One of the most kick a$$ riffs in rock n roll history...Leslie West was the man...if Mountain did it, it's worth checking out...them & Grand Funk Railroad were 2 of the best bands of that era...
This tune was so heavy when it came out, that radio stations could only play it between midnight and 6 am....Even with that it became a hit and has lasted 53 yrs
Mountain, you rocked me hard in the 70's. I'm 72 years old now, and Mountain, you still rock me hard. Leslie, your guitar riffs, and your leads, always blew my mind, they were so good. As for your voice, it was powerful, and unique, and I loved it
Actually written about a Mississippi college girl in the crowd as the band played at 30 Acres on Nantucket Island in the late 60's used to see these guys down the street from my house as i grew up
"Never in my Life" "For Yasgur's Farm" ( about Woodstock). And "Theme from an Imaginary Western" You'll Love them!!! And then... "Nantucket Sleighride Live"
Vicksburg is in the State of Mississippi located on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River north of New Orleans. The excellent Leslie West on guitar and Felix Pappalardi on bass. "Nantucket Sleighride", "For Yasgur's Farm", "Boys in the Band", "Theme for an Imaginary Western", "Dreams of Milk and Honey", and "Crossroader" to name a few.
I saw them in 1974 in Long Beach, California. It was a great show, but one of the things that was most memorable was the drum solo. Corky Laing at one point switched sticks and lit the new sticks on fire. He continued playing with burning sticks, which he was also tossing high into the air and then catching them. Nothing to do with the music of course. The opening 15 seconds of "Mississippi Queen" are enough to make it a forever classic rock song, with that heavy blues underpinning.
Mountain was an American hard rock band formed in Long Island, New York, in 1969. Originally comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist and vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight, and drummer N. D. Smart (soon replaced by Corky Laing), the band broke up in 1972, but reunited on several occasions prior to West's death in 2020. Best known for their cowbell-tinged song "Mississippi Queen", as well as the heavily sampled song "Long Red" and their performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, Mountain is one of many bands to be commonly credited as having influenced the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s. The group's musical style primarily consisted of hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal. My favorite Mountain song is the haunting “Nantucket Sleigh Ride”. A power trio who added keys for this live performance. All 3 had great stories. Got to see them in the 80’s after the bass player was killed. Look’em up!
Steve Knight was their keyboardist for their first four albums... Climbing, Nantucket Sleighride, Live and Flowers of Evil... and was an integral part of their sound.
I have this legendary song in my regular playlist in my vehicle at work. I know when I hear that cowbell opening the intro, that it is patrol car karaoke time!!
This live version adds lots of energy and rivals the studio version, which can boast (tho reluctantly) a cleaner sound. As others below may have stated (I didn't look down all the comments), this song is too short. WOW! LW does a quick section of scat singing!
The great Leslie West at his best! Some radio stations wouldn't play it in my area in 70. One did who had the moxy to play it and glad they did. Loved it then still do in 2023. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 FIRE.
There was a radio station in NYC that used the cowbell and riff intro during their Station ID breaks ... In every record store I went to, I would hum the riff to the store clerk until one finally showed me the album it was from... :D Check out these songs Never in My Life, Nantucket Sleighride, Theme from an Imaginary Western and The Animal Trainer and the Toad. Cheers!
The studio recording is just a little cleaner, but with the same high energy. It's been one of my favorites also, Mr Boyd. As you pointed out, guitarist and lead singer Leslie West does play a little like BB King! Great reaction.
Even better Live! Everyone who played music and toured in the 70’s was Billboard as Rock-N-Roll. ECETI course Blues. I do remember hem. So amazing course so was everyone!,
Mountain played at Woodstock ('69) which you can see on youtube. I recall liking the album Flowers Of Evil. But I still need to dive deeper. So your channel is great for that impetus to explore. Peace all y'all
