One of the most underrated upsets ever. Back then NFC powerhouses almost never lost in the divisional rounds. Favre and the Packers bouncing Young was extremely shocking.
Especially considering the 49ers in 95 had the number one defense in the NFL but I do think the fact that Mike Holmgren was the coach he knew how to beat that George Seifert defense
MICOLE WHYTE Fritz Shurmur also deserves a ton of credit. The 49ers scored 17, 20, 14, and 10 points in the four Packer wins from Jan 1996 to Jan 1998...including three playoff games. That’s 15.3 ppg. Remarkable
@Roosevelt Darbey their defense wasn't hurting not having Deion Sanders they had the number 1 defense in the National Football League. They lost his game against the Packers because of turnovers. Same reason why they lost the 92 NFC Championship game to the Cowboys at home turnovers 2 interceptions by Steve Young of muffed Punt by Dexter Carter. Deion aint have shit to do with this loss.
Unfortunately todays media want to burry Farve's success and only focus on the negatives. With Holmgren & Farve together are better than any combo not named Montana and Walsh or Belichck and Brady.
After being the doormat in the '70's and 80's , the Packers had three straight 9-7 seasons in the '90's before finally breaking through with an 11-5 season in '95. This game was the turning point in Packer history and showed that they finally belonged. I remember it fondly as I was the only Packer fan in a bar dominated by 49er fans. They didn't even give me a hard time since they fully expected to win. As the game went on, they didn't say anything to me. They were in shock.
I absolutely love the ole school west coast offense! It had such rhythm and grace. Both teams ran it well and even though Farve is a straight gun slinger, he still had a grace about him.
GB basically did to SF what SF did to Dallas the previous year with the early turnover and scoring early. Dallas, SF, and GB, what a great rivalry all three teams had over the years, so much talent!

Green Bay assaulted San Francisco here in the divisional round and then Dallas bullied and bruised Green Bay the next week. It was a heavyweight championship fight any time these three encountered each other in the 90's.
The Packers tried to get physical with the Cowboys, too, but, unfortunately for them, that was the kind of game that Dallas team relished. I remember at one point in the NFC title game the Packers pushed Emmitt Smith into a kicking net on their sideline, and Dallas' Darren Woodson blasted a Packer receiver and took out a Green Bay coach in the process.

This is the first of three straight years the Niners were knocked out of the playoffs by the Packers. Including this game, the Packers won 13 out of the next 14 games against the 49ers, the one exception being the Terrell Owens game in the 98 playoffs.
goldenraven20 They would have won that if the refs weren’t blind. Jerry Rice fumbled the ball and the Packers recovered it. The refs ruled he was down but the replay showed he fumbled it before he went down. Even Summerall and Madden saw it. Two plays later was the Owens catch. If they would have ruled correctly, GB would would have went to the Divisional round and most likely have beaten Atlanta and they would have made it back to the NFC Championship game. And they didn’t have instant replay at that point. That game happens. Very next year, they bring back instant replay.

I'm a Cowboys fan and was at the Championship game the following week. Dallas by no means creamed the Packers that day. Favre put on a clinic, and the Packers had the lead at 27-24 with about 8:00 left to play. Cowboys pulled away with 14 unanswered, but even then I saw what was coming next season and beyond.

