It's the best depiction of greed ever displayed on the big screen. Do me a favor and just watch the opening credits of Raging Bull...you can thank me later. Enjoy! By the way, Ordinary People is one of the worst wins of all time. Not only was Raging Bull more well directed, written, acted, shot, edited and more well received by critics than Ordinary People but, David Lynch's The Elephant Man runs circles around Ordinary People. The academy has regretted snubs like Raging Bull and Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan.
That's your opinion, thank you for sharing but it you be much better if you would not share it as fact. I want to watch Raging Bull eventually, and I don't doubt it's a amazing movie or that it deserved the award. My complain is that people hold a stupid grudge against Ordinary People because it won, never getting tired of insulting it every time they see a mention of it. Acting as if it's a horrible movie and there's no way it could have won. Too bad for you (and the people who are still bitter about it even after 30 years) OP won, it's beautifully acted and directed, and for me and many other people a very personal movie. Timothy Hutton plays the part beautifully(not angsty or unlikable like most depressed teens in movies), and so does the rest of the cast. I was not alive back then, but from what I've read this type of family drama was not that common, so it definitely holds value beside the movie itself.
It's not just my opinion. As I claimed, even the American Film Institute has pointed it out. Don't start with the always cliche and very naive "that's your opinion" bullshit. I'm bitter about the win because, not only was Raging Bull better but, the Elephant Man was much better as well. And your argument is so stupid, no bad movie even gets nominated for best picture. It's just sad when the true winners and better movies lose for political reasons.

WOW! :D Thank You so much Academy Channel! I requested for this video yesterday and now is here! I saw ''Ordinary People'' with my mother and I loved every second of the movie. Robert Redford made a great movie but I think Martin Scorsese deserved Best Director for his achievement in ''Raging Bull''. Anyway, the performances of Mary Tyler Moore, Timothy Hutton, Judd Hirsch and Donald Sutherland are also great!
Raging Bull is perhaps the most overrated film of the 80s. It's not even top 5 Scorcese let alone best of the 80s. Great performance by De Niro, great cinematography, direction and editing but the script was lackluster and the movie was competing with 2 other biopics - which were both in my opinion superior.
Too much Raging Bull lip service in these comments. A movie about a vicious, violent, wife beating boxer. But because its shot in grainy black and white, and is a little edgy, too many people think it deserved this award. Ordinary People was the right choice.
Because Ordinary People beat Raging Bull and The Elephant Man, it is often rated among the likes of The Greatest Show on Earth, Driving Miss Daisy and Shakespeare in Love, the times the Academy really dropped the ball. But that's not fear. It's a great. A masterpeace by alle accounts. Was it the best film of the year? I can see why someone would say that. It's not one of those cases: 'What were you thinking?" It's a perfectly worthy choice, and perhaps that's the best you can hope for.
Folks. We live in a world where Troll 2...The Room...Garbage Pail Kids...and Howard the Duck make it on Blu Ray before movies like this, Punch Drunk Love and the first two Before films do...WTF.
Ordinary people was a truly deserving winner of best picture, excellent direction, screenplay and above all superb acting . Mary tyler moore was robbed of the oscar Donald sutherland who i am not normally a fan of certainly deserved to be nominated and Timothy Hutton gave one of the screens greatest performances absolutely stunning
Lynn Turman I want to make sure I understand your comment correctly. So are you saying that films for kids are only for kids and that they are not for adults? There are plenty of animated films that have plenty of beauty and emotion usually more than the ones actually made for Adults! Let me give a few examples this list is also to prove that Animation is Art and studios such as Illumination, Blue Sky, and a couple of others are just garbage: Fantasia Beauty and the Beast (1991) Wall-E Kubo and the Two Strings Kung Fu Panda 2 Up! The Lego Batman Movie The Prince of Egypt Chicken Run Coraline Shaun the Sheep Movie The Peanuts Movie Toy Story Spirited Away Howl’s Moving Castle The Iron Giant The Secret of NIMH along with many others!!’
Most of who? To be perfectly honest, I saw "Raging Bull" once and it was very good, but I have no desire to see it again. Robert De Niro was absolutely magnificent in the lead role, of course, but the movie itself was otherwise a conventional biopic that was stomach-churning in its graphic violence. Martin Scorsese has made much better films than that one, such as "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," "Casino" and "The Departed."
I'm watching and re-experiencing a Donald Sutherland marathon this week in honor of the late great actor we recently lost, and will always remember his superb work as an artist and fine human being.

Adorable Lillian Gish was about to say: Ordinary pic... and corrected to PEOPLE :D
There were a lot of amazing classic movies in 1977
Wow, Lilian Gish. This clip is History.
They should have someone like her present Best Picture this year!
Also a great novel by Judith Guest.
Wow. To think she's 88 right here
Ordinary People was way better than Raging Bull, and if any other film could have won it would have been The Elephant Man, which was hauntingly superb
What, no overblown acceptance speech with scores of people involved in the picture? Gosh! If this was made today there would be Ordinary People II, Extraordinary People, etc.
