Pinheaded was surprised by her choice because to them, Lament was more horrific because their suffering as cenobites is far more pleasurable than the suffering of being back in the mundane world they (cenobites) all sought to escape. Cenobites were all people at one point would be regarded as “angels to some and demons to others”. Not all who are taken by the various puzzle boxes are turned into cenobites. Leviathan chooses those he deems worthy of his power. There are multiple puzzle boxes, and the lament configuration is a symbol of the suffering endured by those who would remain as the cenobites would say,” In a mundane existence”. The fact Riley would give up all that “pleasure” was shocking to Pinhead, and in a small way, garnered her respect. All in all, this was a very good reboot from the original Hell Raiser cannon and I appreciated their creative perspective to the franchise👍

That was for me probably the most profound/interesting part of the film. To a Cenobite, human guilt and regret is intolerable compared to flayed flesh and pierced throats.

A big part of why is because of the actress's delivery! I read an interview with her where she stated she initially read the line in a threatening manner before the director gave her the note to say it more like a lullaby. She also interpreted the character as being in agony at every breath but also enjoying that agony. That paired with the brilliant sound design of her breaths made the line so chilling. I think this new movie really captured the way the cenobites are "angels to some demons to others" because they didn't make them one dimensional evil sadists. Which somehow made them all the more terrifying.

It was ABSOLUTELY clear in the movie Voight was NOT in constant pain. ... He chose Liminal. Liminal is Boundary, or Border, Space between. He was exactly at the middle point between absolute infinite pain and normal. He precisely never had time to ever become numb to the pain, It was the exact point where the pain he experienced would be felt the most. Agony... Normalcy... Agony... Normalcy. ... He was torn between places, at the border of the Cenobites existence of infinite pain, and a humans life of normal. The entire point of Voights character and his ending, was to show the "Gift" the Cenobites offer, Experience... and the end of that game, ever increasing to a point of infinite pain... as you cross the "threshold" or Liminal boundary, you become less and less able to feel anything at all. Absolutely Numb to the pain of the universe. This is the point and the gift, existence is a cruel and unyielding place of torment and pain. They offer Salvation from that. At the cost of everything else... they stop understanding anything but pain. Like any divine being, their experience is beyond that any human could possibly understand, and they in turn cannot understand why a human would not want this gift. To be numb to the universes greatest threat, to exist as one with it, and beyond it... IS a gift. To live a normal human experience is to fully hold the weight of that pain and suffering, We live... we lose what we love, We forget what we know, our nerves decay incurring nephropathy, we age losing our bodies, and we ultimately are powerless to all of it. The eventual decay of human existence is like rain drops of agony... slow... eventual... it will consume us. The Cenobites are beyond that, Truly divine rising above the mortal. ... I think if you watch the Movie, this is EXACTLY what Clive Barker was trying to get across to us. To us, Angels are terrifying and horrible creatures, beyond our understanding, beyond our experience, "Be not afraid".

Agreed but credit the humanistic and psychological aspects of Barkers original story are more prevalent in this telling. As far as some of the cenobites being like zombies, remember there is indeed a hierarchy among them just like there is in Hell. The ones that possess more individuality never seem to blunder toward the protagonists as some of the lesser soldier like ones do. Great movie overall for what it was attempting to reignite.

They could kill anyone at any time. When she walked outside, and stood before the Hell Priest, chains could have torn her apart... they did not. This isn't a game, they are not here to be monsters... to the Cenobites, they represent the divine, they show respect, they simply want to share the pain, to gift humanity with the divinity they represent. those who open the box have made a pact, they desire... And the Cenobites are here to assist with that. They are not like Freddy or Jason... they aren't here to just kill. They never just kill. They take time, they chew, they impale, they tear... slowly... painfully... every act is intentional. They aren't trying to scare you, fear is not pain, fear is lack of understanding to them. they are here to teach and share the gift.

From the structure of the story being you have to sacrifice someone to bring the cenobites to this world and you gain power from it. That was similar to what Channard was doing, and both him and Voight were infatuated with the occult. Both became Cenobites. Also the use of addiction and as "who is going to believe you," like the patients at the hospital. Frank only wanted blood and sacrifice to escape Hell and Kirsty made a deal to save herself. This wasn't near what was established in The Hellbound Heart, other than The Hell Priest being feminine.

I actually liked the ending, Riley not choosing a gift was a twist I wasn't really expecting. (Its a horror movie after all) The fact that she lived was cool. I agree tho, I wish we would've gotten to see the other configurations that get granted. I figured if Matt got resurrected, it would be a disfigured/evil version. I really hope they make another movie though, but with a more bittersweet ending. I like protagonists living in the end, but I feel like a Hellraiser movie would be the best for a "bad" ending.

I know im like a year late but I never saw Pinhead or the cenobites being dismayed or surprised at Riley choosing life. Rather, the cenobites seemed pleased or at least neutral about her choice to me.
As pinhead says, their “gifts” are boundless, and it is implied that she means /all/ of their gifts, “Lament” or “Life” included. And every single gift, while straightforward to a cenobite, probably has the “twist” of meaning nothing but pain to a human. The cenobites are just happy she’s feeling the pain of guilt and grief, even if it isn’t the pain they are used to. As the Gasp says, “your suffering has barely begun”.
I think it’s actually even sadder to interpret the scenario as this, rather than Riley managing to surprise the cenobites. She thinks she’s refusing to play their game by trying to refuse a gift, but what really happens basically boils down to “no, you don’t get out of this. You’re playing this game whether you like it or not, and you’ll take your prize.”
    Anyway, I loved this movie

I'm a huge Clive Barker fan (own all the books!) and a huge Hellraiser fan (bought all the DVDs...when that was a thing!). But, I wasn't aware that this was a reboot. In fact, I thought it was a continuation as I could identify some continuity from the previous efforts. Having said that, IMO what new "material" Bruckner has put in place could work really well as fodder for subsequent installments.
Here are my two cents. I believe the Cenobites are actually those who have completed the six configurations and got their "wish." And the pain-inducing devices employed in their transformation relate to their wishes. Let me explain. I could see two other Cenobites (one female and one male) with the same mechanism Voight got for his Limnal (Sensation) wish. Also, the "crucifix" form on which Voight was placed at the end seemed very similar to a crucifix seen on the disks that Pinhead has in her throat. Voight chose Leviathan (Power) which fits with Pinhead since it always seemed that Pinhead was somewhat of an overseer. The sacrifices (or souls collected to feed Lamarchand's box or Leviathan) are just shreds scattered all over their "hell;" still suffering but not really dead.
I liked where it ended and I see the potential for more but here's something that I'd like to see for continuity purposes. IMO, Kirsty Cotton has gotten her way so many times with the box that I think it should come to pass that she' s the female Pinhead, having completed the six configurations and wished for Power. Nice tie to that loose end, right?!!

Riley could end up in a hospital (she indeed has lamented as The Hellpriest said she would and gone kind of crazy) in the sequel, visited by her dead brothers boyfriend for support. He could go to Hell with her. They could eliminate the Doctor Channard character and make Voight the Channard cenobite once Riley decides to go into Hell for one reason or another. It could be she thought she could let go but that she has to go to hell to get her brother because it's driving her crazy, once more emphasizing that The Hellpriest was right when it said she would regret not choosing ressurection. Whatever the case they need to head into Hell for the sequel. There could even be a scene where The Hellpriest taunts Riley by telling her they knew she would eventually come to Hell for her brother.
