  • Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) is a colossal figure who bestrides the lying between the age of Pope and the Romantics. In acknowledgement of his extraordinary erudition, he is often referred to as Dr. Johnson. Dr. Johnson made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer.
He is an important figure not only for conservative thinking, but the English moral sense tradition.
On today's episode, we discuss this much-overlooked but enormously important literary figure.

This was wonderful. Thank you so much. Now I'm excited to pick up Mr Johnson's essays as soon as possible.

I still can't get the image of Robbie Coltrane as Dr Johnson from Blackadder III, out of my mind. Still, love the content. Thanks.

I enjoyed this talk very much. Can you recommend a biography of Johnson?

I have not read recent biographies of Johnson. Boswell’s is essential reading. Bate’s is an interesting literary reading.

In public school the "instructors" teach emotionally not humbly. They are training students with a specific agenda in mind. I'll never forget how my 8th grade science teacher berated myself and a few Christian friends about our upbringing in God and how God wasn't real. Definitely targeted us. He would have these ideas he would have us brainstorm like compare living things to cars or machines in which the lesson was life was just a random soulless machine. I felt he was trying to degrade life to inanimate material objects and foist material objects into living systems like all creation was just a random dusty chemical machine. They do horrible things to kids and lie to the parents who too busy to care lol

Yes, unfortunately, predators target the weak, and that is often our young students. Scientific materialism is now often the norm. Luckily I know a number of Christian scientists who remind me that their discipline is not our enemy.

Thanks so much both. You mentioned about financial support but didn't say how to actually help; what's the best way? I'd also be very interested in any paid courses you put out, looking forward to the website!