The first of eight playoff meetings between the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers. GB won the first three postseason meetings (1995 NFC DIV, 1996 NFC DIV, 1997 NFCCG) before the 49ers finally beat the Pack with the Catch II in the 1998 NFC WC. In the 21st Century, the Packers won in the 2001 NFC DIV before the 49ers won the next three in the 2012 NFC DIV, 2013 NFC WC and 2019 NFCCG.
Nah, the Packers were definitely hungry, and showing all the signs of a championship team by 1995. This was like the first fight in Rocky 3.. the Niners didn't look like themselves from the opening kick.
SF was my team as a kid. Before we got the Ravens in Baltimore, I loved the 49ers. Young, Rice, Stokes, Jones, Hearst. That team was stacked! Crazy that my home team Ravens, ends up beating my childhood team in the SB
I looked up "most pass attempts in a playoff game" out of curiosity and was shocked that it was Steve Young in this game. This is my first time watching any footage of it. Trestman certainly liked to call pass plays, since Young was on pace for an astronomical 650 pass attempts in the regular season.
Absolute shocker because everyone thought it was gonna be Cowboys and Niners in the NFC Championship again. A guy from my home state of Mississippi carved up the niners defense.
Crazy the Niners could never beat the Pack. They should’ve won more superbowls other than ‘94. Honestly, letting Ricky Watters walk away really left a void in the Niners Swag and attitude. He brought emotional tenacity that took pressure away from Steve Young, once he left, Steve Young had to sacrifice more and his body gave out sooner than later.
this was and this is one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. NFC #1 seeds during this era were basically locks to win especially the 49ers. as a packers fan even tho they got killed vs dallas the next week to me this was the win that showed the packers had turned the corner and were legit Superbowl contenders.
Packers didn't get killed by Dallas... They were up by a field goal going in to the fourth. The Cowboys scored fourteen unanswered to close out the game. Experience prevailed, but the Packers by no means got "killed."
Once San Francisco lost in the NFC divionsal playoffs to an underdog Green Bay Packers in 1995 Dallas got smooth sailing to winning a 3 Superbowl in the nineties
That was really a brilliant move to have Adam Walker start at FB with a broken arm lol. Just go with one back ffs...Was never a fan of Seifert. Credit to GB though, beating the defending world champs in their backyard is a monumental win.
One of the biggest blunders the Niners did was not resigning Ricky Watters, he was badly missed in this game. Steve Young damn near threw for 60+ times with no running game. No balance whatsoever, also the Niners defense couldn't solve the Packers offence as Green Bay ran the West Coast Offense better than them.
Same that's why I'm watching this and 1997 NFC championship game lmao m.ua-cam.com/video/_fxWCT2P59o/v-deo.html&pp=ygUfbmZsIHRocm93YmFjayBwYWNrZXJzIHZzIDQ5ZXJzIA%3D%3D
Was only 11 when this game happened but I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember the sense of dread when Jacke had a FG blocked on Green Bays opening drive, thinking it was a foreshadowing of things to come. Then the Walker fumble happened and Green Bay's offense was moving the ball all over. Remember the stunned crowd at halftime as nobody saw this coming, not even Packers fans in their wildest dreams. You knew the 49ers would come out fighting the 2nd half but the defense hounded Young all game.
When you have Derrick Loville and a one-armed Adam Walker as your starting backfield, you're in trouble. They tee'd off on Young who was getting abused all season. Gotta give it the Pack though, they came into the defending champs backyard and took it from them. Favre at his absolute peak here 95-'97'.
The 49ers had two of the games best offensive playcallers in NFL history serving as OCs while George Seifert was head coach-Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan. Both would be responsible for their teams winning three combined Super Bowls in the 1990s. It’s a great thing the 49ers have a superb playcaller as head coach right now in Kyle Shanahan!
Why would they allow a guy wearing a cast any opportunity to handle a football is beyond me. That play was on the coaching staff. Credit the Packers and Newsome for capitalizing on that.
Millions of Cowboys fans heaved a sigh of relief and thankfulness to Green Bay for beating San Fran this day. It is highly doubtful Dallas would have beaten the Niners in the NFC title game, even at home.
Dallas would have beat them because mentally i think they had the 49ers number 1992, 1993, (finally in 1994 they beat them). And also remember Dallas now had Deion, so the Cowboys would have definitely had the edge.
Without Ricky Waters (who had signed with the Eagles) and Deion (who had signed with the Cowboys) they were pretty much flat. They were badly exposed in this game, the Cowboys would have beaten then easily, probably more than the Packers. Because in the NFC Championship the very next week they had the Cowboys on the ropes, if Farve doesn't throw that interception in the 4th quarter, they probably win that game, but that's hard to tell, seeing as how good the Cowboys were at the time. In December they were just bad, but they got hot at the right time and won it all. It's a toss up between the Cowboys and the Packers and who would've won.
@@justinturley7071 The reason I have a hard time with that is that the Niners routed Dallas 38-20 earlier in the regular season just a few months before this game - without Steve Young, without Deion, etc. So if they could do that in the regular season with Elvis Grbac, who's to say they couldn't smack Dallas just as hard in the NFC title game?
Green Bay actually did Dallas a favor by ousting the Niners. Barry Switzer was pretty inept against the Niners (1-3 record), and they already had beaten Dallas earlier in the year at Texas Stadium. And Dallas owned the packers in the 90s, slapping them once again in the NFC championship game a week after this game.
I remember watching this game and being so relieved that the pokes didn’t have to play the niners in the nfc championship game. The niners has beaten us 3 times in a row at that point. The following year Dallas lost in the divisional round to Carolina when Irvin went down with an injury. Green Bay dodged a bullet cuz favre could not beat the pokes in their prime.
Steve Young threw over 60 times in this game, and there was so much consistent pressure. Favre seemed to find the open man and fire away too fast for the defense to get to him.
Yep but farve moved better inside of the pocket and had a better feel for evading pressure. I know he has a reputation for throwing a lot of interceptions but it didn't happen in meaningful moments against the niners. We tried to draft players to contend with Antonio Freeman who constantly killed us but they all choked and let us down when it mattred
Favre had a three year run that was spectacular and he had the int issue under control during that time. Can you imagine what 1995 Favre could do in todays era? Lol
@@erocs9747 it’s not a common opinion but an incontrovertible fact the refs missed that call & I’m a 49er fan acknowledging that, the next year instant replay was instituted into the nfl

