I just bought the super slim, and I was so afraid of breaking the case too. This is definitely helpful to those of us upgrading from an old model plagued by the YLOD. Thank you!
Yes, you can. I just (literally 5 minutes ago) upgraded my 12gb PS3 with a 320gb hard drive I had lying around. Super easy, took me only a a few minutes. Make sure you get the mounting bracket as indicated in the video's description. I bought the exact same one and it works perfectly.
Hi, I'm glad you like the video! 1. By bracket, I'm assuming you're talking about the metal holster for the HDD. The Super Slim model does need a specific holster which you can find online to buy. 2. When you upgrade the HDD of a PS3, you do want to back up your data. When a new HDD is put into a PS3, the PS3 will reformat the HDD. So you want to get your data off your old one. Then you can restore the data safely on the new one.
I'm thinking of getting a super slim PS3 with the smallest memory, then buy a 1TB hard drive to stick in it and pay the same as what you would get for a 500GB PS3.
You can absolutely do that, just make sure that you back up your data to an external hard drive BEFORE taking your HDD out. When you put the HDD in your new PS3, the new PS3 won't let you use it until you format the HDD. So that way when you format it, you can restore all your data from that external hard drive.
Well, a PS3 using SSD actually doesn't add that much speed/performance. The SSD is definitely faster, but I mean, really you are not going to notice much of a difference when using the traditional HDD. Certain games that have to always read the Blu-ray will load environments quicker, but even then, other games don't have to read the Blu-ray all the time, thus no matter what you're using, it's the same. So I wouldn't worry too much about speed. Glad my video helped!
Just like to point out, if you had trouble opening the slot as i did i used the non knife side of a butter knife against the end closest to the power button and pushed like that came of with a bit of force, nothing to excessive though.
ALL PS3's use a 2.5 inch Hard Drive. That has NEVER changed, however, the caddy's, (The metal holder for the HDD) is different depending on the PS3's. If you search the comments below, I tell others that you can just put the HDD in the Super Slim without the holder, it just wouldn't be stuck in place. Which is easily fixable by using non-static carboard to fill in the open areas.
I mention this right at the end of this video! Don't worry. You can still use your HDD. Just grab Sony's firmware from their website, and put it on a USB Drive or whatever you may have and follow the instructions your PS3 gives you. You can still use your HDD.
The size is 2.5 inch just like all other PS3's. Have you tried looking on Ebay for the right holders? I wouldn't even bother looking for one, you really don't need it. As you can just put non-static cardboard in there to keep the HDD from flailing around.
i upgraded a month ago from 80 to 160 gig so simple. the usb upgrade caught me out though youtube vids i watched never mentioned this, your the 1st ive seen that has so well done on that.
You can, the problem with that though is that whenever a PS3 gets a new HDD put in it, the PS3 cannot use the HDD until it is formatted. So if you want to use your old HDD, you definitely could, you just need to back up your data so you can restore it once it's back in the new PS3.
The side panel that you should remove is on the disc reading side. I wish he would have mentioned that as I almost broke my case trying to pry the case off on the wrong side. Though i am grateful nonetheless that he uploaded a video showing how to change the hdd.
You could just pop in an HDD. The only problem is you don't have that mount/holder for the HDD. I know that some people have just been putting the HDD in, and then filling in the extra space with non-static cardboard and it seems to do the trick. That way the HDD is secure and not flailing around in there.
While doing it that way would be possible, I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have to change your old HDD to an external one, pull all your files off, and then copy them over manually, which sometimes won't work because certain PS3 files need to be transfered via Sony's built in methods. You'd save more time backing up. It's only a few hours. Plus it depends how much data you're really transferring.
1) 500GB is largest recommended, TB's seem unstable (some do/most don't) 2) Yes, as long as you only store content that is not "locked" (DLC, etc.) 3) Can't say for sure as haven't played/tried, but am assuming the 2 networks have no way to "link" to each other (haven't heard of a single instance yet, at least). Hope that's a good set of answers for you/sorry if not.
What's the name of metal that hold hdd cause i got ps3 with no hdd and metal thing that hold it inside. If we buy hdd internal does they usually give that metal thing or we need to buy separately? Tq
Pretty much. I'm sure there's some random ass HDD that is perhaps by a different brand that might not work. But if you're going with trustable brands, they'll basically all work.
No, it should prompt you to format it once it's in/system's 1st turned on. If you format it beforehand, it may still give this prompt (as only the original HDD provided w system doesn't/ie, another PS3 drive already formatted can't just be "slipped in" & have onboard data/saves be used-it'll give you the prompt even if it's fresh out of a working system).