Back when the Oscars had class, unlike the Oscars of this century
Why do people keep saying that? It just highlights the ignorance of the history of the Oscars
@@GG1Productions people keep saying that because the oscars nowadays is trying to attract "the young generation" by putting on some hilariously cringey and un-needed acts, along with the presenters trying to be funny but horribly fail.
@@GG1Productions Because it's THE TRUTH!
Oscars of the century only cared about black people
I wonder why nobody bring up "Birth of a Nation" with such pride at todays Oscars. I would love them bring up how "Birth of a Nation" thrilled audiences while giving the award to "12 Year a Slave". Oh What Sweet Irony.
LOL Right? I guess they just meant that technically it was a huge innovation. But that's about the only reason.
I still say Blakkklansman is the best film of 18 and is being robbed.
As was Get Out. Not even going to mention the flub up from the year prior...
@@radcolortiedye6718 yeah brother!
4:30 That's that big shot producer from the Russian Tea Room scene in Tootsie. "Well, thank you, Miss Michaels".
Ohmigosh! You are right!!!
Una Película Extraordinaria y es parte de la vida real...es muy fuerte su guión y la Dirección Actuaciones geniales.
Very beautiful film!!!! Congratulation Robert Redford!!!!
One of the greatest films of all time
I'm glad Ordinary PEOPLE won!
Five GREAT movies. I think I'll schedule a marathon. Super presenting job by Ms. Gish (we're not worthy)!
Raging Bull might be the best movie of the 80s. Sometimes it takes a few years for a film to be fully appreciated
Only for Scorcese cultists.
Nah. I can understand people liking it more than Ordinary People, but best movie of the 80s?? Hell nah
I will watch this Movie as Soon as Possible.
Too much Raging Bull lip service in these comments. A movie about a vicious, violent, wife beating boxer. But because its shot in grainy black and white, and is a little edgy, too many people think it deserved this award. Ordinary People was the right choice.
I love how they leave Lillian Gish behind them in the dark.
Extraordinary movie ever
I'm curious from when it did started the whole cast and crew going on stage after winning Best Picture
Folks. We live in a world where Troll 2...The Room...Garbage Pail Kids...and Howard the Duck make it on Blu Ray before movies like this, Punch Drunk Love and the first two Before films do...WTF.
Criterion released Punch Drunk Love and the Before movies on Blu
RIP Ronald L. Schwary
Lilian is a gem
Ordinary people was a truly deserving winner of best picture, excellent direction, screenplay and above all superb acting . Mary tyler moore was robbed of the oscar Donald sutherland who i am not normally a fan of certainly deserved to be nominated and Timothy Hutton gave one of the screens greatest performances absolutely stunning
Now the audience stands up for peanut vendors….
Wonderful picture!
They just left Gish behind!
Its nice to see Oscar winners are at the stage... at the end of the ceremony... they should do that again
Ah, the good old days. When Hollywood occasionally made movies FOR ADULTS!!
Lynn Turman I want to make sure I understand your comment correctly. So are you saying that films for kids are only for kids and that they are not for adults? There are plenty of animated films that have plenty of beauty and emotion usually more than the ones actually made for Adults! Let me give a few examples this list is also to prove that Animation is Art and studios such as Illumination, Blue Sky, and a couple of others are just garbage:
Fantasia
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Wall-E
Kubo and the Two Strings
Kung Fu Panda 2
Up!
The Lego Batman Movie
The Prince of Egypt
Chicken Run
Coraline
Shaun the Sheep Movie
The Peanuts Movie
Toy Story
Spirited Away
Howl’s Moving Castle
The Iron Giant
The Secret of NIMH
along with many others!!’
films for EVERYONE.
i don't get your comment
Disagree. Ordinary people was an amazing movie and deserved to win!! The acting was incredible.
This is in response to Charles
Most consider Raging Bull the best movie of the entire 80s.
Ordinary People has great producing.
jwelch5742 can you fuck off? you comment this plain remark on every Oscar video. “great producing” what the hell does that even signify?
@@natsumehyuuga08 Why can all people be gentlemen and positive like me because I'm better than you.
How did this win over: Raging Bull, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Kagemusha
And the Shining
1 million subscribers with no videos How did I forget my favorite horror movie?🤦
🤷♂️
Still packs a punch - but the two best things went un-nominated - Donald Sutherlands brilliant performance and the film editing by Jeff Kanew.
Back when the Oscars meant something and were run by consummate pros!
Not some SJW bs
Lillian Gish would not have been invited to the Oscars, let alone presented, in this day and age.
Why?
@@brigittemosaquites9031 She was the main actress in The Birth of a Nation. That film glorified the Ku Klux Klan.
Lilian Gish... now that's a legend!
A brilliant movie - but what a crop of movies there was that year - MTM was brilliant in it - exquisite direction
Robert Redford lindo charmoso e talentoso
