I think a way to attach the lod to the bottom would be a great addition. Particularly if you would use the lid when travelling. You don't want to lose that
Thanks for the video. I’ve been looking for bit holders for a while. I felt dumb because there’s nothing decent out there and I thought, maybe everyone is leaving them in the drawer
Nice work, James. If the cap is only to protect the sharp ends while traveling, why not just make a box to fit over them and have it sit in a rabbet around the top of the base? This would serve to protect the flutes from getting dinged as well as the cutting edges.
@@WoodByWright I think by "cap" he meant the wooden top you made. He meant you could make a lid out of wood like a 5 sided box that fits over all the bits and goes all the way down to the base, instead of having a place for each bit in the lid. You could add a chunk of foam in the lid to keep the bits from jiggling around during travel.
I don't know why I thought of this, but maybe on the bottom of the bit set. Cut a circle out with a hole saw. And put the piece back in so you can twist it so it makes a leg so it doesn't fall forward or backwards?
Awesome job! Funny thing is I was just designing something similar last night... I wanna make a tool cabinet with a vertical “drawer” that holds the auger bits. But that drawer can be removed and set on the bench. You gave me some ideas, thanks
Interesting video. I have quite a few old auger bits that badly need some TLC and a new case. I don't see why I couldn't adapt this to square shank bits. Thanks for the inspiration.
Looks good! Just messaging to point out that you could have done the stepped design like the others, if you stepped the depths of the holes. I have a bunch of old bits, but I'm thinking I'm going to do them in some kind of folding/tool roll. I like the idea that someone else suggested of adding "sides" (maybe in leather) to your design. Either way nice job!
Love the project. But watch out for that leather - it appears to be kip, a bit thin and also a somewhat loose flesh-side structure. I would use a 3-4 oz latigo for both better strength and better elasticity. (Worked with leather for more than 40 years.) But now I know how to build my own holder, so thanks!
Yup these are just temporary patterns. I talk about that a bit more in the how to version of the video. It was what I had lying around the better stuff will be coming in shortly. this is the leather I use for clamp faces and vice jaws.
Sometimes I prefer to just freehand shoot. It's faster and doesn't require me to set up the shooting board. If it's just one board I usually do that. if it's a handful of them then I'll bring out the shooting board.
The lid being separate makes it easy to lose. Maybe lid that nested under the base, OR a second set of slots in the straps to strap the lid to the base while I. Use so it does not wander off.
Along with this idea, place the lid down first and put some more holes in the leather where they match up with the base. Although it will be very tall.
"Its a bit boring" Boring... Hah! Laughs in Auger. 🤣 Ok, Boomer's attempt at modern humor aside, I just came across a Craftsman Bit and Auger brace today on eBay. Not a bad price either. I look forward to the day that I'm just as boring as you. 🤣 And followed up with Dad jokes! I kill me.
I really didn't need to watch that, I just really wanted to. So soothing.
Thanks.

I actually went and ordered the 11piece bit set, not regretting one "bit" haha! They are great!
All I regret is I didnt get the 1- 1,5 inch bits too!

the problem is with he tight tolerances on those caps it would be almost impossible to get them all into their caps.
@@WoodByWright I don't think I was clear enough in my description. No worries. Have fun with those nice augers.

sweet! sounds like fun!
I love the idea. You could probably put a back on one side or at each ends so that when you put the lid on it travels better.
Very good idea, James, very good!

That would be fun. maybe make a tapered top or base to match the graduating length.
Beautiful james!
I was curious about one of your techniques. Does clicking your jaw to count saw strokes actually help?

LOL lots of people have wondered why I chew my tong. I never notices I did it tell I started shouting videos.
I love your thoughts on oak and walnut vs maple and walnut. I am of a similar mind, finding similar, but different combos.

When will the jars of used head razors be available? Great project!
LOL I like that one!
Bloody hell James did you take out a third and fourth mortgage 😂 to buy all those bits. Regards Jim UK.
LOL something like that! don't tell my wife!
@@WoodByWright I won't, promise.
interesting idea. what is that finish in the jar?
Homemade boiled linseed oil. I have a few videos showing how to make it. I also talk about the application on the how to version on the other channel.
Good design.
Beautiful!

why do you take your wedding band off and put it on the boring bit? what if your wedding band is too tight to remove?
that tells me if the bit is level. I can see side to side but level is hard to tell with out it.
Thanks for sharing that
thanks for watching. and congrats on first!
Great video
Very nice!

James why not tap that hole for the brass knob?
i did not have taps on hand for that thread, but I did have the wood nuts. so I just used what I had.
Nice job, but I’ll, um, pass on buying your wood curls.
I hear some of the cooking channels are selling potato and carrot peelings.
