The Saints (Brisbane) & Radio Birdman (Sydney) appeared around the same time, 1973-74 some 900 klm's apart. They play great fast rock'n'roll. Neither band regard themselves as 'punk' but were the first bands in our country who were the trail blazers of DIY. Had to book their own concert venues and pressed their first singles and EP's themselves. Both their first three albums are a must - The Saints - (I'm) Stranded '77; Eternally Yours '78 and Prehistoric Sounds '78. Radio Birdman - Radios Appear (dark cover) '77; Radios Appear (white cover, Overseas Version) '78 and Living Eyes (recorded in 1978 in Wales but not released until 1981 after the band had already broken up). Chris Bailey, the lead singer from The Saints was once asked 'what was the best thing about going to Sydney (back in the day ie 1977), his answer ''meeting Radio Birdman''. The two bands shared a concert together at the Paddington Town Hall on the 3 April 1977. There is live footage of this on youtube.
Love both bands. Their stories are fantastic and similar. All their music is GREAT. ALL. Both go off.
Check out Birdman's lead guitarist and main song writer Deniz Tek who is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He came out to complete his medical studies in the early 1970's. His story alone is of a genius who thankfully shared that genius with the world. He's a trauma specialist, fronts one of the greatest bands ever, did his military service as a flight surgeon in the US Navy (he's a joint citizen), flew F-4 Phantom's and his callsign was ''Iceman''. Rumour is that that character in the movie Top Gun is based a little on Deniz. Check out the song ''Aloha Steve & Dano'' (the song and part of the riff are from the TV show Hawaii 5-0).Pip Hoyle, the keyboardist, went through med school with Deniz. They both still practice in Australia.
Both these bands spawned great spin-off bands including the Laughing Clowns, The New Christs, Ed Kuepper's solo stuff including his band The Aints. Both bands are in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.

Ok, my favourite band are The Clash. Close thing though.

Talented bunch of blokes, keyboard player and lead guitarists are both doctors, bass player became a disney animator, lead guitarist doctor also became a fighter pilot, and his call sign was "iceman" (aussie band, but he is a yank) other guitarist is a Canadian, drummer ex navy musician.

I seem to remember Deniz mentioning, in front of me, that he wrote this about a dream he had about being engulfed by a wave. Such a great song.

Yeah mate, I grew up in that era, the era of great pup bands. Birdman were one of my favorite bands. They never took off overseas and buggered if I know why not. Any way thanks for bringing back my youth.

Hey Rollen, thanks mate for playing this one, great reaction. Your not far off with the surf punk. I’m not sure about the actual surfing relationship, however they were from Sydney which is a real beach city. They were made up of 3 Aussies, an American and a Canadian. They were certainly a big influence in the Australian punk revolution. They could be described as garage punk as well. Maybe someone out there knows. Thanks again

Surf Punk is correct. Another of their songs is Aloha Steve & Danno - which is referencing Hawaii 5-0. I also enjoy some of their slower songs like Love Kills. If you are also interested in Australian Punk, I would check out "I'm Stranded" by The Saints, who were the first punk band outside the US to release a record (even before The Clash or Sex Pistols)
