Looks good. When I made my ER-40 chuck, I just unscrewed the 4-jaw chuck with the part in it and flipped it around to try the thread. The metric part was difficult as the Atlas thread table had errors. Here's the page on mine: shdesigns.org/Craftsman-12x36/er40.shtml I have some 2" square stock and may make a few more ER-40 chucks.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Great write-up on your project. I'm interested in the fact you used aluminum--how well has that held up over time? Also, nice save with the aluminum welding. That's outside of my capability at the moment.
It worked fine. 6061 is plenty strong enough for a lightweight lathe. The threads have gotten looser but are still tight. Probably that is the chatter in the thread polishing out. I do want a better internal thread tool as the only one I have is a 5/16" bar and chatters.
That's good information to have. I have plenty of aluminum laying around the shop of that size but no steel. I've enjoyed poking around your website--You've got some great projects in there.
Thanks Richard! I'll check my email soon. I spent the 3-day weekend putzing in the shop so didn't get on the computer much. Just popping in now to post a short video.
Great looking threads!
Thanks Jster!
