    TY for an excellent spy murder mystery. Film has the feel of an early Sherlock Holmes plot...lots of twists & turns like, "The Voice of Terror". A lot of dark scenes, guess film is deteriorated, but still worth a watch👍

    A British actor, David Farrar (1908 - 1995) appeared as fictional detective Sexton Blake in two films - this one and Meet Sexton Blake (1945). He worked as a journalist before joining a repertory company in 1932 before his first film, Return of a Stranger (1937). This movie was made before Farrar had his big breakthrough role as a British agent in Black Narcissus in 1947 opposite Deborah Kerr (1921 - 2007) and Kathleen Byron (1921 - 2009). Even before this notable film, he was hugely popular receiving hundreds of fan letters a week largely due to his Sexton Blake roles. He continued to work throughout the 1950s although increasingly in secondary roles. His last role was in The 300 Spartans in 1952 after which he walked away from the movie industry - with increasing age he was no longer a leading man/romantic lead but was playing fathers and uncles.

      I've read that the term "film noir" referred to low-keyed lighting, left intentionally dark to build a sense of forboding and keep the audience on edge. Also heard the term in reference to dark subject matter... crime, murder, mystery. The deep shadows often covered a multitude of sins like low budget sets and bad stunt fights.

    Marvellous ripping yarn! Only David Farrar was able to do something like this without it slipping into self parody. Actually he was a much more subtle actor than he seemed, for example in Black Narcissus. Sadly the Swinging Sixties made a laughing stock of his type of stiff-upper-lip hero.
    A few questions: why were there extended sequences in the dark towards the end? Why was it called The Echo Murders? Why release this at the end of the war, making the whole basis of the film (a Nazi fifth column base) obsolete?

    • @FundingAnimals
      @FundingAnimals 2 роки тому +3

      At 59:15 "Excuse me, gentlemen. Blackout." Due to night time bombing raids by the Germans, the English had mandatory blackouts at night. You didn't want the German bombers to see the lights of your house and drop their bombs on your town. No streetlights or porchlights, and heavy, black curtains needed to completely cover windows to keep light from getting out. I guess they were trying to show that in the subsequent dark scenes.

      Your comment led me down the internet rabbit hole looking for information about those 'knickers', which are called 'plus fours' because they are 4 inches longer than traditional knickers pants. 'Plus fours' are sporting wear worn for outdoor activities such as hiking, shooting & golfing. They may seem laughable, but they had a practical purpose. One didn't have to deal with stuffing long-legged pants into wellington or hiking boots & they saved wear & tear on long-legged pants out in the field, when combined with heavy-duty woolen socks. What was old-fashioned is new again, & 'plus fours' are making a comeback amongst golfers, albeit in gaudy, bright colors. Fashion is a strange, fascinating phenomenon.