You gotta be freaking kidding me. Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks , Andre rison, Desmond Howard. They might not have been household names at the time but made significant contributions to beating the 49ers consistently. Generally speaking I don't disagree too strongly as Jerry rice, Terrell Owens, and JJ stokes should have been able to have better production. The difference coaching can make. A more talented team can lose if the coach is not getting the most out of his players.
Does anybody have a copy of the 1996 SF 49ers vs the Carolina Panthers at Candlestick Park on December 8th Of 1996 that could be posted to watch on UA-cam ? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔?
Those old Packer teams were fierce. Newsome seals the deal with a pick at the end. Packers Defense has gotten better over the years. They should watch these old films. For inspiration.
I was 30 in 1995. I been a California Packer fan since 1980. I had friends who made fun of the Packers in high school and after high school. They were 49er, Raiders, Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins fans. I remember watching as a Cowboys fan and being a little bit relieved they didn’t have to play San Fran in the title game the following week .They had beaten Dallas the last NFC title game and in the regular season that year. I had confidence Dallas would beat GB.
@Steve Kovaleski Four in a row in the playoffs including two in Lambeau. The San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants are the only teams to date to beat the Green Bay Packers in a postseason game on the frozen tundra twice.
This is why I hate when you youngins comment on videos close your mouth. The 49ers in 95 had the number 1 defense in the NFL Hmong the league leaders in takeaways their defense gave up the least amount of yards in the whole world league and their defense was number two in scoring only giving up 16 points per game. The offense was still ranked number one in the NFL in 1995 and averaged 28 ppg number 1 in the NFL. Coming into this playoff game the 49ers had won 6 out of their last 7 games including dominating playoff teams like the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas the Miami Dolphins in Miami the Buffalo Bills. Also take into consideration how top two seeds in the NFC rarely lost in the divisional round back then.

