This was not a "drum battle" between Eddie and Buddy. This was a "drum love fest."
I helped Ed lug his drums up several flights of stairs when he taught a clinic at
a local college one time. He saw me walking into the building and I asked him
if I could have his autograph and he said, "sure, if you tell me your name and
help me carry these drums up the stairs. I was glad to oblige. Also got Buddy's
autograph when I went back stage as he was climbing off his tour bus.
Memories. Two of the greatest of all time!
Great memories Dennis!
Wow! Talk about a great memory. Gotta admit, I'm a little bit jealous. 😉
It's great to see Ed get his due. He was a great player, teacher and a tell nice guy
Johnny Carson was always a frustrated drummer and LOVED drummers. This is something you would never see on late night TV these days. Today they play Beer Pong.
So good! Yes I did know he was a drummer. And a magician I think!?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Yes, a magician! He started out as "The Great Carsini", I believe.
@@torydz I love it. Sounds like he would have been a hit at parties. Real Renaissance man.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums True, magicians don't seems to be as popular or revered as they once were.
The closest I ever got to playing the drums was sitting on the floor where my mom gave me four tin pots and two wooden spoons to use as sticks :/
That was live to tape. The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson taped at 5:30PM in Burbank, California for broadcast later that night. Every single musician who was part of The Tonight Show Band was/is a beast, period.
Totally Larry! No second take... don't mess up!
People didn't realize what a privilege it was getting to hear Ed play every night. He was such a talented player and from everything I've read, a super nice guy, to boot.
I saw this live when they did it. I was 14. I soon had a second drum idol with Ed. He absolutely sounded great. Buddy's popcorn tight snare drum was too much! Years later I gave Ed a ride in my car out to dinner after a clinic he did at the place I work. Cool guy.
We get out of the car and he grabs my arm. It was icy in the parking lot. "Let me hold on to you. I lost my ice chops when I moved from New York to LA." I still have my ice chops. Dinner was great with about 4 of us drummers and Ed. We bought for him. Legend.
GREAT STORY!
Ed said this was the highlight of his career.
Watched tonight show every night decades. Never saw Ed live but saw Buddy in 77, 81 and 86
Ed Shaughnessy was a World Class Musician, not just a drummer. He played 5 nights a week for 30 years on The Tonight Show and everyday he had to get in and read charts for different performers (not everyone brought their own band) that came on the Tonight Show that night. He did this with every artist in every genre you can think of: Blues, Jazz, Pop, Rhythm & Blues, Country, Rock, Funk, Nostalgia and Contemporary entertainers. There are certainly many drummers who can play so many styles today, but I think a 30 year track record speaks volumes for Ed's musicianship.
I totally agree. I've watched lots of drum battles with Buddy and Ed really stayed with him. As far as the whole band goes, the Tonight Band was incredible. Doc, Snookie Young, Tommy Newsome.... so many fantastic musicians. I remember one night when Chuck Berry was the guest and it went so well they did the full hour with him. He ends up playing another song with the band that they didn't rehearse. He just tells the band the key and away they went. Amazing!
The two legendary drummers aside, Doc's band is sizzling!
100%
Ed Shaughnessy was my teacher in NYC,I learned a LOT from this guy...We became very good friends.
I probably saw this live, as I watched Carson every night back then and always when I knew buddy was going to be a guest, as I am a drummer also, I was 18 then......where did the decades go?
They were both superb, and epic is not an over statement. Theres also a video of Buddy vs. Animal from the muppets having a drum battle, classic retro TV fun.
Superb TV. Heart warming in a way
If I had been in that audience that night, I would have been going insane! Watching those two really burn it up and cook live in the studio would have been a spiritual experience for me. If there's a jazz club in Heaven, they're selling it out all the time.
Had you been in the audience, you could have gone to one or more jazz clubs near the NBC studios and heard many of The Tonight Show band members gigging after the show finished taping at 7:00PM. Zep's Music in Burbank was a hang out for the horn players.
Jesus these guys are not human! 2 of the greatest ever to pick up sticks.
Crazy isn’t it William! 🥁💯🙌
Hey I agree this was absolutely outstanding. Another great drummer was Louie Bellson not only was he a great drummer, but a really great nice guy. I met him a couple of times. Very sweet guy, who also passed. R.I.P. God bless.
I use Bellson's book. It's superb!
the tonight show had a long stretch with eddie on drums, doc severinson trumpet and tommy newsome sax (mostly lead alto with occasional tenor) doc is 93 now, and was still active playing before the pandemic. how many 92 year old trumpet players you know hitting double c's? thats an all-star group. no surprise that eddie is awesome.
Those were the days. WOW!
