    Jarod Berger Hey there.
    1. Living on base is like a small city. Everything you need is on base. The chow hall, housing, your job, a gym, a dry cleaners, a barber shop and a grocery store are all in your very own "gated community" lol. You can come and go as you please, and the gyms are usually open 24-7 to accommodate the different schedules. So it's pretty simple.
    2. Yes, you have free time. The quantity and regularity of your free time depends on your job though. Most jobs are 40 hour a week jobs from 7-3, 3-11, or 11-7. So anytime you aren't at work- you're on free time. Some jobs however will have you work 3 days consistently and have 3 days off. And then 2 days on and 2 days off. But the same with that- whenever you're not at work, you can do whatever you want. Fish, bowl, hunt, go to the mall, go to the club, a bar, chill out in your room, whatever. As long as it's not illegal, of course lol.
    3. Well, I'm a maintainer, so I work a weird schedule, but here it is:
    I wake up around 9am. I make breakfast, get dressed, go to the gym around 10-11. Finish with the gym around 12. Go to my room, shower, eat lunch and then get on the computer and watch Netflix or check my channel. Then I'll grab my packed dinner and leave for work around 2:15-2:30 (I have to be there at 3, which means we have to be there at 2:45). I get to work.... I work. lol. I get off at 11, but I actually get off whenever my sergeants tell me I can leave. I get in my room around 12 midnight and I'll take a shower. I'll usually get on my computer for an hour or so before going to bed, and the next morning I'll wake up around 9 and start it all over again.

      WildBlueYonder Do they pay for your Apartement? Or dorm rooms?

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому +1

      The pay for your dorms comes out of your BAH stipend, or Basic Allowance for Housing. If you lived off base, then you would receive BAH to pay for rent, but while on base, they take the whole of your BAH to pay for your dorm

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому

      Yes, it essentially comes out of your check

    Soooo.....I was there in 1987 and I PROMISE YOU...y'all have it GOOD! My dorm was actually OFF post, about 5 miles or so further than what used to be the airport. There was the old 91st Strategic Hospital and one male and one female dorm and a hanger for medical supplies. The End. I'm glad you have those beautifully built 2012 dorms! I'm so jelly, but so happy for y'all! :)

    I was at Minot From 97-99. I left FireFighter Tech School at GoodFellow AFB TX in July the temp was 100 degrees and when I got to Minot it was 40 degrees in the summer. Being from Jersey I thought I knew Cold, YEA OK BUDDY! You don't know Cold until you get Stationed at Minot. Just wait until that first Snow hits hahahaha! I lived at the Dorm right by the Burger King haha BK Big Fish saves you from Cabin fever Brother ... We got snowed in a lot so I was the King of John Madden NFL on the Play Station in the Dorm. Thanks for the Post! Brought back some good memories....... Fire Dawg Out!

    Big improvement from when I was in 1978-82. Single guys shared one small room with no kitchen and shared a communal dorm bathroom. It was a pain if your roommate worked a different shift as you were always waking each other up or trying to stay quiet while the other was sleeping. To have your own room with a bathroom, small kitchen and laundry is a real nice setup.

    • @rhondanelson4858

      Yes! I remember that dorm. Those rooms were soooo small, and there was a bunk bed for two airmen to share and the communal bathroom shared by four.

    I don't want to date myself but when I was at Minot in 1965 the concept of private rooms was new in the AF. The base was only a few years old and the Cold War was going on. Glad to see the young boys have it so nice now all we had was the long hall way and common bathrooms with 3 to a room.

    Wished I had all this in my barracks in 1968. We had the bare basics, wall locker, bunk, bathroom (which was shared with the next room.) In Vietnam 70-71 we had a plywood shack and concrete floor and had to walk to the latrine. The shack did keep the monsoon rain and sun off of us. Great video.

    I was at Minot from 1984-1992 doing Missile security. This dorm is not even close to what I had. First time in the dorms was two per room and a common bathroom for half the floor. The second time was after my divorce. One per room with a shared bathroom with the room next door. I had no complaints about minot AFB (except maybe the bone shattering cold!). Thanks for your service and remember Minot is what you make of it, not what others tell you it is!

    How I got to your videos I really don't know, but I'm an Air Force Vet "Desert Storm" days and I'm loving all of your videos I will go back and thumbs up on all of them. Of course we didn't have anything like this as far as technology even being in the Comm Squadron. Don't get me wrong, we ALWAYS had it better then the other branches. We had our own dorm room but we shared a bathroom with the suite on the other side. LOL They called us the Chair Force. They were jealous. So proud of you! From the DMV also. Please go Overseas! You will appreciate the U.S. even more. When you get out, bring your knowledge and skills here to Capitol Hill! Enjoy your military career! There was a saying...Why not Minot?! But you will meet friends at every base. The funniest thing is when you go home for visits, people are doing the exact same things and you have seen and learned so much in such a little time. My 3 boys are in college but there's something about the military that I want them to experience as young men. There's something special about Veterans. We always look out for each other! Keep sharing your knowledge you are extremely informative; therefore, say SUBSCRIBE at the end of your messages! :) Signed MykidsmomVA. Your mother must be proud!