Good stuff. I remember the first time I heard this. My dad was listening to music on the 8 track player in this flat black 78 thunderbird he was fixing up that he bought used. I was 12, it was 1988. I was already listening to music but when I heard this, I was as blown away as you are in this video. The guitar riff is crazy good. The drums are bangin n the song is very catchy lyrically.
I love this song. Leslie West was one of the BEST!
Місяць тому
Saw Mountain in 1972,at the Washington U field house in STL . I was 13 and both my older brothers and older sisters were there too. The show rocked so hard.. loved the way Corky beat those drums silly.. And Leslie was Long Island’s answer to Duane Allman
You really should give listen to "Nantucket Sleighride" as found on the album "Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On," released in 1972. Eighteen minutes of goodness.
Leslie West's first album was called "Mountain" because of his size but then just called the band Mountain on his 2nd album where this gen comes from. Saw them at Woodstock. Leslie played locally in a band called The Vagrants.
Vicksburg is on the Mississippi River. Yes the Queen was a paddle wheel steamer. Try some Black Oak Arkansas is younare interested in Southern 70s rock. Great guitars
One Hit Wonder.................. *Three Gold albums!* Even great story songs don't always chart well... Do yourself a favor and start with their studio albums, their bass player is also a very talented producer(CREAM) and it shows. *Nantucket Sleigh Ride Theme for an Imaginary Western For Yasger's Farm* are all great! PS Eva Cassidy is someone you need to hear.......you will cry for what you have missed, and that is not a figure of speech.
Check out Never In My Life, Theme From Imaginary Western, and Nantucket Sleighride. Great power trio for the most part, occasionally used a keyboard player but never needed one.
I only really know about Mountain due to Leslie West's relationship with the Howard Stern Show. Supposedly the story goes that they played at Woodstock, but their manager made a stink about them not being filmed by the film crew without being payed for it, so they were never in the film that would have been great coverage for them, and as a result, they ended up just kind of being forgotten in time.
Do yourself a favour and listen to their album Mountain Climbing - Woodstock - 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I was in the States in 1970 - greetings from Cape Town South Africa 🇿🇦
He was Howard stain show and they were at the meadowlands concert of who and Howard was walking in back and he run to lead singer he playing for who guitar 🎸
The cow bell sound came because Felix P was getting tired of waiting for the recording session to begin! Leslie West was called the King of Tone. Rather than work on finger blazing licks, he wanted listeners to remember what he played, amd not just how!
Bro, great vid! The vid you are watching is my upload. I found it in the wild, from a family member of the guitar player. I remastered the audio to clean it up as well as I could. Link my chan, please!
Theme from an Imaginary Western and Nantucket Sleigh Ride, Studio version, the way we first heard them. Live Outside with No Acoustics just doesn't reflect their true talent. Saw them live in the 70s outdoors, One man's opinion.
Hi! Could you please react to songs from María Becerra? She is an argentinian singer, nominated to latín Grammys and recently she drop out a new álbum that is amazing. Some suggestions: Mandamientos - María Becerra Doble vida - María becerra La nena de argentina - María becerra
The comedian (and former priest) Sam Kinison did a great cover of this song, but he changed the lyrics to tell his true life story about a woman who ruined his life. In the video his dresses up and parodies Irish singer Sinead O'Conner.
Vicksburg is in Mississippi, I know that because I delivered catalog cards to the JC Penney's at the Vicksburg Mall from Memphis on my way back I stopped at this little casino in Louisiana played slot machines drank a bunch of beer and got extremely shit faced 😵💫🤣🤣🤣
This entire album was excellent!
Epic Legendary Song Leslie West Killed It on Vocals & Guitar 🎸
Over 40 years later, STILL one of the hardest rockin' tunes you'll hear.........R.I.P., Leslie, you were "The Mountain"
What a beauty Leslie West was!!
That stank facce though Mr. Boyd!! Mountain was one of the first bands to use that heavy heavy distortion of the gtr. And that man can PLAY!!
I have been listening to this song for over 50 years and still gets me going every time
Fuk yea, I’ve probably played/heard this song over a thousand times and I could go another thousand and still it would rock the fuk outta me.💪🤛👍
One of the most kick a$$ riffs in rock n roll history...Leslie West was the man...if Mountain did it, it's worth checking out...them & Grand Funk Railroad were 2 of the best bands of that era...

