    This solo is not just excellent, it's more like a miracle. There are so many beautiful ideas perfectly executed and with an amazing interconnection... it really deserves to be studied closely. It's even better than people think it is. It is miraculous.

    I saw Buddy live in London in 1980 and that was a profound impact on my own drumming. This man had speed, artistry and technique and musicianship I’ve never seen equalled. Subscribed to your channel.

    The chart that the Buddy Rich Band plays in this video is their arrangement of songs from West Side Story. I recommend that you look up other live performances of this tune because this video does NOT have the impossible section. That's when Buddy plays a blisteringly fast single stroke roll starting at ffff and then quieting down to pppp losing absolutely none of the speed or intensity. From there he moves to the snare's rim, get loud and soft again before signaling the band back in. It's truly amazing.

      I did not know that was what they wrote for West Side Story! Definately an interesting factoid, thanks for letting me know!

    I used to set up Buddy Rich’s gigs in the 60’s, he’s a great cat! Easy to work for, he is very much missed! Mr. Old Blue eyes Sinatra were both with the same agency.

      And you can tell he was suffering a heart attack; he was breathing heavily even before he started playing in earnest, and his pained expressions in the middle of the solo clearly reflect that he was struggling even as he was playing perfectly. I saw (and met) him shortly before he died in '87. RIP Buddy!

    I am in my mid 50's and picked up the bass guitar 7 months ago with no experience, save a tiny bit of skill in playing a lick or two on the banjo. I am loving it. My bass instructor suggested I take up drums too to help my bass playing, timing, etc. Well, who doesn't think the drums are cool??? At any rate, I have a practice pad and stand on the way. All this said, this was a great video. I have watched this many times, but to have Nikilai, as a young man and accomplished drummer, give such sound commentary on Buddy's playing...it made for such a great and, shall I say, reverent, video. Thanks Nikolai! New subber here!

    Whatching a reaction video in its entirety is great for the viewer and very much appreciated. It's very rare for a UA-camr to do that. However, constantly talking over the footage non-stop ruins what could've been an awesome experience for me. It's your channel and you can react to the content however you want, but I personally cannot sit through a great performance like this and listen to the UA-camr continually talk over it. I apologize for being so harsh. You seem like a very dedicated drummer. I wish you a lot of luck with your channel. Thanks!

    yes buddy had a heart attack and yes Buddy didn't practice and said rudiments were nonsense yet played all the rudiments. I worked with Don Menza and Art Pepper 2 of the best sax soloists of all time studied with Freddy Gruber who taught Neal Peart that I heard from these guys that Buddy had a photographic memory they would bring in a drummer to read and play a 20 min complex chart while Buddy would sit watching it 1 time and get on the drums and play the chart perfectly NOONE HAS EVER DONE THIS ACCEPT MAYBE MOZART ON OTHER INSTRUMENTS BUDDY IS THE GOAT ON THE DRUMS AND MAYBE AS AN OVERALL MUSICIAN ALL THE GREATS HAVE PRACTICED AND HAD TO READ MUSIC TO PLAY SONGS NOT BUDDY RICH HE JUST LISTENED ONCE AND COULD REPEAT IT LIKE A ROBOT OR COMPUTER

    Actually, that high hat solo that technique goes back to the 30s and 40s Gene Krupa used to do it look at some old videos once in a while of the great drummers and you’ll see them doing this hi hat work with a left-hand underneath the bottom cym.

  • @nealsausen4651
    @nealsausen4651 Місяць тому +1

    That hat thing he does is a well-known technique get the gene Krupa book go to the section on the hi hat work and you’ll see tons of exercises using this technique also also by the way we could do without the commentary it really ruins the track can’t you leave the commentary for after the video is over?!