Exact same process as this, but the 12GB model doesn't come with the HDD bracket. You could probably DIY it, with some foam padding maybe, to make it secure. I just bought the bracket though, in the UK it sells for £8. Maybe a little much for a bit of metal and some screws, but I thought I may as well get it for peace of mind.
You do know that YLOD was happening to people who were using normal Sony-provided HDDs right? In a well ventillated, cool area the supposed overheating issue you are bringing up does not exist. My Ps3 is about 4 feet from the vent and my g/f always runs the AC so that area of the room hovers around 60 degrees Farenheit and plenty of airflow. At any rate I decided not to put the 7200 in because I did not feel like re-downloading a bunch of games I got digitally.
Okay so, if i install the new HDD to my PS3 super slim do i need to make a back up of the system? I've read that the back up need's to be done in older versions of the ps3 but not in the super slim version.
You can find USB-SATA rigs to turn a drive into a "slave" drive (usually does SATA-IDE, as well). DL the FAT 32 prog/install, plug said rig into USB/hook up to removed SATA drive to the fitting & it should go. "Locked" content won't go, though.
if you cant get the cover to come off check your model number it may not be the same. Mine was a tab on the bottom i had to pop off and the screw and hard drive are located there
I bought this PS3, love it so far...i wanted to upgrade to a 1TB HDD from my older slim, but i was unable to remove 3 out of the 4 screws and ended up completely fudging it up i cant remove them, the grooves are completely gone...any tips?? thank you!
yes you can use your old hdd, however you'll need the bracket to mount the hdd to. the 12gb ps3 system DOES NOT come with this bracket, I got it off of amazon for 12 bucks
Pretty sure it's a 2.5. TB HD's are apparently hit & miss, with some saying it works/others saying it doesn't. The largest "safe" size SONY rep's will advise is 500GB. (Apparently it needs to use something called a "500 Kb-block system" {can't re exact wording} in the HD, which may be the cause of some of the TB failures). Hope that helps! (you can also try an external USB for save data, etc as long as is not "locked" content but again some ext drives have power/operating issues so not all work)
Mystic, I have the slim PS3 CECH2001A Version 4.82. I wanted to know if I could open the top of the PS3 slim to use a compressed can of air to remove all dust bunnies. What tools would I need?
Thanks a bunch for the video! I was getting upset because the only videos I can find are ones that show you how to install the HDD, but not formatting the system once it is turned on. I am used to updating pcs/laptops and I know once you insert a new HDD there is a whole other process to go through haha. Infinite thank yous.
Tough call. The 12 gig doesn't come with a caddy for the HDD, so you gotta get your own metal bracket, and they're crap (it's a downgrade to cut production costs while they wait to churn out the PS4). Bought my 250G March 20 2013 & malfunctioning already, overheat/shutdown etc.
I just got a used PS3 Super Slim. While it only has 12GB of flash storage, I heard Super Slims always use SATA III (not SATA II). Without searching online, what's the largest hard drive size this console recognizes? I've heard 1.5TB, but has anyone successfully used a bigger one? I can't find a clear answer anywhere. I'm looking for someone who has tried a really big drive.
THAT is really very interesting...to be honest I didn't look extremely deep into 1TB workarounds (seems to get sketchy/complicated in that pond). Very useful info-I'll have to check that out (what type of HDD did you use? Replication goes best following exact success). I've heard SSD's help cut load time/FPS rate (esp'ly on Skyrim/other such "laggy" games). Thank you very much for sharing that (any noticeable performance/load time boost at all? Just curious...)
what are the exact hdd that I need for my ps3 ? it is the bigger version 80gb is the hdd's the same as the slim. I tryed to replace the 80gb with and it did not work, I fallowed a tutorial on YT got the same hdd that they recommended but it did not work
So i have a 40GB model PS3 Super Fat since it was released, it got the yellow light of death about a month ago. If i get the new Super Slim, I can install my 40GB HDD from the original PS3 into this 1 & it should work fine?
If i were to get a hard drive with the sony firmware update installed, would i be able to avoid downloading the update on USB from playstation web site. Will it pretty much be plug and play?
(but you would likely want to add the 80GB files via said USB "slave" rig 1st, THEN do the slim-superslim transfer utility-as it overwrites the drive it's landing in, so you can't "stack" it in &'ll regret it if you try...alternatively you could try the transfer then the "slave" on superslim, but likely the slim files are more recent/up-to-date)
Just about any USB storage device will work, but hard drives need to be formatted FAT32 instead of NTFS (which is the default format for most USB HDDs unless they are specifically made for Macs, which use HFS/HFS Plus). However, on Windows XP and higher, the built-in formatter only supports formatting FAT32 partitions up to 32GB. If you need a larger FAT32 partition, you need a third party formatting utility or, oddly enough, a Mac (the "MS-DOS' option in Disk Utiltiy on Mac is FAT32)..
sorry for the noob questions, but since the only PS i ever owned was the original, and am looking at getting back into console games, 1: how big of a HDD can you use on the USB slots 2: can you use said HDD as a temp upgrade instead of exchanging internal HDD? 3: do you know if Dead Island Riptide will allow cross system play, eg me on PS3, friend on xbox?