TV back in the day: 60s and 70s, was full of great musical variety shows. Every big male and female vocalist hosted their own variety shows and/or specials. So, as a kid, even though you wouldn't be caught dead listening to anything but rock and roll on your transistor radio, at home you watched all the variety shows with big band, jazz, country, folk and some classical performers. It was a great introduction to all kinds of music. There were only 3 channels and you had to watch something, and you watched these variety shows. Also, the talk shows were of a very high caliber, with all sorts of music performances. Unfortunately, today's TV is very contrived and is very rote and unimaginative, and the level of talent is in the basement.
Both Buddy and Louis Bellson have said Ed takes no back seat to anyone! They all were friend's as well.
He's awesome Anthony!
Andrew...I studied with Ed Shaughnessy and became good friends with him....He was a monster drummer...The only guy that could intimidate him was Buddy.Check out some of Ed's college shows....I actually had the gift of doing a drum battle with Louie Bellson...A great time in my life.
Epic was the word I’ve used for this, as well!
Old school cool is another phrase....the show, this segment...the whole thing!
The Tonight Show band always had fantastic musicians......headed by Doc Severinsen you would expect that....and Ed was no exception!
Enjoyed your take on this!
Just so you know Andrew, Johnny Carson played the drums competently and was immensely respectful of the musicians in the band. Buddy Rich was on the show many times, so there's quite a bit of footage for you to mine.
These guys are why I grew up looking at drummers right up there with lead guitarists. Still do.
Hey as great as Buddy Rich was Ed Shaughnessy had the chops too and could go toe to toe with anyone
Yes 2 monsters!
I watched the Tonight Show every time Buddy Rich was on, here is a jewel about this particular drum battle. If you noticed Ed Shaughnessy's kit had "one" bass drum for this battle, he played a standard Louis Bellson Double Bass kit. On a previous show, Buddy Rich, being arrogant bragged to Shaughnessy he can do with One Bass drum what he could do with Two. I have seen Buddy Rich up close and personal do a single stroke roll with his right foot.
In this battle, you didn't see or hear Buddy Rich do his signature roll on his bass drum, he respected Ed Shaughnessy and didn't want to show off, while embarrassing Ed. In my opinion, the drummer closest to Buddy Rich's skill level is Billy Cobham. I hope you've had a chance to see The Mahavishnu Orchestra or Cobham's groups with the Brecker Brothers, George Duke or Stanley Clarke. How's the weather Down Under this time of year, it's 25 March 2021, I'm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania U.S.A. it is an unusually warm 70 degrees Farenheit.
2:49 "Take that, Buddy!"
Buddy: Channels God to play a segment that will never be equaled
Props to Ed for keeping up! He knew he wasn't as good as Buddy, but he gave 100% anyway.
Growing up Buddy would come on the Tonight Show with some regularity. Johnny Carson was a bit of a drummer himself so had a real fondness for drummers. When Buddy and Ed would have one of these battles it was TV at its best, and better pay attention because there was no recording, no playback. You got to hear it once so you really learned how to tune in.
Eddie may have had Buddy's number in this one.
Duuuuude think so man
Nobody better than Buddy Rich
Eddie falls out of time throughout his solos trying to match Buddy’s speed and complexity - which he can’t.
Ed's son has a youtube channel: John shaughnessy
Buddy Rich World's greatest drummer...period!
Legend!
Fantastic!
Glad you like it!
Not a beast, not a monster, Buddy Rich was the inspiration for Animal.
Buddy Rich stands alone at the top!!!
They played similar parts, like it was the drum chart !? Amazing skill and precision !
Yes Bill!
I read that Buddy told Ed-- "Don't use both bass drums, and none of that ticky-tocky 25/4 Indian stuff, I don't understand it."
In return Ed said "Ok...please don't do that crossover stuff."
So Ed doesn't use two bass drums or play Indian rhythms.
Buddy does cross- overs anyway.
HAHA Scott! LOVE IT
this was on free TV
Very different times Mike!
I watched this! It was my 16th birthday!!! LoL!!!
Excellent!
Both great! Bought this great book by Burt Korall called, 'Drummin men - The Heartbeat of Jazz - The Swing Years'. Highly recommended.
I believe that buddy coach Ed Shaughnessy! but Ed was a great drummer for the Johnny Carson show for years!
Both great drummers!
Remember seeing this when it aired. Buddy was being his normal abrasive self when Carson asked him what he thought makes a good band? Without hesitation BR pointed to the Tonight Show Band and said, "THAT'S a band."
EDIT: I'm a Yank ex-pat living near Wellie. Porirua to be exact. Check out a band called Ovis playing their song Archaic here a YT. I'll find the link and post it. They're wrapping up their first CD.
ua-cam.com/video/YIULaIjNmOw/v-deo.html
My partner's son is one of the guitar players.
WOAH! Yeah Buddy didn't play around!
Can't wait to hear Ovis!
