  • In Social Injustice in Scottish History: British army massacre at Tranent Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey tells one of the horror Tales from Scotlands History, where a civil dispute turned into a British army massacre. The Militia Act 1797 led to civil strife then a massacre by British troops.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

@@raajeweler6569 In the Highlands (Hielands) they spoke Scots Gaelic which was a dialect of Irish Gaelic (OK, Sorry! Let's not fight when we have the Sassenachs to deal with!) Until the 17th century the literary language was the same; later the "demotic" speech went in slightly different directions. But in the 18th century, both versions of Gaelic were referred to (sometimes) as "Erse". And YES: the "Scotii" were an Irish tribe that colonised south western Pictland (Dál Riada) back in the 5th century CE. So "really" all they Sco's are just geographically misplaced Ahrish!!!!

It was never mentioned to us all the way through school, indeed it was only when the sculpture was unveiled in the Civic Square that got me looking for further info. I did have a book many years ago which was both sad and informative, and really opened my eyes to the whole sad tale. Thanks for your video, more power to your elbow sir !!!

I grew up in Paisley. The Paisley Canal disaster was never mentioned in school. I was aware of the Glen Cinema disaster but only through the living memory of my parents. And there are others. The point I'm making is that there's more history to teach than hours in the day and with limited time, you can only teach so much in the hope that the children will get interested enough to find out more for themselves about their local and national history.

This was expertly crafted. You're a natural story teller. I really enjoyed the way you weaved everything together, even honoring those who fell, by telling their stories. Saving that vital detail for the end was paramount to painting the picture of this great social injustice - They're all rich men's wars, aren't they? ...and the working class is always caught up in it 💔.

I think I know very much of the Glencoe massacre story and had the very uncomfortable feeling when I camped near one of the settelments on the anniversary. the massacre was not compacted to one area as the can were dispersed along the glen. Most killed by troops were on the clan chief area which is currently invercoe campsite. The clan graves are on the island just along the loch. sorry Bruce , I have a few whiskys in me so names so names and timelines are confussed at the moment. I got to this after watching a few glen coe massacre videos including yours which well sent me to look at your Tarent massacre vid. As a Scot I was surprised this was not well known I never heard of Tarent.Thank you Bruce. I grew up in a poor fishing and logging town. After high school, boys had a couple of options to earn a living. Become a fisherman and work on the North Pacific Ocean, work in the woods as a logger or join the military. College was an option for very few. In my graduation class of less than 100, and half were male, about 12 joined the military. Fortunately, there were no active wars at the time, so they all survived their enlistment.
The poor and working classes have always carried the burden of military duties, which may explain why so many wealthy people think wars are the solution to world problems, instead of diplomacy.

Not much really has changed over the century’s as an Ulster man my kin are intertwined with Scotland, and even though I’ve served the crown in the army, we are all just pawns in the Englishman eyes to be used and abused at their will, and still here now in this day and age in my country we are still being used and forgotten about, I wonder why I served at times but it was for the man standing next to me. Governments all over the world do as they want once they become voted in, far too much power given to them to make laws and legislation to suit themselves and their pockets and yet without us the common man they cannot be voted in. I’m glad to have come across this UA-cam channel as I have such a love for our shared history, and a sadness to how we have and are dictated to still in this modern day.

That’s a very silly comment. Since you Northern Irelanders are mainly descendant from English and Scotch settlers. So you are an Englishman yourself, to a large extent. Also, a heck of a lot of english soldiers died defending Ulster from the IRA during the troubles. Defusing bombs etc. You’d do well to remember that.
This text above arrived in my inbox today, I do find the person who wrote it an idiot.
First off I’m not an English man nor I’m i descended from English, I am however am descendant from Scotland and I’ve traced my family tree back quite a few generations.
He also states English soldiers died here in my home land Northern Ireland , and I’d do well to remember this. This is true and a lot of my own kin died as well, ( in service to the crown) I also lost comrades while in (service to the crown) ie i severed the crown as well. I don’t think he understood anything I was trying to say previously. Simply to say he must be a sassanach , I wonder has he ever put his life on the line for his country.

Love from the US. Just subscribed. I’m not from Scotland but my family fled to the US from Scotland in the late 1700’s. They were from the highlands I’ve been told. Hearing this story just saddens me. I love your videos and am so interested about learning the history of where we came from. I have a Scottish flag in my man cave but I never really thought about what it truly meant until I found your channel. Thank you for all you do to school us, especially those of us outside Scotland on our history. I’ve always had a disdain for the English as an American (not the 20th century English) and now this shows where that may have originated from. Again, thank you.

you said you had disdain for England. Well without England the US would not have come into being. Even today US system of law is based on English Common Law and Magna Carta. If we had lost Canada and our colonies in America to France migration from England, Scotland and Ireland would never have happened.

@@gray3553 I have no problem with modern day England. In fact I love England and it’s people. I’ve always had a problem with how England treated people prior to the 1900’s (maybe earlier as I’m not a historian). I don’t care what could have happened, or what might have happened, all I know is what is history. I speak English. Period. My ancestors fled Scotland because of the English. Maybe I should have said a disdain for the English of that time period. The video was about then, not now.

"Read the Riot Act" refers to the statement in the Riot Act 1715 (1 Geo. 1. St. 2 c. 5) which told people "to disperse themselves and to peaceably depart to their habitations" upon the "pains contained in this Act". It was repealed in 1973 in the UK, and 1987 here in New Zealand (where it was last used [to no effect] at the Queen Street Riots in 1984).
