- Jesper Fast had a goal and an assist and Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook chipped in with a pair of assists each as the Carolina Hurricanes cruised to a 5-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semi-Finals series.

I'm so impressed with this Canes team. All the injuries and it's like no big deal. Deep deep club.

Easily the best defensive team left in the playoffs, and with capable veteran players, and hot goaltending...if they can cut down on a few penalties, they have the makeup to go deep...Nice to see a team built for playoff hockey.
Not going to happen. Canes took a lot of stupid penalties last year in playoffs and doing it again. They won't learn a thing if those penalties cost them games or a series like last year.

В оптимальном составе Каролина, особенно после вылета Бостона и Тампы, имела бы все шансы на большой финал. А так придется продираться на зубах, хотя видим. что система Бриндамора в плей-офф хорошо работает даже при серьезных кадровых потерях.

Right? It was particularly awesome seeing Pavelski have himself a helluva game the other night against Seattle.
I remember when everyone in sports announcing and shows said that NC was not a good spot for a hockey team. That it would never catch on, and the team would have to move after 3 seasons. Here we are in the playoffs AGAIN! And it looks like NC will have a hockey team for decades to come! GO CANES!!!!!!
One game at a time. Happy the boys won but its on to game 2. No looking beyond it and no looking back. The Devils already proved in round 1 that they can come from behind and so did the Panthers. Carolina is a different animal though. Stay focused.
In other words, to paraphrase movie director Peter Jackson, they need to play game 2 just like game 1, only better.

A Great start but they took their foot off the pedal moving forward.

I do think Sportsnet's editor is getting better overall. He's still young, so you don't to put too much pressure on him.

NJ had ONE shot in the first period, and only cause they dumped the puck in at Anderson.
ESPN stat facts said it was the first time that had happened in the post season since the 90s, and the first time ever a team only had 8 shots by the end of the 2nd, crazy if true but we all know how accurate ESPN stat facts can be

For a while in the game the Canes had more goals than the Devils had shots on goal. That's not good, New Jersey. Better fix that if you want to advance.

When the Pens and the Caps fix their problems, the goon Islanders will drop back into obscurity and will miss the playoffs for a decade or two.

Also at least he’s played more playoff games in one and a half games this year than the Buffalo Sabers as a team played in years.

Looked like NJ boys vs Canes men. Complete domination other than about 5mins in the 2nd. Could've easily been 8-1. Not a Canes fan, but hard not to root for Brind'Amour, Burns, Staal, Ghost, etc.

This will be an easy sweep for the Canes. Their style cannot be defended against. Doesn't even matter if they're short handed, they pressure and attack for 60 minutes. You have no time to think, move the puck or breathe. Devils look confused and afraid. Their "star" rookie goalie has been figured out. Gonna be a sweep, and an embarrassment for the Devils.

…and concussions are real, debilitating, and can end player's careers. There is a reason they are now mandatory, and this updated rule change was luckily made before any major occurrence instead of waiting for some guys life and/or career was irrevocably affected and then done a "bit" too late.

this fallen helmet rule is stupid, just let him play until the next whistle for example or when the puck is out of the his own defending zone.
The rule used to be that he could play until the whistle, or until the player returns to the bench anyway, whichever came first. Once the player was on the bench, he couldn't come off it again until he had another helmet on. They just recently changed it to "the player must leave", presumably to prevent injuries, but perhaps also to encourage players to tighten their chin straps so that their helmets don't come off so often to begin with.
I still think that they should loosen up the new rule a bit and better define it, and perhaps this goal will give them reason to review the rule again. My suggestion would be that if a player loses his helmet in his defensive zone while the puck is also in the defensive zone, then he doesn't have to go to the bench until either he or the puck crosses the blue line, or the center ice red line if it is a period with the long change.
@@jeremykraenzlein5975 yea exactly, i hate the fact that the defending player has to leave when the play is not near him BUT the puck is still in his defensive zone. That means the defending team will be one player down at a very vulnerable time, almost like a power play. I wish they change it, because like you said, it should still be allowed to play IF the puck is still in his defensive zone. The rule says he can still put the helmet back one asap, chin strap or no strap, but he shouldn't be forced to just leave his defensive zone just because of a the stupid helmet came off
@@bludika Yes, the new rule is that he has to immediately either return to the bench or put his helmet back on. The problem is that either one takes time and leaves the player out of position for a few seconds, and in the defensive zone goals against can happen very quickly, like one did in this play.
Also, I am not aware of any case where it has happened yet, but the current rule allowing the player to remain so long as he is directly part of the play seems too vague to me, and I expected that some players would end up in the penalty box due to disagreement with the ref over exactly what that means. The modified rule as I suggested above would be clearer.
@@jeremykraenzlein5975 yea i hate it too. I say just let them play UNTIL the puck leaves the defending zone IF the defending player loses his helmet, one bad bounce and it lands on the stick of the offensive player, then 1 quick wrist shot turns into a goal that fast, i hate this current rule.
Are we cruising towards a Canes/Knights Finals? Haven't seen a game where a team looked as dominating as the Canes did in this one. Will be interesting to see if the Devils have any pushback in game 2, because they had nothing in this one.

Horrible effort from the Devils. The Canes do have a great defense sure, but 1 shot in one and a half periods is one of the poorest postseason efforts I've seen in a while from any team

Hurricanes have been underrated all year despite having the 2nd highest ranking. Canes will have home team advantage the remainder of the playoffs but people write them off. Most people have the Devils winning but the same happened in round 1 againt the Islanders. Also, for some reason, broadcasters barely talk about the Hurricanes and seem to know very little about the team.
