Sir, you are a legitimate dude!! This video was EXACTLY what I needed. My head was spinning with ideas of having to sew together a ripstop fabric tent for my project, it never even occurred to me to use a full tarp sheet like this. I have converted the floor of a SWB Transit Connect van to pull out to the extreme length of the open barn doors (with another panel that then flips up to create an enclosed space. Now, with your great advice I can cover the back and have myself a nice little micro-camper. Thank you.
Dude. 1. I never thought of opening up my tailgate and adding that to the usable space. Brilliant. 2. That adhesive zipper. What rock have I been living under? Never knew those existed!! That's a tarp truck camping game changer! This video is exactly what I'm trying to do. Only difference is I've built my frame out of scrap 2x4, just because. Everything else is applicable to what I'm wanting to do, especially shaping the tent to fit around the frame I made. I'm so glad you made this video to show how you did that.
Great idea. Enough to get out of weather. Like any other tent wind may play havoc on you but with extra tape can fix on the fly. Thanks for sharing about the zipper; makes it easier to enter.
Genius! Love this video I was looking for ideas for camping out at an upcoming Renaissance fair in Tennessee. I want to spend money on a hotel and have 2 kids. I plan to attach a 23'x17' tarp to a 10x10 canopy. It's gonna be dope thanks for the video!
Ok this is a pretty great build! A couple suggestions maybe purchase a black or white tarp so your tape matches your tarp. I believe gorilla tape comes in white too. A camouflage tarp with black tape would also look a little less tarpy. If your stick it together with small pieces of tape you can remove it from the truck and use long pieces to make it more uniform. That being said this is quite possibly the best diy truck video I have seen. One thing also you should go on cad and make a pattern for the tent and make it a Available to your patrons or something because it’s really good. I liked and subscribed 😎 keep up the good work!
Awesome build. I have to finagle this design because I have a Tacoma. No holes in the truck bed. I do have a suggestion. Incorporate a mosquito net on the inside.
I just watched another diy UA-camr. And I believe his diy engineering will work well with your design. I’m including the link. I’m going to be using your video and his to make my truck bed tent and the one he made as well! I truly appreciate you taking your time. My children are getting older and I have to seize the rest of the days I have until they leave the nest! ua-cam.com/video/H1516IAqihQ/v-deo.html
Awesome bro looks simple, I like how you made it square and not with a pitch. Makes it easier to assemble and honestly looks cleaner. Hopefully you can show us the finished product in action, maybe a camping video in the future with the setup? Keep up the great videos my dude.
This is really cool. I was thinking of doing this on Edna for my channel and doing a camping adventure. Decided to see if anyone was already doing this and found your video. Thanks so much, I think I have an good idea for how to make my own.
This is an excellent simple build. I've been camping in a regular tent in the bed of my truck and want to upgrade a bit. So im debating on a soft top or a homemade soft top, both are essentially more sturdy tents so it doesn't really matter if its home made or not IMO. A hard topper would be ideal but way too expensive. Anyway these are some great ideas an techniques, great job
Looks great, something to remember is that you’ll have no air flow inside. If it starts raining you can’t prop to tarp up to get any air inside. I made something very similar a few years ago and had the same problem. Other than that it looks great and I hope it works out for you.
I'm wondering how well it holds up to a storm while out camping? I'd love to build this, but I need something that will hold up to a downpour and stormy weather.
Great idea. Do you travel with it installed!? Or assemble it when you get to your destination? You could use a pool noodle slipped over each upright at the square holes to make it fit tighter!
i love the idea, but it could easily be torn into and the zipper function is basically "all access" without any way to lock. Definitely ONLY for camping or if your normally always going to be in a secure area or near it at most all times.
Since it's been 2 years since this was posted, I'm guessing you have discovered what a flawed design this was. If not, then you likely haven't used it in any kind of serious rain. There is a reason why every commercially-made tent ever built has a steeply sloped top, typically either an a-frame or some kind of dome design. Same reason nearly all homes have steep roofs. The last thing you want in any kind of shelter is a roof that allows for the collection of water. What you made here was essentially a giant bird bath waiting to be filled.
Interesting take, but I’d still choose this over a couple thousand dollar tent if I just needed something quick and easy in good weather conditions. Not everyone goes camping in snow, rain or “bad” conditions. Which is what is was designed for.

So glad it gave you some ideas and that you’re building one yourself! Thank you for the support!
The self adhesive zippers were new to me as well. Then when I looked into it turns out illegal weed growers have been using them for years! 😂😂

I wanted to add some sort of tie down for that very reason. Just so wind wouldn’t blow it away.
turned out great, looks like more room than standard camper shell
Thank you! Yes very spacious!
BRILLIANT MATE. YOU THINK LIKE ME... WELL DONE...

