  • Ruby Keeler, still recovering from a recent stroke, made this TV comeback on the 1980 award show "Your Choice For the Oscars," introduced by Lee Remick. Dabney Coleman rather awkwardly accepts an award on behalf of Dolly Parton.

I cant believe they rushed her like that at least she had the balls to turn up and do it and good on her she remembered the words to the songs perfectly and you could see her brain going round and remembering each one as if it was yesterday

What a jerk that guy was to a legend like Ruby Keeler. Total nobody.

I watched that show live and I've had a hard time ever seeing Dabney again. She is still remembered and he is...who?

Ruby wasn't even that elderly here. Only about 70. But, five or so years earlier had a brain aneurysm/stroke. She had been in a coma for a while then courageously worked hard to walk again. Used a cane for rest of her life. She was a sweetheart, too. Mr. Coleman is a terrible person.

It's too bad that most of us would have to wait until we are old, lost our beauty and walking with a cane until people give us a standing ovation. Since Ruby was no longer a threat to other actors she got a standing ovation.

JACK ANTHONY She got the standing ovation because she deserved it. Because she was a great dancer & very beloved for her graciousness & contribution to the Movies . The audience was expressing SENTIMENTALITY & LOVE for a Grande Lady.

That Dabney Coleman. And here, all these years, I thought Jerry Lewis was the biggest asshole Hollywood every produced.

I remember that moment very well and have hated Coleman ever since. I could be wrong but it seems he was making a joke about Ruby's physical condition as she struggled to walk off the stage, aided by longtime Hollywood writer Army Archerd. "Great little dancer." What a schmuck. Glad he's vanished from the limelight.

+Danny Proctor Yes, he was making a bad joke and I never forgot it either. At least Ruby had softened it a little earlier by saying "I haven't done too much dancing of late".

I'm not sure Coleman meant to be mean, but it came off smirky. He was a very good actor in several roles during the '80s. "9 to 5," "WarGames," "Cloak & Dagger," "Tootsie." He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for "Buffalo Bill" in 1987. More recently he was in the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" and Warren Beatty's film "Rules Don't Apply" (2016).

Jack Anthony, she got one hell of a standing ovation in the 72 Tony Awards for "I Want To Be Happy," after dancing like a 23 year old.

Actually, the clip from that show is uploaded here and -- shockingly -- there is NO standing ovation.

"9 to 5" did not win the Oscar that year. The Best Song Oscar was won by "Fame". Odd.