    Holy shit, those places are nice !
    I was there from '81 to '85. Started out in one of the really old dorms, then in bldg 215, as you face the chowhall on the street, it was the first building to the left. I thought that was nice, newly built, but your building is FAR better. You have a BK on base ? We didn't, so it was usually the crappy chowhall or the bowling alley, because we didn't have any kitchen facility in the dorm. Pizza hut ( Barf ) delivered from town.
    Not complaining at all, mind you, glad you guys have these things. You need that serving at a base like Minot, with the horrible cold weather, and not the most exiting city to live near, and the boring country side.
    I don't know if its Been upgraded since, but even back then the best part of the base was the gym.

    • @rhondanelson4858
      @rhondanelson4858 2 роки тому

      I was there in 87, and I don't know about the chow hall on base because we were about 15 miles down the highway at the old hospital off base, and our chow hall was IN that hospital. HOWEVER, I DO remember the bowling alley because that's where I went DAILY for lunch. They had the best wings and fries known to mankind! I think it was mostly in the sauce!

    I was there 40 years ago and times they have changed, from Common Bathrooms to privet rooms with a Bath, and you can now cook in your room? we had to hide our cook ware LOL and no members of the opposite sex in the dorm ( I did not say room I said Dorm) or at least past the front hall, you have is sweet and am so glad they have made it so nice for you. I saw you were in FMS I was too (5TH FMS) was a Corrosion Control Specialist in the largest hanger on base which was fun the the Blizzards came through, we had to pull all the planes in and thaw them out, but then we got to go to the PUB ( The Airman's Club) and that was great enlisted or non-com that was the place to be, then make midnight meal at the chow hall the best food any were guess you can tell I have found memories of Minot and
    I hope you will too

    1. Thanks for making the videos man, they are very helpful and informative.
    2. Thank you for serving our country. Not sure if you get that a lot but thanks!
    3. My real reason for commenting is my question, which is why so many airmen talk about minot as one of those bases you really don't want to be at? I know about these rumors because I have recently sworn in and leave for basic training for the Air Force in January and have heard many of the R.A.P. Airmen say this.

    Wow! Quite a change since I was stationed there as a B52H Crew Chief from 9/89-4/93! I got kind of lucky though at the time. I was assigned to a newly renovated dorm at that time (which according to Google Maps no longer exists - it was to the right as you walked out of the Chow Hall at the end of the parking lot). In '93 I PCS'd to Whiteman AFB on the B-2's. Everything on Whiteman was being built brand new! I don't think the new Commissary at Minot was open yet when I left. The BK has always been there though.

      Doug Espinosa keep THINKING that.... I was an airforce wife and because the airforce doctors and nurses lacked so much training, the horrible medical care caused me to go into labor at only 4mos pregnant, and had it not been for St Joseph's Unimed medical hospital (off base), there's no doubt that my baby would've died ON BASE by the hands of those military cunts shortly after delivery. If you're not a high ranking officer, they DO NOT TAKE CARE OF YOU & The spouses are treated like shit. Don't let these videos fool you. Most times these folks post these videos falsely advertising the military in an effort to lure in new recruits

You have your over washer/dryer stack, 2 burners, vent hood, your own bath,shower, no tub, but just a stand up shower. Pretty nice set up for single airmen, cable ready and Internet ready, but bought my own wi-fi; lot faster downloads.

    How easy was it for you to meet new people and make friends one you arrived at your first duty station? I think that's the only thing that bothers me at this point. The thought of being alone in a new place, and not have anyone. Are you assigned roommates randomly or is it by rank or something of that sort?

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому +10

      Briana Payne Well, here, you're assigned randomly and I think they do that purposefully so you make friends outside of your workplace. But don't be too nervous. Remember that you and everyone on base have one thing in common: you're in the Air Force!! It's so easy to make friends by just opening yourself up to your coworkers and people you meet.
      "What's your AFSC?"
      "How long have you been in?"
      "What made you join?"
      etc. we all have been through the same stuff- so it's easy to strike up conversations.

    Excuse what i said earlier about saying minot is a horrible base
    During the 1960s and 1970s, the vast majority of nuclear weapons in the United States were located in North Dakota. Minot Air Force Base was a major Strategic Air Command facility, hosting intercontinental ballistic missiles, bombers, and refueling planes. (In other words, everything you need to start the apocalypse.) Accordingly, had North Dakota seceded from the United States it would have become the third-largest nuclear power in the world.
    For people who appreciate history.. This base seems like a big part of it

    What dorm number is your dorm? Picturing it my head, 217 had to be torn down to fit yours it. It seems like it to me anyway, I could be wrong. When did you get to Minot ?

