount of technical information and well spoken! Thanks from Wales UK!
Amazing video Ryan thanks so much for some brilliant watching! Always top quality video! Thanks bro 🤙🏻 wonder if any other fans are up in Scotland 🏴 🤔
Hi Ryan, how do you properly setup your camber and from toe please ? Do you use 1/10 off road setup tool as Hudy setup? Please advise. It’s quite difficult to setup toe and camber on 1/10 off road without a setup. I am usually used new wheel and tyres. Is it works
This video was very helpful! I bought my first kit and I've never raced any type of RC in my life. Found out there is an indoor carpet track 15 mins from me. I got the Tlr 22 5.0 AC and I have everything ready to go! Cant wait to get on the track for my first time practicing. Thanks for the tips!
Hello Ryan, bravo for your youtube channel and for all the information you put on it, I do not always understand everything because I am French .... Can you tell me which motor pinion I should put for my Schumacher Cat L1 with a motor 13.5 T a spur of 83 teeth. The ratio is 2.45: 1. Thank you . Manu Bafou
Legend has it Ryan Harris wants to race Blooming Prairie RC Park in MN. Very informative video. Million thanks for putting it out there. I will be telling people about this at our driver meeting tomorrow!
Do you have/ notice a correlation between ride height and shock oil? ie: lower ride height, higher shock oil to prevent slapping. I race black carpet, and tend to traction roll coming off this one tabletop into a 180, where i see many cars fully compressed and turn fine. My thought is 1) lwr ride height 2) raise roll center in rear, inner ballstud down. I can also see my inside tire lift when braking hard into a sharp corner from a long straight and sometimes it generates a traction roll. I would just like the rear to slide a bit more when sharp cornering. Another question too: how does diff height effect handling? B6.2 carpet kit has diff at the top, which is strange when you think about cg
Hi Ryan, from Australia. What do you think are the best shocks for the TLR 22 5.0 elite? I have a 22 5.0 elite and have changed from the big bore shocks to the 4.0 ones. Are you still running those anymore? All I’ve noticed is that your shocks seem gold or bronze and have a shorter cap? Thanks and keep up the great work in promoting the hobby.
Hi Ryan, I’m getting back into the hobby after about a 16 year absence. Most of the tracks around me in Minnesota are carpet or Astro. My issue is there is carpet and dirt cars now. I would like to travel Nationally and race both carpet and dirt but don’t want to purchase both cars. What is your opinion on this. Want to have fun but don’t want to break the bank doing it.
hey glad i came across your page lots of good info. So my buddies invited me to come to an indoor track here. They all have the TLR 22 setups, some 2wd some 4wd. I was just curious i can only afford one right now. Most of my RC's i have are 4wd, seem more comfortable that way, but just thought i'd ask what do you think is the best way to go for me.
Heavier shock old slows weight transfer. Tires is the most important thing on the car, inside tracks clay blue groove even more critical. Imo carpet sucks..If your a great driver you adjust your driving to suit the car set up at the time in other words make the best of what you got... it might not be the fastest, but you can make in around the track at a quick pace.. stay close to base line set up. Most buggies are dialed since 2016. 2nd most important thing is driving the car as fast as it will go without crashing. All those tenths you've gained in 5 laps slightly over driving will be lost when you bobble, or ruin you night if you crash. Also people crack in the mains, its important to stay cool under pressure, the pros don't crack, most locals will crack if you stay a couple feet off their bumper in the main they will blow it. If a couple feet won't do it try 6 inches. Practic until you can run 100% speed and 2 inches off the pipe for 10 mins then think of Daisy Duke while racing tell yourself this race is not important. Plus don't let something bad that happened ruin the rest of you day and you'll win a ton of races....
Hey, Ryan. have you ever made use of electronics (accelerometer, gyro, IMU, microcontrollers) to analyze your traction circle after (or during) a run as other motorsports like F1 do? They're used to monitor and analyze grip usage to maximize the utilization of grip. If you haven't, do you know anybody who has? If not, any idea why people aren't doing this at high levels of RC racing?
Thanks bud perfect timing. Doing my first race this weekend. Daytona ovel 10th 13.5 buggy. Can't wait set up going simple. Just want it to stick and I can stay on the gas.