Absolute shocker because everyone thought it was gonna be Cowboys and Niners in the NFC Championship again. A guy from my home state of Mississippi carved up the niners defense.
Brett Favre had some glorious seasons with the packers. He had a beautiful throw. He got his only ring.
Made me love Elway even more when he crushed Packers fans hopes of a Dynasty
Crazy the Niners could never beat the Pack. They should’ve won more superbowls other than ‘94. Honestly, letting Ricky Watters walk away really left a void in the Niners Swag and attitude. He brought emotional tenacity that took pressure away from Steve Young, once he left, Steve Young had to sacrifice more and his body gave out sooner than later.
True, favre owned the niners in the 90s. Packers should have more rings in the 90s.
Who's winning tonight!????!?
@@peterlundsten3302Favre choked against Elway
@@Spooky_515 favre had 3 tds 300 yards Elway had 77 yard no tds ot was the running game Davis ran for 3 tds 200 yards wtf r u talking bout
Couldn't afford him. They screwed up their future cap space after the 1994 season.
this was and this is one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. NFC #1 seeds during this era were basically locks to win especially the 49ers. as a packers fan even tho they got killed vs dallas the next week to me this was the win that showed the packers had turned the corner and were legit Superbowl contenders.
The 49ers were a #2 seed that year due to them losing the season finale at ATL.
Packers didn't get killed by Dallas... They were up by a field goal going in to the fourth. The Cowboys scored fourteen unanswered to close out the game. Experience prevailed, but the Packers by no means got "killed."
Word on the street keith jackson is still wide the fukk open. Our back 2 back was stopped after deion and ricky left
I love that it’s so loud at the stadium you can’t even hear the play-by-play 😂
Who wins tonight?!?
Once San Francisco lost in the NFC divionsal playoffs to an underdog Green Bay Packers in 1995 Dallas got smooth sailing to winning a 3 Superbowl in the nineties
Agreed SF would have smokes Dallas
@@TheWakeup011they beat them with Grbac earlier that year lol
This is good therapy for Packers fans after last Sunday.
Dallas, SF, and Green Bay all rivals of the 90s.
The first of 3 straight years that Green Bay would knock San Francisco out of the playoffs.
Yep and 98 was sad
One Hell of a block by Brett Jones at 5:48
That was really a brilliant move to have Adam Walker start at FB with a broken arm lol. Just go with one back ffs...Was never a fan of Seifert. Credit to GB though, beating the defending world champs in their backyard is a monumental win.
It’s not unusual to see this great rivalry in the playoffs. 49ers versus Packers. They dislike each other.
The crowd was so loud in this game you wouldn't even know that there was a commentary team
The play Favre makes at 6:11 my God
One of the biggest blunders the Niners did was not resigning Ricky Watters, he was badly missed in this game. Steve Young damn near threw for 60+ times with no running game. No balance whatsoever, also the Niners defense couldn't solve the Packers offence as Green Bay ran the West Coast Offense better than them.
Yep, chinks in the DeBartolo empire were becoming more visible during this time frame...
Hoping for a similar result tomorrow for my Packers. Won't be easy though.
Same that's why I'm watching this and 1997 NFC championship game lmao

