You can streamline your hand washing just a little bit more by using a wool wash that doesn't need to be rinsed. I'm a hand knitter and many/most of us use something like Eucalan or Soak for our fine hand knits. Plus they come in lovely fragrances or fragrance-free. Alisha Rocks mine pressed my metal buttons in so the other side of the jacket had marks from the heat on the metal buttons! I still kick myself for not just washing it in the washing machine in a gentle setting :(( compensated but ruined 😭
No kidding! I took a wool code I bought at a Goodwill for $15 to a dry cleaner and paid more than $15 to have it “dry cleaned” and the dude shrunk it. I didn’t know that was possible… I take care of everything at home now. I’ll risk it even if it says dry clean only.
A success story: bought a pair of pants that looked like some sort of solid black vertical crepe and I washed on the delicate cycle cold water and it came out just fine! Hung it up and dried great! Have washed it several times! Still looks good! Dry clean only? Not that one!
I work in the fashion industry as a product developer. 60% of the time, the reason something is dry-clean only is trims. Either the trim finish gets damaged quickly in water wash, or the trim damages the fabric or other trims in wash - even by hand. Other than that, it is usually fabric delicacy and dye running. There are LOTS of things that are dry clean only that can be handwashed - and I handwash most of mine at home. Sometimes, though, it is internal construction and in those cases you will likely damage the make and drape of your garment if you hand wash it. If you have a structured dress or jacket, just take it to the dry cleaners.

My dry cleaning story is: I had a dress that had pleats all around the bottom. I took it to the Dry Cleaners like the label said to do. The next time I wore it someone commented, "you burned your dress!" No not me, I didn't realize it when I put it on, but the Dry Cleaners had scorched my dress when they pressed the pleats. Totally ruined an expensive dress.