Thanks for the help Ryan, my dad wants me too start doing things on my own with my b6D. I like when you do the videos about tips like this video because it helps me to understand what things do
Hey Ryan can you make a ball stud locations and shims video for you're tlr 2wd I can't single good info on what does what on those things really 😅please help 🙏
Hey Ryan. Question. You didn't talk about tire traction. I don't know if you use it or not or how you apply it or when do you switch compounds. Also do you play with or use sway bars. how do they work?
Dude I love your attitude and personality. Keep it up broski! I'm really sad I don't have any tracks anywhere near me. We used to but not any more. I really miss racing.
Awsome idea with printing off the spec sheet for each race. Im taking that one with me from now on!! I litterally did that last weeknd racing and just couldnt think of what i used a month back. Preciate yuhh ryan!!
Great video! So well laid out and excellent job bridging all the various brands with approaches that apply to all RC. Thanks for putting the time into this!
@Ryan Harris do you live down in Florida? I’m moving down there in a few months, it be Kool to meet up at some tracks n see the Florida track life. I’m from Ny
Most tracks here in UK are shut because of "new normal", may never go back so maybe rc is dying here in UK as no track's will cause shops to close = no shops, no tracks, no tracks, no shops. Spent £5000 maybe more for 2 new cars, 2 older, electrics, spares..... Full hobby setup in February too. Now seems Wasted, lol. I'll keep watching and hope you all have fun. Thanks for awesome content BTW.
I'm really annoyed about RC in the UK. It just seems so dead compared to in the US :/ Just got myself a new 1/8 nitro and having fun bashing but i'd love to race one day.
@@desterse3948 well if the sheep keep doing what they are told there will be no RC racing in UK, take all the fun out of rc and what's left = a dead hobby. I hope people get a grip and ignore all the nonsense but the BRCA is the governing body and like a conditioned lapdog are making Laws for the governments advise and adding there own fun kill rules also....... Hope they happy when they make rc dead in the uk, and their own organisation even too. They need to think!!!
Question, hopefully you can get back to me on. So fairly new to the sport, I am driving fairly well, not perfect as I’m still learning the ropes, but when the car goes into a corner it pushes a lol bit. But if I can use the brake, the ca rotates how it needs to, which is great. BUT, most of the time I touch the brakes and the car whips around on me. Kit setup, moved the battery back one position. High bite clay at Ocrc in Huntington!
Sweet, wasn’t sure if that affected deceleration as much also. That kinda leads me to my next question. Elite comes with 3.5 shocks, willing (local tlr driver) and a lot of other drivers run the 3.0, with the tlr blue lf up front and a associated white in the rear. Is it worthwhile to grab that shock package over the 3.5’s?
Carpet setups will have stiffer springs and heavier shock oils, lower ride heights, higher diff and hub positions, different tires and sometimes extra parts for things like sway bars, chassis braces etc.
I'm totally new when it comes to racing I just started out with one or two cars and then I got bit by the bug and now I need a car for every class if not two or three you make some great videos I've been into RC since I was little kid last five years I've been nothing but crawling I Don't Know Jack squat about dispension tires any of that you videos it's helped me out a bunch of times
Re your description about generating grip or loosing grip with the hub heights - I prefer to think of it as generating grip or exploiting the grip that is available.
Thanks for this man! Im just getting back into RC after a 15ish year break (time to introduce my lil boy to rc racing). I just built a 22 5.0 and 22x4 and was having a bit of anxiety about getting them dialed in, especially since I will be running them on turf and clay. Ive got a better understanding of what each tweak does now. Thanks again!
Hey ryan one thing I struggle with is finding how to improve it, like if the car doesn't have that turning speed u want, would it be set up I would have to change or driven style
Great Video Ryan! I've been following your channel for some time and I love your videos! This one in particular very interesting! The next race I'm sure I'll take your advice! Thank you!!
So on the different tire tread depth (slick, ghosted, full pin) do you have all of those tread depth in each compound? How do you know what tires to get and sand down if you have little or no recon?
My latest setups are the top 2 links in the description!
Thanks mate

I am going to have to watch this about 100 times
Step 7: Come to the States and race with the boys 🍻
Already on #76
I really love the share vehicle idea.
Really well put together, great job
This video helped allot! I have only been into the rc racing for about 6 months.
i love rewatching to get all the details from your videos. may i suggest some text and graphics around you and your hands? easier for audience to visualise the concepts you are explaining. Im learning a lot from you! Cheers.
I've been racing RC off and on for about a year and people have tried to help me, but I just don't understand. Like your RC car rack, where you can hang your RC cars....Are these available for sale somewhere?