Classic matchup. Another awesome upload!
War eagle Auburn
Was only 11 when this game happened but I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember the sense of dread when Jacke had a FG blocked on Green Bays opening drive, thinking it was a foreshadowing of things to come. Then the Walker fumble happened and Green Bay's offense was moving the ball all over. Remember the stunned crowd at halftime as nobody saw this coming, not even Packers fans in their wildest dreams. You knew the 49ers would come out fighting the 2nd half but the defense hounded Young all game.
If only farve didn't throw that ridiculous INT to Larry brown when they were in Dallas the following week we would've went to 3 straight Superbowls
If the niners had a reliable running game, they probably would've been the 1 seed that season. Losing Ricky Watters was a monster blow.
And also William Floyd.
The 95-97 version of Favre was the GOAT
Yep.
95-97 Favre was basically Patrick Mahomes
Tank he would show glimpses after that,
2007(28tds-13ints) Packers finished 13-3.
2009 with the Vikings(33tds-8ints) Vikings finished 12-4.
3:46 Brent Jones just lays out Craig Newsome. Craig might have been talkin too much after that fumble return.
Glory days
The packers put a beat down on Brent Jones all day that day
packers earned the win. But had 49ers had any healthy running backs it would have been interesting.
More Favre pls
When you have Derrick Loville and a one-armed Adam Walker as your starting backfield, you're in trouble. They tee'd off on Young who was getting abused all season. Gotta give it the Pack though, they came into the defending champs backyard and took it from them. Favre at his absolute peak here 95-'97'.
The Adam Walker fumble set the tone for this game. Plus, George Seifert was very bad at game planning. He would do nothing surprising.
I was never impressed with seifert as a coach
Agreed. 49er brass openly courted Holmgren while Seifert was there.
Nah u never know with those teams
GB couldn't stop the run as well as the 49ers so yeah
Last time the niners had those classic jerseys on
Green Bay actually did Dallas a favor by ousting the Niners. Barry Switzer was pretty inept against the Niners (1-3 record), and they already had beaten Dallas earlier in the year at Texas Stadium. And Dallas owned the packers in the 90s, slapping them once again in the NFC championship game a week after this game.
You are exactly right. Dallas dodged a bullet that year to win their 3rd SB in 4 years.
Cowboys always wrecked Favre and Reggie lol
the packers beating the niners this weekend gonna be crazy like this one .. Love legacy game incoming
Who wins tonight?
Brett Favre is 4-1 vs 49ers in the playoffs in the 1990s-early 2000s
1995-W
1996-W
1997-W
1998-L
2001-W
And Aaron Rodgers is 0-4 vs 49ers in playoffs.
Lol
Brett Favre owned Steve Young
You got that right and the 1 time Young won the packers got robbed
The rice fumble?
@@erocs9747 it’s not a common opinion but an incontrovertible fact the refs missed that call & I’m a 49er fan acknowledging that, the next year instant replay was instituted into the nfl
@@chuckdavis2692Favre got so many calls. Stop with that. You know what Steve did the Brett couldn’t? Beat the cowboys. Steve also had the last laugh
The moral of the story: Don't trade Deon Sanders.
The late Fritz Shurmur invented the 4-2-5 defense AKA Big Nickel. Today Nick Saban call it the Cover 7 in college to cover the middle of the field.
Leroy Butler was saying they brought out the 3 4 defense for that game
Have you guys thought about creating a channel whether on UA-cam or on tv of an NFL throwback Channel with original Broadcasts?! I’d pay a monthly fee for that!
I miss watching these teams play look at FAVER AND YOUNG go at it. Faver did not have weapons YOUNG had
Wayne fucking simmons bro. That dude was mean as fuck
Hope we win !
90% of today’s qbs would not be able to withstand the beating young endured in this game
The greatest owning of a team I’ve ever seen in a multi-year stretch, except for the current one involving the same two teams.
And so my hatred of the Packers and #4 began. I still hate those packers teams. So so much.
Freaking Farve owned the 49ers, was it 1 career loss ?
Ur right
As a Cowboy fan, I loved the 90's Packers. These days, not so much.
Well said
Packers 49ers NFC Championship game next week.
6:12 That is one of the most impressive throws ever.
Those old Packer teams were fierce. Newsome seals the deal with a pick at the end. Packers Defense has gotten better over the years. They should watch these old films. For inspiration.
Is it me or you can hear the players on the field clearly? Lol
I was 30 in 1995. I been a California Packer fan since 1980. I had friends who made fun of the Packers in high school and after high school. They were 49er, Raiders, Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins fans. I don't see them anymore, but I wonder about them when they lose to Green Bay. I never imagined the Packers would ever be as good as the days of Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr.
Simply put, Green Bay's D-line whooped San Fran's O-line

I remember this game as a kid. To this day it was the most shocking upset I'd ever seen. As a Niners fan we were 100% sure we were going to win. Green Bay wanted it more, a lot more
The sign at each end zone: "San Franciscans welcome you to the world's most beautiful city." Yeah, that doesn't apply anymore.
When the NFL used to be a great sport we enjoy watching, now is just a great business.
More stars , better comp. it’s better now more money it’s better stfu bitch cuz your still watching
I remember watching as a Cowboys fan and being a little bit relieved they didn’t have to play San Fran in the title game the following week .They had beaten Dallas the last NFC title game and in the regular season that year. I had confidence Dallas would beat GB.

I didn’t like Seifert as a coach, he wasn’t good at preparing the team to play for big games
I feel the same way.
They beat a team that didn't have deion sanders and Ricky Waters. Not much of an upset.
Deion went to Dallas. Ricky went to Philly. You act like they were injured
The niners were the defending super bowl champions
The 49ers were the best team that year. They destroyed my Cowboys at Texas stadium.
I remember this one well. I knew we were going to lose this one despite being 10.5 point favorites.