I have a silk blouse that I wash in the washing machine, it's very difficult to get the creases out once dry, so if I'm not ready to iron it when it comes out the washing machine, I put it in a zip lock bag in the fridge and leave it there until I'm ready, it's still damp many days/weeks later and it can be freshly ironed at m convenience.
I have been washing my dry cleaning for years. I've even washed my leather jacket twice. Now for my dry cleaning story. Many tears ago, I took my outfit in without any odors. I actually received dry cleaning that had bo. It didn't go in that way. When I returned to report it, the dude yelled at me saying I wore it....which I didn't. He refused to re clean it. I never returned. Needless to say, the business is no longer opened.
Got a love customer service that yells at you! Over the holidays at my moms,They shrunk my wool coat!?! I picked it up put it on, and it didn’t button anymore…Was like a child’s coat. I went back in there and the dude argued with me saying he didn’t shrink it… I didn’t pay much for the coat, Wanted a dry clean to remove lint;;;was a quality coat and I was really upset. I brought two of my husband's suits to the dry cleaners. When I went to pick them up, it was all boarded up and there was a sign that they were closed due to a fire! I brought in the matching top for comparison and I was told since they didn’t know what it looked like when I brought it in, they refused to accept responsibility. I use laundry bags that can fit 2 bras (good fit of bras to bag pls, bigger bag is not better). The bras must be stacked (like how they are stored in the drawers at VS) when I place them in the bag. @#CleanMySpace what about towels/garments that have a dampish/musty smell?? i bought a new set of towels from Kohls may be last Dec over Christmas break since my other set wasn't absorbing as well. for a while, we would hang them up instead of throwing in the dryer. for a while it was working, but after a while, starting in Sept this year, the towels starting getting this dampish/musty smell on them. so now we only hang to dry may be every other week and then put in dryer every other week.
I have found that adding about a cup of white vinegar to every load of towels, then drying them in the sun when possible, helps to keep towels smelling fresh.😁
Unless you are washing them right away hang them to dry after use. Then when you do wash them put vinegar in as a fabric softener and got water, this should kill the bacteria causing the smell. Then you can just put them in the dryerput them in the dryer to dry. This is what I have done and I have never had any musty smell once cleaned
Musty smell could also be from your washing machine. Air it by leaving the door/lid open all year round. Vinegar instead of fabric softener will get rid of the smell. A few drops of lavender oil in the vinegar will also kill bacteria that cause the smell
i have told that to my mom, but she doesn't seem to have interest in doing this. it's one of those "if it's not her idea, it's not good enough" thing. i did buy these towels from Kohls, so may be they are a higher quality of brand/material.
I'm so bad. I throw everything in the washing machine. The delicate cycle is my best friend. I know, I'm sad and bad. I have a top loader without an agitator. I use a 2 in 1 baby shampoo on wool and silk and leather!! The PC brand is my current favourite. I even washed my ROOTS bag this way and just needed to oil it really well after it dried. My sad story is that I am way too adventurous and used to throw a silk blouse that I had in the dryer. This makes the silk way more delicate...I do not recommend drying silk in the dryer...Now I'm following the laying flat method that you recommend! I have been eyeing The Laundress products for a while and did not know that they were easily available in Canada. I will definitely give them a try!
I wash my labcoat at home it's never sparkling white, instead it turns gray, I end up buying new ones 😔 *please show us how to get sparkling white laundry without damaging them* 🙏
Hi, I had a chase to meet a skirt which can't be dry clean also washed. Skirt was from Zara, Scottish design, pleated and I was wondering how should a clean it. Never seen item like this before, also I managed to shrink sweater, sckarf's because I had looked at the label late.
I had a lovely lavender wool sweater that got accidentally thrown in the dryer. It of course shrank. And to the point that I couldn't wear it any longer. My 10 year old cousin was delighted to get that sweater that year. Drat it.
could you do a video on airwashing dryclean only clothes? Because I have that feature on my samsung but I'm scared to try it. Or could anyone else tell me their experience with it?
I took my Brother's (wool, i think)sweater and washed it... It came out fine... I forgot to dry it flat, accidentally tossed it in the dryer and it shrunk to like a toddler size sweater 😳😮😱😟 He didn't get mad because i was the one who had bought it for him😁 i was wondering if you have a video on cleaning patent leather(or shiny) men's dress shoes(yes my Brother's, i don't want to mess up his shoes😬) Btw, love your videos
All they do is mask odors. They don't really clean. I bought one of those kits; never again. Now I just hang my stuff (on hangers) on a wreath hook on my back door with the storm-door screen open to air them out in the fresh air.
Wait... How did you know?!!! I was just THINKING about how I can clean my "heavily warned against washing" wool jacket at home. What sorcery is this?! 😳