Just picked up a B6.3D this weekend and excited to take it to track!:)
Thanks Ryan,a Lot of awsome info I will be taking a lot of it to my rig.
Another solid video! The hobby needs content like this, we appreciate you.

Thanks for doing this video. I’ve been running onroad for years and am trying off-road. Basic tips like this are really helpful
Thanks for the tips Ryan!! Definitely identified some things I need to work on. I’m still learning so these videos are extremely useful for me.
Sick dude! Hope you go faster on race day now!
Ryan, always like watching you explaining different aspects of RC in detail.👍 So, you‘re a helping to grow the RC-community, I think 👌

One that helped me, was get a Pro's set up sheet for your car at a track similar to yours and start there.
This is the video I have been searching for ages. Thx man
Dude I love your attitude and personality.
Ryan you are like Buda talking to us! Great job!
Really like that last tip. Good stuff as always Ryan, keep it up.
Brilliant video mate, thankyou.
It just seems so dead compared to in the US :/
Just got myself a new 1/8 nitro and having fun bashing but i'd love to race one day.
Kaylem very true!
Awesome video, so informative!!! Running 1/10 onroad but all this stuff applies perfectly fine :)
If shock setup feels good jumping/ landing wise, try adding some rear toe with the C/D block pills
*williby* stupid autocorrect.
Hey Ryan, I'm fairly new to the RC hobby and was wondering what is the difference between a Dirt/clay setup vs a Carpet/turf setup?
Carpet setups will have stiffer springs and heavier shock oils, lower ride heights, higher diff and hub positions, different tires and sometimes extra parts for things like sway bars, chassis braces etc.
@@RyanHarrisRC ah that explains alot! Thanks for helping me out there
I'm totally new when it comes to racing I just started out with one or two cars and then I got bit by the bug and now I need a car for every class if not two or three you make some great videos
I've been into RC since I was little kid last five years I've been nothing but crawling I Don't Know Jack squat about dispension tires any of that you videos it's helped me out a bunch of times
Can you clarify what you mean by raising and lowering your hubs. What setting is raised and what setting is lowered?
Re your description about generating grip or loosing grip with the hub heights - I prefer to think of it as generating grip or exploiting the grip that is available.
Hi Ryan. Just out of curiosity. Have you tried something like MIP bypass pistons. I see it's quite common in 1/8. Not sure about 1/10 thus I'm asking.
very good help
Awesome guide Ryan 👌🏼
TIP 4!!! The most important tip. IMHO.
When you change your hub heights, do you also change your ballstud heights at the same time to maintain the same geometry?
Thanks for this man! Im just getting back into RC after a 15ish year break (time to introduce my lil boy to rc racing). I just built a 22 5.0 and 22x4 and was having a bit of anxiety about getting them dialed in, especially since I will be running them on turf and clay. Ive got a better understanding of what each tweak does now. Thanks again!
Top quality as always! Keep em coming!
Great info as usual...being a noob at racing I appreciate this kind of clips a lot!
Best Servo for a team assoicated b6.3d buggy
hi Ryan because of this video i went out and got a losi 22 2wd and love the way it drive but always get tips from your videos
Do you prefer hobbywing speed controllers?
Hey buddy I just stubble upon your channel I'm sub..rn I like your stuff
thanks for wresting with arguable issues and being articulate / T- Bone stone
Right it down!
Hey ryan one thing I struggle with is finding how to improve it, like if the car doesn't have that turning speed u want, would it be set up I would have to change or driven style
Yo ryan
Love the videos man!
Tryed to find the gold parts (exotek?)
But cant find them
Any help pleasssse!
Keep up the good work
Another awesome video Ryan, I really like this one! I wish I could have watched it about a year ago 😁🇺🇲
Have you done any videos on tire inserts what kind to use when and where what kind to use with different kinds of tires on various surfaces
Great Video Ryan! I've been following your channel for some time and I love your videos! This one in particular very interesting! The next race I'm sure I'll take your advice!
Thank you!!
Great information in general great video thankx for your time an information
Hey Rayan!
If you use 35 front and 32 rear oil in shocks, do you use the same pistons in there?
So on the different tire tread depth (slick, ghosted, full pin) do you have all of those tread depth in each compound? How do you know what tires to get and sand down if you have little or no recon?
What weight oils do you use at NewBerry park in your 1/10 4wd associated?