One of the best pure rock songs ever. I never tire of hearing it.

Fellow Long Island native Howard Stern has called Mountain one of his favourite bands and has occasionally played their music on his show.
This is one of the greatest riffs of all time. . Dirty, crunchy, sludgy, lurching, and totally unforgettable.
Supposedly Hendrix popped in during recording and said nice riff
And soulful
Yup! The kind of song that makes You feel like You have to wash your hands after listening to it.
Actually written about a Mississippi college girl in the crowd as the band played at 30 Acres on Nantucket Island in the late 60's used to see these guys down the street from my house as i grew up
Great reaction!❤️🤘🏻
Legendary. Very heavy for the time.
Great reaction!!! This song is epic. Thanks for doing it.
My first time too. Amazing
"Never in my Life" "For Yasgur's Farm" ( about Woodstock). And "Theme from an Imaginary Western" You'll Love them!!! And then... "Nantucket Sleighride Live"

The lead in Nantucket Sleigh ride is one of my favorites!
Don't cry little Robin Marie 😢 that is a spectacular Jam for sure especially on the album Twin Peaks 30 minutes long amazing stuff ✌️
This one's the banger of all bangers. Loved that you got it immediately.

Rock Band forever!
Mountain along with Cream literally blew me away when I was a kid and greatly influenced the types of music that I listen to.
i still have a copy of the album this came from. on high rotation i n the 70s, nice to see it again

A lot of the rock groups of that era were greatly inspired by the blues artists they grew up listening to.
Brings me back to guitar hero.

I'm from South Mississippi and trust me it's very humid and MOIST down here on the gulf coast in casino land
The great Leslie West at his best! Some radio stations wouldn't play it in my area in 70. One did who had the moxy to play it and glad they did. Loved it then still do in 2023. 🔥🔥🔥🔥 FIRE.
I am also surprised that this has flown under your radar for so long. It is a awesome song, and I loved all my life because it rocks!
Mountain killed this track for sure. Vocally and instrumentally
This song always came on the classic rock radio station ever since I was a kid, absolutely love this song

Southern Rock is the 70's genre classification of Mississippi Queen.
All 3 guys are from New York City. Fact.
@@36karpatoruski I know, right!?! lol.
Talk about underrated guitarists. Leslie West had one of the best guitar tones of all time. Check out Nantucket sllieghride.
Great song, and a brilliant reaction!
I was born in the mid-eighties, but have a lot of love for 60s/70s music, probably my Dads influence!
Leslie West, R.I.P. 👊🏼🙏🏼
The way you move while it's playing says it all, Mr.LBoyd for President!
Leslie West was the greatest Power Chorder in History and the nicest guy in Rock
I love this song. Leslie West was one of the BEST!

Leslie West is an amazing artist. Mississippi Queen has a delta blues feel to it. And I can see BB King doing this song.
Taunta, Sammy's tune/ Nantucket Sleigh-ride . from the album Nantucket Sleigh-ride 1971 By Mountain
I was lucky enough to see Leslie West with Jack Bruce in LA...crazy, baby.
Blues rock at it's best 🔥
There's so much to give with rock........like American Women by The guess Who..etc. Peace and Love
You really should give listen to "Nantucket Sleighride" as found on the album "Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On," released in 1972. Eighteen minutes of goodness.
Leslie West. One of the pioneers of sound. I highly recommend Mountain's 'Dreams of Milk and Honey'.
Leslie West the king of tone R.I.P. Played both Woodstocks and married at the 2nd. Influencesd so many but shubbed by the Rock Hall.
Don't Look Around live in 1971 is another tremendous performance from Mountain.
Leslie West's first album was called "Mountain" because of his size but then just called the band Mountain on his 2nd album where this gen comes from. Saw them at Woodstock. Leslie played locally in a band called The Vagrants.
Delta blues? Southern Rock. Bayou rock. A fantastic song that seems to keep falling thru the cracks for me but I love it.
I cant believe you've never heard this song before !
We NEED more COWBELL
RIP felix and jack and leslie

MrLboyd, it looks like you haven't reacted to CREAM either and I hope it is not because you have missed them too, if so be ready for a wild 60s ride!
Yup, when Rock wasn't always pretty...
Great video!
Listen to the studio recording of this song. MUCH BETTER!
Nantucket Sleighride
Check out Never In My Life, Theme From Imaginary Western, and Nantucket Sleighride. Great power trio for the most part, occasionally used a keyboard player but never needed one.
This is music right here, this was the sh!t back in the day, pure talent!! It also favors Stevie Ray Vaughn⭐
No matter how bad yer day was...listen to "Missippi Queen" real loud. Repeat.
You will air-guitar to it and bang head/toss hair.
if you are looking for more mountain you have to listen to Nantucket sleigh ride...

Love Mr. Walsh and his Funk #49!!

Anyone else wanting to play Rock Band now?
The cow bell sound came because Felix P was getting tired of waiting for the recording session to begin! Leslie West was called the King of Tone. Rather than work on finger blazing licks, he wanted listeners to remember what he played, amd not just how!
One of the few rock bands who can say they influenced Zep
For more goosebumps inspiring songs from Mountain, check out Never In My Life and Don't Look Around.
Sam Kinison did a version of this
Try out other performances or the original track

Sometimes I'm disappointed when you react to a live version instead of the studio one, but this has a nice raw sound.
Mountain, Twin Peaks, live in Japan 1973
Southern Rock!
Theme from an Imaginary Western and Nantucket Sleigh Ride, Studio version, the way we first heard them.

If you like the music or bluesy music you gotta listen to White Stripes "Death Letter" its a Son House cover who should also listen to
As a rocker from way back who's been in many bands, after a while, you realize that rock 'n' roll is simply blues, funk, and soul turned up to 11.
Try for yasgurs farm, theme from an imaginary western, Nantucket sleigh ride
Mississippi gambling paddleboat, or riverboat.
Please do John Michael Montgomery, "Letters from Home"
This is one of those songs where the volume knob never seems to go far enough to the right.