A few drops of lavender oil in the vinegar will also kill bacteria that cause the smell
i have told that to my mom, but she doesn't seem to have interest in doing this. it's one of those "if it's not her idea, it's not good enough" thing. i did buy these towels from Kohls, so may be they are a higher quality of brand/material.
i usually hang them to dry right after use. and the fan is usually on during that time.
I wish you were my neighbor..you're videos are the best. Cheers to white vinegar and baking soda :)
Hi Melissa, I would love to hear tips on how to use a portable washing machine without the spin cycle terrorizing everyone on the block.
Sweetness leather? I have a soft leather jacket I’m wanting to sell but is needing a clean. Would it go on a delicate cycle without damage?
I wash my labcoat at home it's never sparkling white, instead it turns gray, I end up buying new ones 😔
*please show us how to get sparkling white laundry without damaging them* 🙏
Hajer yes!
Try oxyclean
Peter Petrakis
ok thanks, I don’t know if I can get that in the UK, I’ll have a look. It’s maybe just called something else.
@@kellsmum1 I'm pretty sure it's called Vanish oxy-white in Europe, at least that's what I use on my whites and I havent ruined them yet :)
carlylive Thanks!
Hi, I had a chase to meet a skirt which can't be dry clean also washed. Skirt was from Zara, Scottish design, pleated and I was wondering how should a clean it. Never seen item like this before, also I managed to shrink sweater, sckarf's because I had looked at the label late.
15 years ago I had a pink cashmere tank top. My ex accidentally dried it in the dryer. I never forgave him.
Oh no! Always lay flat to dry :)
Yes! Finally you speak for this lol, I really really don’t like dry clean cuz it just doesn’t feel like any clean has been done to the clothes😂
What's that steamer that you were using? I'm in the market for a smaller steamer that won't take up as much room!
How do you keep your whites, white and colors, bright??
Yes use water on a fabric that tells you NOT to…. Because that make so much sense….
I had a lovely lavender wool sweater that got accidentally thrown in the dryer. It of course shrank. And to the point that I couldn't wear it any longer. My 10 year old cousin was delighted to get that sweater that year. Drat it.
I can relate
could you do a video on airwashing dryclean only clothes? Because I have that feature on my samsung but I'm scared to try it. Or could anyone else tell me their experience with it?
I took my Brother's (wool, i think)sweater and washed it... It came out fine... I forgot to dry it flat, accidentally tossed it in the dryer and it shrunk to like a toddler size sweater 😳😮😱😟
He didn't get mad because i was the one who had bought it for him😁 i was wondering if you have a video on cleaning patent leather(or shiny) men's dress shoes(yes my Brother's, i don't want to mess up his shoes😬)
Btw, love your videos
Windex! LOL
What about polyester and elastane?
Love your videos but that background music with the snapping noise made me think your little girl had a toy in with you.
Do you have an opinion about those 'dry clean' sheets that you can use in the dryer at home? I've never used them but wonder how they perform.
All they do is mask odors. They don't really clean. I bought one of those kits; never again. Now I just hang my stuff (on hangers) on a wreath hook on my back door with the storm-door screen open to air them out in the fresh air.
Mellisa make new videos on care of cloths
great thoughts thank you for sharing this.
I love that plant! I want one!
Wait... How did you know?!!! I was just THINKING about how I can clean my "heavily warned against washing" wool jacket at home. What sorcery is this?! 😳

Dry Cleaning is how I make a living and provide for my family.
To each their own.
Thank you
My coat is dry clean only.
But thats waaaaay to expencive.
I use a vinegar spray for odor removel. And some water for spot cleaning :D
At my son's wedding the new bride spilt lemon mousse on the deep red dress, dry clean only, so I hand washed this full length raw silk and taffeta heavily embroidered and embellished dress, the only problem was that to dry it I needed to hang it over the shower rail but I fell and broke my heel bone.
I work hard but I'm very low maintenance and enjoy every moment of free time I can get. I refuse to buy anything that needs to be dry cleaned 😂😂😂
I like this videos i like clean i am from barcelona spain 😃🙏👍
Hello from Toronto!! 🙏

Any tips to freshen oversized heavy comforters when you just can't afford to send them to the cleaners? I have a king/queen size heavy comforter w/the heavy cording around the edges. In fact, (dh nor I) can sleep under it & have to fold it down to the end of the bed bc we have such terrible neuropathy that it's downright painful to lay under. It would cost upwards of $75 to have it professionally cleaned. I've sprayed it w/Febreze, & I have left it in the sun for a few hours or so but it has been such a wet year this past year & running back & forth w/my mil, who has been in such bad health this past year, I'm just exhausted, hurting (stress fractures returned along w/new issue w/achilisitis & possible bursa tear. Am waiting on appt w/specialist to learn just how bad it is. spent last year in & out of casts & don't relish the thoughts of that again. It's alls courtesy of multiple autoimmune diseases). Thank you for the tips. I've sort of been binge watching/listening & making notes as well as putting a lot of what I've learned, albeit many I already knew but I have learned a great deal, to work.
Hi there! We have just the thing for bedding. Check out The Laundress Clean Talk Blog for washing down comforters and more! www.thelaundress.com/clean-talk-blog/get-down-with-washing-down-bedding.html
Very helpful.
*If it doesn't survive what I do to it, then the item isn't worth it. Life is short!!!* There are some great things that deserve a good handwashing, but I don't have any 😂😂♥️