If you gonna make it square make one side higher than other in case it rains
@@xgymratx yes. If it rains it will pond on top until it collapses.

Awesome! I’ll have to check it out when you get it done!
A project that never ends. Windows, lights, a heater, carpet. Nice out at the nearest lake. Great job. Texas.
You can use rare earth magnets on the outside of the tarp to help secure the tarp to the body of the truck.
That’s a good idea!!
Just what I was looking for. I liked the way you put the video together, great job all around. Thank you

Good job just used your link to get the zipper going to do this on my cargo trailer thanks.

With a little reinforcing and more of a way to strap it to the truck, should be good to go!
I did the same thing but with a ridge/pitch pole on top like a roof because when it rains it will collect and cave in the middle
Did you have it connected to the side poles or was it support by the middle of the bed?
Great idea. Do you travel with it installed!? Or assemble it when you get to your destination? You could use a pool noodle slipped over each upright at the square holes to make it fit tighter!
I like that idea! I don’t travel with it installed, I made it to utilize the bed still.
Great idea, except if it rains when you’re camping the flat roof will let water pool until it collapses on you. Happy Camping!
It isn’t flat, there’s an angle to it for that reason.
I'm subscriber number 98 looking forward to seeing this in use.
Better than a $1000 soft topper!
Thank you! Hopefully it inspires people tot ru and build their own!
This looks like a great idea does it have any problems staying up while driving? That would be my only concern lol imma try it out tho
Yeah I wouldn’t recommend while driving, it will most likely fly away! You’ll have to let us know tho 😂
Hi handsome. Great channel and product. Thanks ❤
Thanks!
Love the DIY but you can buy a truck tent for your model for about $100 and even cheaper on sale. Great video. Thanks
You can?! I must have missed it!

Wow I like this
Thank you!
@@lukeshaia I’m gonna try it and post my results Your Welcome
Awesome! I look forward to see how it turns out!
Add a center pvc pipe. Nice job.
Thanks!
Lol I knew you were in utah by the tiny glimpse of the mountains
Hahaha
Awesome!!
pretty cool... only that zipper must leak in the rain....
I haven’t had any issues 🤷🏽♂️
Great job
Thank you!
nice and simple
Nice concept, but I am concerned with the flat roof.....any rain is gonna pool up and cause a lot of weight strain on that PVC
Yeah, that’s why I added a decline on one side. Another good option is to add another crossmember in the middle.
Water will puddle in the middle. Make it peak in the middle 🥷
The driver side has 2” of length on the passenger side so that there is a slope. I haven’t tried it with water, but I think that should do the trick.
How do you plan on stopping rain water from pooling on top?
One side is 2” taller for water to drain off.
@@lukeshaia Does it work? Have you been in the rain with it? It doesn't seem like that would be enough with nothing in the middle....just saying....
Shuold have used T's in the Middle of side to side. then a length in the middle front to back. but that works.
I thought about doing that, but once I had it all together I felt like it was sturdy enough to my liking.
Hummm taking it down to store? Great idea though
Thank you! I wanted to be able to utilize the truck bed for other needs.
What bed rack system were you thinking of getting that was $600. I have a Ranger and would be interested in looking to see what it is.
It’s from Tuff Stuff 4x4, it’s adjustable in width and they have 2 different lengths.
@@lukeshaia thanks. Btw I subbed to you a little while ago. Keep the ranger videos coming. Your going to blow up one day
@@hamphollifield6133 appreciate it!!
Nice...are you in Sea Side Calif?
No, I'm not.
You need to get powerful magnets to hold so the wind doesn't blow it out or blow it over
That’s a good idea!
How hot does it get in the summer months? Is it unbearable with no ventilation
I would recommend some ventilation and/or a fan for summer months.
Do you take it down every time you drive or leave it up?
It was built to be taken down and put up in only a few minutes. I wanted to still be able to utilize the bed for other things when not camping.
Yee yee 😎
Dope!
Thank you!
sickkkkkk bro
Thank you!!
With a flat roof like that it won't shed rain it'll puddle and then of the weight will cave it in
It isn't flat 😉
@@lukeshaia sorry my bad... Looks flat brother
@@johnbouwens2024 No worries, it's subtle.
nice
Thanks!
Glue gun would work on the tarp too
I'll have to give that a try next time!
cool
Thank you!
Must be in the desert that flat top tarp will never support a pool of water that will accumulate during even a light rain
It isn’t flat, but you’re always welcome to make it more slanted for yourself!
not bad
Thanks!