Thanks for these videos; I saw Buddy live in 1980 but Ed here gives him a good run for his money
He sure does Mark!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Buddy came to London in 1980 which was early on in my own drumming career; my first drum teacher took me to see him at Ronnie Scott’s Club with his band, all younger players and sounding incredible and just blew my mind. Later I started listening to the drum battles between him and Gene Krupa for JATP in the early ‘50s then Louie Bellson came on the scene and he would be possibly the only other drummer to come close to Buddy and Ed Shaughnessy who was the drummer on Johnny Carson Tonight Show. Great era of drumming
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Ed was a true gentleman also, sadly passing a few years back
That's the closest I've seen of anyone getting close to Buddy.
It's great isn't it! 2 Titans!
The word Overrated comes to mind
you never say - "take that, Buddy" --- hehe. He will destroy everyone! Ed was one of the few in my view that could hang with Buddy at this point.
He's right there with him!
Buddy got a run for his money there. He was probably glad someone could actually put a decent challenge up. It made a change I bet.
Agree Mark. Ed is a monster
Gods among mere mortals.
How or where would you even begin to break down that solo
wow!
Love your channel......(That's what she said)
Oh no...
Don't know if you heard it but try listening to Buddy Rich The Impossible drum solo
Need to get to that one!
Wow
Yes Joyce!
I saw an interview with Buddy where he said traditional grip is the only way (paraphrasing). Any thoughts on grip?
I started out trad, went matched, then started playing matched and open-armed (able to ride with either hand), then went both trad and matched. Playing this kind of music just seems to call for trad. I do not attempt to reverse my trad.
A grain of salt:
Buddy would diss matched grip, but usually in terms of how clumsy, ham-handed Rock drummers often used it at the time, and this criticism was usually well-deserved (Rock drummers are vastly improved since then).
Bear in mind that Buddy did in fact use matched grip whenever he damn well pleased, and he used it as it should be used - fluidly and musically, not as an excuse to club the instrument stiffly like an ape.
every drummer must watch this at some point ...your education is not complete until you do.
Agree
Skewing an aside: Have you seen the movie WHIPLASH? I never really gave much thought about the drums until that movie. I was fascinated by the plot of a Jazz wannabee (drummer) student
and his sadistic professor. Any comments as to that movie? Just curious. Thanks.
That movie sucked. Period.
@@vova47 That movie is a masterpiece, PERIOD...
but, if you want a realistic portrait of jazz musicians better watch a documentary... if you want to watch a great dramatic movie, watch it
@@JulioLeonFandinho Yep, pretty phenomenal film.
Ed won that one. Hands down
Remember - Ed's a pro - he's going to let the guest star 'win'!
Alan Shearer is a drum teacher as well as a Football Pundit. Ok.
HAHA Mark!
Louie Bellson told Johnny Ed doesn't need to take a backseat to anyone. He wasn't wrong
Why did buddy hold back? 😜
I studied with Joe Morello, and he would sometimes refer to this. He would say, “Ed is a very nice man, but these were not serious competitions. Ed was WAY out of his league trying to go head to head with Buddy.” Joe himself considered Buddy light years beyond himself, and in my opinion the only drummer of that era who could seriously go head to head with Buddy was Louie Bellson. But Buddy was more interesting to listen to as a soloist,
Buddy Rich was such an egotistical prick though. Obviously talented, but I would be lying if I said it didn't effect my opinion of him.
Not that there are not great drummers out there any more. It seems nowadays most music is produced in studio with programmed synths. Live bands are not as big a sell as what Lady GaGa Taylor Swift Bruno Mars ... well you get the drift. Buddy Rich was a household name in at least half of America and across generations.... we’ve lost a lot to the machine corporate mentality...
maybe you can make it a little bit smaller, i think i can still see them
HAHA
They don’t make shit like this no more
Eddie was superb but he is going up against the G.O.A.T Buddy Rich. No one. No one was in the same league as Buddy Rich.
Does anyone know the name of the song they are playing?
Legs and Thighs, I think.
Not sure Timothy!
Ed was a beast...Not that Buddy wasn't one too...:)_,Two masters...
Yes. Battle of the titans!
Johnny took drum lessons from Ed .
Nice!
Ed's definitely faster, but Buddy is better technically.
Simple, If i had a band, I would choose Buddy over Ed, that would be an easy decision. No disrespect to Ed.
ua-cam.com/video/z3fZR0srOAo/v-deo.html
Fair enough Bill!
Ed was a great drummer and it was nice showpiece but when it comes to soloing nobody compares to Buddy Rich IMO.
Dave Grohl is a average drummer at best, even mentioning him during this is a insult lol
Zactley 👍
He sure does have a lot of platinum record awards for an "average" drummer
@@TheZappawizard means nothing so does milli vanilli
based on Dwayne Jones logic Ringo Starr might be the best drummer ever then
@@alanbaum6690 he's definitely one of the most influential