Hi if i change the Hard drive can i jailbreak the super slim because now i can't jailbreak so i thought if i change the harddrive maybe that would work?
hi i was wondering i planing on getting a new ps3 the super slim version but i don't want to get the 12gb model but if i do get it, is it possible to use my old 80gb HDD and put it in the new ps3 super slim
The 80GB "locked" data (DLC, etc.) is gone if the system's dead, but other data will still be there. If you want the 80GB data to your slim you can find USB-SATA "slave" rigs to put all the remaining data in the slim. If you are talking about getting a new one, then you can do the data transfer utility.
I have the 80gb 4 USB backwards compatible model. I also have a spare 512gb Samsung 840 Evo SSD. Does anybody know if that SSD is FAT32 since the PS3 only supports those? I'm only doing this for more storage since the SSD was a gift but I have no use for it except maybe to pop it in my fat PS3.
With the Super Slim models, is it a bad idea to go with a 7200 rpm hdd ? There is no ventillation issue and my girlfriend keeps the apartment rather chilly so I am fairly confident it wouldn't overheat. I'm just curious if there is really much of a performance boost by going from the 5400 rpm to the 7200 rpm.
So after upgrading my hdd to a 500 GB one. Everything went well but then i noticed my PS3 becoming very slow. Takes twice as much time to start up, GTA V starts to have freezing and texture issues, Saints Row IV takes long to load and crashes a lot, Max Payne 3 lags as hell and the system it self starts to easily over heat. After removing my HDD, everything runs fine. I would appreciate any helpful reply.
Is it possible to take the Hard-Drive from the old slim , and simply replace it into the new Super-Slim PS3? I want to upgrade my playstation, and was thinking of getting the cheap 12GB flash version and swapping out the HDD's. Is this possible?
Is this the 500gb version or 12gb because i am buying the 12gb version but i want to add a hardrive with more memory because 12gb is hardly any. Can you do that for the 12gb version becuase it is flash memory? Thanks
Hey Ryan, thanks for the video .. one question though .. When I insert the HDD, the ps3 recognizes it and says do you want to use it as the primary drive and to transfer any data from my 12gb memory space .. all this is cool, however doesnt this mean that the system will run slower to load games ? i.e. we are now setting the primary drive to a mechanical HDD over the flash based 12gb stock RAM (SSD) ?
I got a 1tb, it didn't work & I tried a number of things, like putting an update on a USB stick, that didn't work either. In the end, I had to put it in safe mode, it worked then & recognised the 1TB HDD. Benn working fine, put loads of stuff on without a problem.
Sorry, but did you say the PS3 does the format for you? My last PS3 (old fat one) didn't, so I never got the chance to do this, but I have the super slim 12gb one & I want to put a 1tb one in now. Will I have to use my laptop or will the PS3 format it for me?
Will this work the same way on the fat ps3? Also, since i donto have a hard drive to transfer my saves to, hoe would i back that up. I dont have a second ps3. One last question. Would transferring my profile (trophies, name, etc) just be a matter of creating a new use and signing in as my old psn?
I just bought the super slim, and I was so afraid of breaking the case too. This is definitely helpful to those of us upgrading from an old model plagued by the YLOD. Thank you!

Yes they do. I've been using 7200 rpm HDD's in my PS3's for years. They even save a few seconds in certain games when loading.

So why doesn't the 12-Gig model already have one of these brackets?
Clover Goldngreen no it doesn't
Farhan S Read what the op said again he didn't ask if it came with it he asked why it doesnt
10 years too late but its because it uses flash memory and doesn't come with an hdd so no point in them shipping it with the mount included.
Yes it does. As I say in the video, consider backing up your data because any HDD being put into a PS3 needs to be formatted.

Does this transfer all data from old PS3 to new PS3 ?
Thx for the video(like it )and get hdd from my ps3...
but why the pc not see that hdd...any clue??
Yes-this is actually the largest recommended drive to use. Anything larger than that starts to get very dicey/hit & miss.
Hi if i change the Hard drive can i jailbreak the super slim because now i can't jailbreak so i thought if i change the harddrive maybe that would work?
If we can remove the 12GB HDD with one from the old PS3 slim (as you say it bellow), I cant figure out why they sell a HDD mounting bracket...