    And could I suggest that you do a video about your specific AFSC? As far as the difficulty of tech school, your impressions of what the job will be like, and any tips you might have for someone who might want to work in the mechanical field.

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому

      Jesse Allen I'm not sure if I can really record much of my job because a lot of the interesting action is on the flightline or in a jet (you can't bring cameras out there) but I've been looking into it. Thank you for the suggestion. But if you want to be a mechanic.. well it's a rough life lol. Long days, dirty hands, and you'll come home with a particular smell of oil, sweat, and grease. If that's what you like--- well then you'll love maintenance haha

    I was there back in 2005 and I don't know if you've seen the older dorms or not but doesn't it seem a bit smaller than the old dorms? I lived in Dorm 211 across from the gas station. Plus all that white would drive me crazy like an insane asylum. Maybe if you had the curtains open it would have a different feel to me. Love the entrance and Pool Table Room. Was that one washer/dryer yours or for an entire floor? hahahaha I hope not! Good Luck to ya and thank you for your service.

    Is the pay per rank the same through out every branch of military? Like will a SPC in the army make the same as an SrA in the air force?

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому

      +1uhot426 We all get paid about the same base pay. An Air Force SrA would make $1946+, A Lance Corporal in the Marines would make $1916+, a Specialist/Corporal in the Army would make $1999+ and finally a Petty Officer Third Class in the Navy would earn $2019+ a month.

      +hallercory Awesome, good luck to you. Glad to see you're enjoying the content. Yeah they're fanbase is amazing! I don't know anyone personally with an intel job. I knew one guy at BMT but I haven't seen or heard from him since. I know that their training is pretty rigorous but the job is extremely rewarding. You earn 39 college credits from tech school alone- so that's pretty impressive. I'm sure it's not unlike most Air Force jobs. You'll probably have a somewhat typical work schedule and lifestyle. I don't know if they deploy or not either. I would assume your job would be stateside.

    So, You're at Why Not Minot? How do you like it? I heard back then that Minot was worst place to be at in CONUS. And Langley was the best. But that was awhile back then according to AF Times. And BTW, you did a real good job with the presentation. Nothing much had changed since I was in.

      Well, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself there. And I heard that Elmendorf is pretty nice. I got in a long time ago. Actually I joined active in 84. First assignment was at Norton. They're closed now. But it was real decent. In 88, I went to Saudi for a year, Then I finished it off at Charleston until 94. Now, I've been doing military contracting off and on. I'm in Afg now. Well, good luck and hope you'll enjoy the rest of your tour and hopefully you'll make a carrer out of it. Take care.

      Lou Jones My AFSC is pretty fun. We get to do exciting things on a daily basis and have to constantly problem solve and adapt and overcome to execute our mission. Maintenance, next to being a pilot or something, in my opinion is one of the best jobs in the Air Force (some people would disagree lol). My AFSC is 2A6X3 by the way

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому +6

      UnderRestrains There's people who will find something to complain about, no matter what base they're stationed at. I've even met people who were stationed in Italy and they didn't like it! -___- But Minot is actually not that bad. It's cold as hell in the winter, but that's why they make coats. I like it here, I like the B-52 (the aircraft I work on) and I like the people I work with. It's up to you to find something about where you are that's fun and keeps you motivated. For me I have my UA-cam channel and volunteerism- for others it's fishing and hunting, etc. So, yes, if you wanna be a Debbie Downer, then yeah Minot is gonna suck, but for me I don't mind it at all.

    Are the dorms in Tech School set up for internet? Who would be the internet service provider for Sheppard AFB? Only asking because I know you had Tech School there and my son will insist on internet even though I will tell him what you said. • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому +2

      DemolitionGirl7 Yes you can have internet in tech school, but like I said- it isn't worth it much unless you will be at tech school for a few months. In order to get internet/tv in your dorm room do you just call a provider to come in and install it? Would I just buy a wifi router and have it hooked up or would I have to do it myself?

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому +1

      Adriana B Good question, you just call a company of your choice and a provider will usually have employee's with base access. They'll come and do all the installation for you. And as far as wifi routers- you can either buy your own and plug it up or lease one from the provider and they'll hook it up for you

    I grew up on Minot AFB. My dad was stationed there from 1984-1992. Is your dorm near the base pool? I'm sure things have changed, but when I was a kid, they built a Burger King right by the shopette that was by the base pool. The barracks overlooked the pool, and guys would hang out on the top floor, and watch all the teenage girls at the pool. :) If it's still there, I grew up on Roaming Rd. ( 121-4). I was pretty close to North Plains Elem., and the Jr. High. Great videos, I'm glad I found your channel!:)
