Use a proper brake piston compressor, they're cheap enough and far easier to use. Also, lube the brake pad/caliper contact surfaces, keeps noise and corrosion down. Some people lube where the pads meet the hardware clips, others don't.
Retract the caliper piston first and then cleanup caliper bracket so that you know whether or not the caliper is frozen and needs replacement and the bracket cleanup wouldn't be required