Yes you can. The hdd can be used as an external hdd if you combine it with an external hard drive enclosure.
hi i was wondering i planing on getting a new ps3 the super slim version but i don't want to get the 12gb model but if i do get it, is it possible to use my old 80gb HDD and put it in the new ps3 super slim
It is but the hdd wont be fully secure and you dont want to risk breaking your new hdd. Recommend buying a mounting bracket
Help where buy those super slim at and wat they do to your ps3
If you just bought the console and wanted to do a HDD upgrade straight away would you have to back up all your data? :)
how do u get the screws for the mounting bracket coz 12gb does not come with a HDD
Hi I didn't get the blue screw in my hard drive I got nothing

I have the 80gb 4 USB backwards compatible model. I also have a spare 512gb Samsung 840 Evo SSD. Does anybody know if that SSD is FAT32 since the PS3 only supports those? I'm only doing this for more storage since the SSD was a gift but I have no use for it except maybe to pop it in my fat PS3.
hi i need help my 1th ps3 broke and my memory was in it.. then i got a new ps3....... how do i move the Data to the new ps3?
Can I do this for other models as well?
I got a 12 gb superslim today... Does it not come with the bracket like the slim models?!
Is the mounting bracket for the playstation super slim the same one found in the old fat ps3?
Any way to upgrade the 12 GB model without having to wait for the adapter thingy to come out?
what size hdd does the super slim use ? when i search to buy one it comes up 2.5 inch but when i search to buy the caddy it comes up 5 inch
i have a dead ps3 can't i use the mounting bracket from that console to go in a 12gb ssps3?
No use the mounting bracket used in your super slim PS3 and put your old ps3's Hdd mount it on and it should work
did you get that hdd out of the original slim they use toshiba???
What is the name of your new hdd and do you i need to buy a new mounting bracket?
my ps3 super slim got error when update the system....via internet
pls help....
must be 2.5 sata II , ?
With the Super Slim models, is it a bad idea to go with a 7200 rpm hdd ? There is no ventillation issue and my girlfriend keeps the apartment rather chilly so I am fairly confident it wouldn't overheat. I'm just curious if there is really much of a performance boost by going from the 5400 rpm to the 7200 rpm.
Im missing the tray that holds the drive itself
So after upgrading my hdd to a 500 GB one. Everything went well but then i noticed my PS3 becoming very slow. Takes twice as much time to start up, GTA V starts to have freezing and texture issues, Saints Row IV takes long to load and crashes a lot, Max Payne 3 lags as hell and the system it self starts to easily over heat. After removing my HDD, everything runs fine.
I would appreciate any helpful reply.
What's the hdd rpm and have you shaked it or dropped it
Is it possible to take the Hard-Drive from the old slim , and simply replace it into the new Super-Slim PS3? I want to upgrade my playstation, and was thinking of getting the cheap 12GB flash version and swapping out the HDD's. Is this possible?
Can't I use the HDD from an external hard drive or something? Finding one for the ps3 is very hard (unless it's expensive)
Is this the 500gb version or 12gb because i am buying the 12gb version but i want to add a hardrive with more memory because 12gb is hardly any. Can you do that for the 12gb version becuase it is flash memory? Thanks
im going to get a 1TB HDD for my mac and put the 500GB HDD in my PS3 do i have to format it before i put it into my ps3?
Hey Ryan, thanks for the video .. one question though .. When I insert the HDD, the ps3 recognizes it and says do you want to use it as the primary drive and to transfer any data from my 12gb memory space .. all this is cool, however doesnt this mean that the system will run slower to load games ? i.e. we are now setting the primary drive to a mechanical HDD over the flash based 12gb stock RAM (SSD) ?
If you do upgrade your Playstation by adding a hard drive, do you then lose all your saved files? Or will it remain unchanged??
How Can i connect the harddrive to my computer and transfer my files movies, songs, etc?
I got a 1tb, it didn't work & I tried a number of things, like putting an update on a USB stick, that didn't work either. In the end, I had to put it in safe mode, it worked then & recognised the 1TB HDD. Benn working fine, put loads of stuff on without a problem.
Wait does reformating delete all data of ur hard drive
Sorry, but did you say the PS3 does the format for you?
My last PS3 (old fat one) didn't, so I never got the chance to do this, but I have the super slim 12gb one & I want to put a 1tb one in now. Will I have to use my laptop or will the PS3 format it for me?
right so im thinking of just getting a 12gb flash ps3 and just fit in my 500gb hdd can i do that or has it not got a place for it to go
Will this work the same way on the fat ps3? Also, since i donto have a hard drive to transfer my saves to, hoe would i back that up. I dont have a second ps3. One last question. Would transferring my profile (trophies, name, etc) just be a matter of creating a new use and signing in as my old psn?
do you have to have the bracket for the memorie ?
how is that goin i am thinking about doing the same hing
